James Q. Wilson (2008): Do Blacks Treat Jews in the Same Manner in Which Jews Treat Evangelicals?

Posted on 06/28/2012 10:07:31 AM PDT by pinochet

The late conservative sociologist and evangelical Christian, James Q. Wilson, made an interesting observation on the manner in which Blacks, Jews, and Evangelicals relate to one another. Here is his fascinating 2008 article: http://www.city-journal.org/2008/18_1_evangelicals.html

Here is a summary of his article. White Evangelical Christians are the strongest supporters of Israel in America, and their support for Israel comes from their religious beliefs that Israel is a fulfillment of scripture. But most American Jews have never been great fans of evangelicals, despite great efforts on the part of evangelicals to reach out to Jews.

Jews are the one white ethnic group, that has the strongest record of supporting civil rights for blacks. Jews have a strong record of supporting affirmative action for blacks, despite the fact that affirmative action harms Jews. Despite this, ADL studies have shown that blacks have the highest levels of anti-semitism of any group, with the exception of Muslims. Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton have made anti-semitic remarks, but this has not harmed their careers. In fact, the anti-semitism of Sharpton and Jackson has made them national celebrities, and has led to them being celebrated as national figures.

Compare the treatment that Al Sharpton gets, hosting his own show on MSNBC, with the treatment that Pat Buchanan has received. Sharpton is much worse than Buchanan, with regard to anti-semitism. Sharpton helped incite the Crown Heights riots in 1991, which killed a Jewish Student called Yankel Rosenbaum. Then there is a long list of black anti-semites who are loved by blacks, such as Louis Farrakhan, Leonard Jeffries, Amiri Baraka, Andrew Young, Khalid Muhammad, Steve Cokely, Tony Martin, David Dinkins, Malcolm X, Cynthia McKinney, Alton Maddox, etc.

That is acceptable. As I said in my post above, the posters on FR are definitely NOT of the far left. So a stupid statement like in ansell's post with the great in power and influence smacks of the worst kind of insult to a Freerepublic jewish member

Why don’t you start your own thread — your post was the first to bring up Catholics on this thread which is about Evangelicals and Jews.

your impulse to bring Catholicism into this discussion (note your post 14 was the first to do so) to personalize political discussions needs to be checked, you should make an effort to end that practice.

Most of us here are conservatives, and a handfull are just tribalists interested in some identity agenda. This thread was a reasonable, useful, even important thread for discussion by conservatives of all stripes, but it seems to have been hijacked in an effort to stop the discussion and analysis of the left.

yes it was hijacked by ansell's post number 14 which out of the blue instead of focusing on the topic of the thread hits Catholics. Why ansell are your posts consistently disrupting every thread?

I just read this piece by the RM and this is exactly what I mean -- ansel's post of Jews in America are of the far left, great in power and influence is the worst kind. Let's be specific and let's not attack our fellow conservative Freepers. I bring the case of blacks because 80 to 90% voted dim, but for any freeper to say "all blacks" is hurtful to our conservative freepers who are black.

It's just like that "are of the far left" is pointing a finger at every jewish member on this board -- who are conservative, whatever may be the % of non-freeper Jews who are not conservative.

"A Jew is all the more a Jew upon acknowledgement of his Messiah. The question for a Jew must be "Is Jesus (Yeshua) the Jewish Messiah?".

Jesus is not our messiah and I can assure you it does not enhance ones Jewishness. It makes them a Christian. Jewishness is not Christianity minus Jesus

Just because you say that Christ is not your Messiah, doesn't make it so. Ask Jews who have turned to Jesus, knowing that He is their true Messiah, and you will find that knowing Him as their Messiah, for them, greatly enhances their Jewishness. Christian gentiles have been added onto Israel, as Ruth was added onto Israel through union with Boaz. Jews, in essence, are not turned into Christians upon recognizing Jesus as their true and rightful Messiah, rather it is Christian gentiles that are added onto Israel when we recognize and accept your Messiah, The King of Israel, for who He is, LORD and God.

Have you read, reread, read again and studied The Torah, prayerfully before The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, asking Him for understanding? Do you really know why you believe what you believe, and are you satisfied that you have deeply, powerfully and prayerfully sought out divine truth? Have you personally had any real and life changing intervention from Almighty God in your life? Do you love Him with all your heart, mind and soul? If you cannot say yes to these questions, than I hope you will not be satisfied until you can. Remember that Jacob wrestled with God until he received a blessing from Him. Don't be satisfied until you have received your own personal blessing from The LORD of heaven and earth!

I dont see a problem in calling a spade a spade

And let me tell you something cronos

I qualify my every utterance about Jews with yes there are conservative ones including a few that matter

Nobody does that when bashing hillbillies and rednecks here do they...not ever

And to pretend that progressive Jews in our culture are eithet nothing to worry about or equaled out by conservative Jewish unicorns or worse yet....lets just not talk about it

Is part of the cultural paralysis that white Christians now suffer from that has caused them to surrender with nary a metaphorical shot fired

Well not me....i don't know exactly when it started or why but refusing to talk about ain't gonna make it go away

Levin and Savage sure don't hold back....why should we?

I actually had a mammy when I was a little boy, Does that not tell you something. My mother’s family was from Mississippi, and my Mother actually played with the Vardeman kids at a time when Jackson was a small town. To Kill a Mockingbird remains one of my favorite movies, not because Hollywood didn’t get a lot of things wrong, but because of the little things. I could almost smell the mixture of sweat and talcum power on the ladies, with their bonnets as they working on their flowers. As I sometimes stayed with “
“Retha” in her place in Ceder Top, I got to see black folks from a child’s eye view: I was even younger than Scout. So I didn’t see all that much nobility. I just saw southern folks with black skins. Never could understand segregation, until I got older and read enough history to know that it was at bottom just tribalism.

” It had turned whites into jailers and blacks into inmates, but both were in jail.”

You watch too many movies. And what’s worse you think they’re true.

"Just because you say that Christ is not your Messiah, doesn't make it so."

Oh, he isnt, there is no doubt. Not just because I say so. Our people have considered the messianic claims for 2000 years and the NT claims still do not meet the requirements of Messiah ben David. No, christianity makes a Jew a meshumad, no longer part of the Jewish people. They have the right to return and their souls are Jewish but they are not "Jews".

Gentiles have not been added but will be in the messianic age. You are not grafted in. That is a Pauline lie.

As to your questions, yes to them all. Jacob did not "wrestle with God", he wrestled with an angel. G-d does not take human form. That is a Grecco-Roman myth. I most certainly have recieved the best blessing from Hashem that any man could have. I, thanks be to the Holy One Blessed be He, left Mitzrayim.

I’m of course talking about the South after the civil War. The North occupied the region with the army and reduced states to military provinces. They used the black population to rule over the whites, many of whom were disenfranchised. The Carpetbaggers and Southern unionists controlled the former confederacy with the aid of black politicians, many of whom were not fit for office, and Republican governments were, sometimes with the best of intentions, tyrannies that looted.misused the resources of the states. Meanwhile the northern and western states refused to allow black emigration from the South.

The white majority, of course, did not accept this and so sometimes with terror and intimidation, they fought back. After the depression hit in 1873, with a majority of whites having regained the right to vote, the “redeemers” took back the governments of the states. The crisis of 1877,ended with the North abandoning both while and black Republicans to their fates. It took about twenty years, but by the mid-90s, most blacks —and a lot of illiterate whites—had been stripped of the right to vote and the South was left in the hands of regimes whose rule was based on white supremacy.

Cotton remained king, and except for some limited industrialization, the South remained an agricultural province, dependent on Northern money until Johnson’s day. The whites of the regions were despised for their poverty and for their repression of the blacks. But they were left in control so long as they stayed in their place. Politically they formed a single bloc and supported the man chosen by northern Democrats. But no southerner was to ask for the office of President. The first southern to come to the office of president in the normal way was Jimmy Carter in 1977. It would not have been possible if segregation had not been broken and both whites and blacks given their freedom of action. The Boll weevil plague in the early 1900s began the death of King Cotton, forcing many blacks to move north despite the lack of welcome from the workers of the north, No accident that the Midwest was the real center of the KKK, at least in its most popular phase.

But after WWI, the agricultural sector throughout the country began its long decline. The weather, the Great Depression, and finally the war, changed the South especially. The blacks were increasingly prosperous and without this, no Civil Rights movement, which in its first phases was largely middle--class.

Despite this respectability, however, it was hardly non-violent. The “marches” were mob-action, where violence, while remarkably well-controlled, was always there. Just ask any white Southerner who had a family member who was an officer of the law. It was a revolution and like all such it created a disrespect for all law, not just unjust law. And to break the back of the Segregation culture, the Civil Rights Act went too far, and overrode many legitimate property. A law that tells you that you cannot rent to a black high school teacher can in the end tell you to do anything. Which is why Goldwater voted against the Civil Rights Act. As in every revolution, much evil comes. Level the forest, plow up the grass, and then comes to wind to blow the soil away.

You may have left Egypt, but how many of the adults of Israel that left Egypt ever made it into The Promised Land? Just two, Joshua and Caleb. And how long did it take the people of Israel to make that relatively short journey? Forty years. You may have made it out of Egypt, but not yet into The Promised Land.

Well that is an excellent post, it’s not quite where I thought you were coming from.

A bit more description of what Reconstruction was like would be good in your historical summary. Most Americans know nothing about it. It included the forced transformation of society, an idea dear to the heart of leftists to this day. Just substitute ‘gay marriage’ or socialized medicine for the controversies of that time and you get the idea.

It’s the model for politicians who find democracy inconvenient and who prefer to rule subjects who have no say in their government. Anyone who thinks that this could only happen after a civil war aren’t paying attention.

"Tell me in your own words what requirements these are."

In no particular order:

Restore the lost Tribes

Rebuild the Temple (was still there in J's day)

Restore the Levitical Preisthood

Restore sacrifices (why is J was the final sacrifice?)

Universal Knowledge of G-d

Universal peace and end of warfare

Gentiles stream to Jerusalem to learn the law (Is 2:2)

Restore the Jewish people to full Torah worship

Restore the Davidic line

Messiah ben David will be a married man with children

Jesus did none of those. Christianity claims 300 + fulfillments but when closely examined, they all are bogus. The passages are either about David, Solomon, not messianic at all or mistranslated. There is no 2nd coming in the OT either. The messiah ben David will perform all tasks in one human lifetime, otherwise, if anyone falls short of the tasks, like Jesus, Bar Kochba, Shabbtai Tzvi and many others, they are just failed messiahs. Messiah will NOT be god or divine. That is a Grecco-Roman myth that made the former pagans of the region accept this new religion of christianity. He will not be a god-man hybrid, a demigod or 100%man100%god (hypostatic union). Furthermore, in the 3rd temple, ALL Jews and Gentiles must be circumscised to enter the temple courts. (Ezek 44) Now how can that be if Jesus ended the law?.

Speaking of which, there are many claims about what Jesus did that are NOT part of the messianic tasks. There is NO prophecy that messiah will end the law or "fulfill" the law. There is NO prophecy that there will be a "law of christ". There is no prophecy that messiah will be divine. There is no prophecy of a second coming. There is no prophecy that messiah ben David will suffer and die. There is no scripture authorizing human sacrifice or human vicarious atonement. There is no scripture that says that ONLY blood atones (Note: Lev 17:11 is incorrectly quoted by Hebrews 9....Lev 17 says DONT EAT blood because its only purpose is atonement...it is not a food, also found in Acts 15) Lev 5:11 FLOUR atones.

There is no scripture that authorizes suffocation on a Roman torture device (cross) as a kosher sacrifice. His throat was not slit, his blood was not sprinkled on the altar by a priest, his fat and ofal not burned.

That is just a partial list of reasons of why we reject him. There are many, many more.
