An Endorsement from France’s First Lady Causes a Stir
The New York Times ^ | June 12, 2012 | STEVEN ERLANGER

France’s new first lady, Valérie Trierweiler, created a small scandal and considerable stupefaction on Tuesday when she lent her support to a party dissident who is trying to defeat Ségolène Royal — President François Hollande’s former partner of some 30 years and the mother of his four children.

It seemed like a scene from Molière — or from “Macbeth” — with Mr. Hollande’s current companion breaking with his party’s position and trying to undermine her predecessor in the president’s affections.

Around noon on Tuesday, Ms. Trierweiler wrote on Twitter, “Courage to Olivier Falorni, who has not been unworthy, who fights unselfishly alongside the people of La Rochelle for so many years.”

A lovely message, certainly. But Mr. Falorni is a Socialist Party dissident who is challenging Ms. Royal, the official party candidate, for a parliamentary seat in La Rochelle. Officials at the Élysée Palace confirmed later on Tuesday that Mr. Hollande supports Ms. Royal in the race, but they refused to comment on the Twitter message.

The initial reaction in France was that Ms. Trierweiler’s post must have been a hoax. That was the position initially taken by the Socialist Party leader, Martine Aubry, who was in La Rochelle on Tuesday to campaign for Ms. Royal. But Ms. Trierweiler confirmed to Agence France-Presse that she had posted the message.

Of course, it would be the NYT that calls an unmarried woman a “first lady”.

In Macbeth, everyone died.

This is France, so in the end everyone will get together for an orgy. It has a certain je ne sais quoi.

Dynasty on the Seine, what a disgrace for France. This could definitely have implications for Sunday’s election.

I know, it’s France, but this is ridiculous, even for them.

That’s what you get, when you elect BoBo François Hollande who ditched the mother of his four children for the ambitious, pushy, indiscreet Valerie, and installed her in the Presidential Palace as “Official Mistress”. Taking France backward to the intrigues of l’Ancien Régime. A very dangerous liaison for the dignity of France.

Get out the popcorn, this is going to be the laughing stock of France, Europe, America, the entire word.
All the more reprehensible in this time of great crisis and instability. President Hollande, Monsieur Normal, won’t even allow the word crisis to pass his lips. Well, now he’s got one.

Does he want to be France’s President, or Valerie’s boyfriend?

It isn’t just the NYT; “Premier Dame de France” First Lady of France is what Valerie Trierweiler is officially called in France, by government communiques and by the media.

We can’t really throw stones. France has “first adulterer” and “first whore.” We have “first homosexual” and “first beard.” I think I’d prefer the former, personally.

Well, “first shack-up” would be too long for the headline. Let’s see, I suggest “first ho”.

If someone were to have made-up a story with the principal characters and events of the last 2 French Elections (including DSK) for a Hollywood movie, they would have been laughed out the door. It is not just a soap opera, it is an absurdist take on a Dadaesque soap Opera.

[Dadaism rejects reason and logic, prizing nonsense, irrationality and intuition.]

Sort of like Sandra Lee, Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s live-in girlfriend, being referred to as the “First Lady of New York”. We have the same situation out here in the Peoples’ Republic of Oregon with Gov. Kitzhaber and his live-in girlfriend.

Great comparison! Andrew Cuomo and “Master Chef” (sic) Sandra Lee. I guess we won’t be seeing them at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral anytime soon.

Oregon has one too? Can she cook? Does she tweet?

This story I’ds the tweet heard round the world.
It has gone viral and global, the number one news story in Framce, and many other countries.
I’m wondering what the impact will be on Sunday’s elections.
Hollande evidently wanted Segolène as a Mknister in his cabinet. But if she loses because of this Valerie treachery, she cannot be in the government.
Anyone have an idea of how this will affect Sunday’s vote?

What Ségolène wants is to be president of the General Assembly and apparently it’s been as much as promised to her, but if she can’t even get a seat in the assembly, obviously she won’t be its president.

The real scandal here in my view is the “parachutage” that goes on and the Socialist arrogance. It’s common here for political personalities (of both parties) to be “parachuted” into an elected position in a place they have zero connection with. Ségolène is president of the region in which La Rochelle is located but other than that has no connection to the town. She decided she wanted the prestigious assembly president post, so the PS decided to “give” her the La Rochelle seat and the voters are supposed to just shut up and vote for her. Her opponent is a longtime local PS militant and was one of the rare socialists to publicly support Hollande from the beginning of his campaign. And that’s how he gets thanked for it.

Harlem Desir, the PS #2, said that Royal’s opponent should step aside to not prevent her voice from being heard in the assembly. As if! Do the voters not get a say? Why even bother with the election if it’s the PS in Paris that gets to decide who gets what. They have a very strange idea of democracy.

Then there is the whole Cécile Duflot parachutage - just scandalous! She got about 4% of the vote when she ran on her own in her home region in 2007 but this time she “wins” a plum assembly seat in a safe PS district in Paris just because the PS decided to give it her (thanks to the PS/Greens pre-election agreement), at the expense of the sitting PS deputy, elected with 60+% of the vote in 2007, who was forced to become Duflot’s “replacement” this time around!!!! And no one seems to bat an eye at it here.

Anyhoo, I’m loving this whole Valerie tweet scandal. It’s exposing them for the hypocrites they are.

It is sad to see the level of moral decay we have experienced in such a relatively short period of time.
