"We need answers on this. Not defensive BS. Real answers."
In email exchanges with subordinates in February and March 2011, Attorney General Eric Holder and the department's second-highest official expressed growing concern that something might have gone wrong in a federal gun-smuggling probe called Operation Fast and Furious.
Two of Holder's emails and one by Deputy Attorney General James Cole were among documents the Justice Department showed Tuesday to Republican and Democratic staffers of the House Oversight and Government Affairs Committee in an effort to ward off a criminal contempt vote against the attorney general.
The full contents of the emails were described to The Associated Press by two people who have seen them. Both people spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak about them publicly.
For the past year and a half, some Republicans have promoted the idea that Holder and other top-level officials at the Justice Department knew federal agents in Operation Fast and Furious had engaged in a risky tactic known as "gun-walking."
Two of Holder's emails and one from Cole appear to show that they hadn't known about gun-walking but were determined to find out whether the allegations were true.

A feint?
If Holder and the DOJ are really in the right on F&F, why don’t they just release the materials that are under subpoena, and prove it?
(I think we all know the answer to my rhetorical question.)
If he got a response, it was probably this: Dont you remember the meeting right here in your office. The one where you said you wanted to kill the second amendment.
Paraphrase of a Harry Calahan comment to the police official accusing him of going over board on an arrest.
A classic CYA email...
Absolute BS. They would have shown these email exchanges on Day One.
Democrats think all Americans are stupid. But you can hardly blame them; look at their supporters.
A more or less live thread on the debate over here.

He wrote that bogus email specifically because he feared stuff like that might get subpoenaed —the email was legal artifice with a purpose.
They’re leaking carefully selected emails.
Whatever is in the rest of the documents must be extremely damning to the Obama regime to go to the lengths they are going to in order to keep it hidden.
“Honest Officer, these are not my drugs! I merely found them, and I was on my way to the police station to turn them in!”
I suspect Issa has a lot of evidence already. He is moving in for the kill.
I’ve worked in an environment where corrupt individuals would write rear-end covering memos just in case their plans went wrong at some later date.
I should have added that plausible deniability is a cruicial thing to the corrupt, and the more clever of them will plant memos and other evidence to give them deniability if things go wrong in the future.
Yeah, and Obama’s LFBC isn’t forged...
So what? Show us the documents and provide full disclosure.
Those are CYA emails, what used to be known as “Memo to file” to record your alleged thoughts and state of mind at the time. Of course people who are habitual liars are just as likely to lie to their typewriter, or email program.
“He wrote that bogus email specifically because he feared stuff like that might get subpoenaed the email was legal artifice with a purpose.”
So, DOJ wrote a letter on February 4, 2011 saying that no guns were walking....and then later that month Holder wrote a couple of emails demanding to know everything about the operation because he was oh-so-concerned to find the truth about this matter that he had never heard of before.....
Then in May, he testified that he had only heard about F & F a few weeks earlier....which is strange considering that he himself had evidently written emails about it three months prior! And even though he was demanding answers in February and March of 2011, his DOJ didn’t bother to withdraw the February 4th letter until December 2011.
Yeah....right! And why wait until now to release these emails? If you had nothing to hide and you were desperately trying to get to the truth of the matter, why not dump all the docs so everyone can see how hard you were working to find answers?
If the emails show what the AP is trying to say they show, why were they not turned over earlier? And why would Holder think that showing Issa’s people emails that supposedly made Holder look good would stop the committee’s contempt vote for not turning over the other 70+ thousand documents?
This line of reasoning looks more like a turd sandwich than a good thing for Holder.
