I have to say that the eggs from the local free range guys are noticeably better than even the $4/doz super-duper ones at Kroger. Of course, they’re charging $5-$6/dozen. The yolks are bigger and a much more vibrant yellow, and just make awesome dippy eggs if you are so inclined. Which I am.
Those who went the organic direction did so in order to enhance their profitability, period.
Once again, there is no evidence that eating conventionally grown produce causes cancer or Alzheimer's or anything else. There is no nutritional difference between the two products.
In addition, what chemicals that are applied, either organic or conventional, are dissipated in a matter of hours. The harsh chemicals that Rachael Carson and other environmentalists talk about are long gone.
Except for a few that are labeled for organic application. The one that comes to mind is a product named Black Leaf 40 and some related compounds. The toxin used in these product contain lethal amounts of nicotine and are applied to organic produce to kill bugs. Not only are they lethal to the bugs, but they are lethal to humans as well.
Let me suggest some reading for you. Read a book called 'Trashing the Planet' by Dixey Lee Ray. This is one of the most footnoted books you will ever read.
One can read the convoluted rules from the USA government here: http://ecfr.gpoaccess.gov/cgi/t/text/text-idx?c=ecfr&sid=3f34f4c22f9aa8e6d9864cc2683cea02&tpl=/ecfrbrowse/Title07/7cfr205_main_02.tpl But even after seeing how complex the laws actually are, one can see that LESS CRAP is on the organic crops that the nonorganic. Its not a question of perfect. Also, there are individual farms that are truly concerned about healthy produce or animals and you can visit them and see how they dont just try to loophole their way around USDA laws; they go farther than the laws to grow and raise food tht is as natural and healthy as they can. It makes a huge difference. To me, its like have two bowls of strawberries before you and your hostess sprinkles round up over one bowl. Which one do you wish to sample from? Even if the hostess says you can have MORE from the round up bowl (cheaper price)? Even when you know Round Up causes Alzheimers?
You haven’t had properly prepared Brussels sprouts. I’ve converted my wife with a method I’ve found.
Wash, trim base slightly, quarter lengthwise. Throw in a good sized regular (not non-stick) pan that you’ve preheated with a little olive oil. Season with a few pinches of Kosher salt. Cook for about 10-12 minutes, turning every 3. You’re wanting to develop some good (dark) browning. Serve it up!
No, but being hyper-focused on what you eat and viewing your particular diet as holy makes you a jerk.
I don't care if it is organic, vegan, low carb, high fiber, raw, vegetarian, no sugar or palo, being convinced that what you eat makes you "better then thou" and everyone should eat like you turns you into a Jerk.
A tomato is just a tomato. Eating it will not move you up the spiritual ladder.
Did you forget to add a link on that report?
The real truth is if you don’t grow it or raise it yourself you have no way of knowing if it is really organic. The word organic has so many meanings it is meaningless.
I do not care what people eat or don’t eat- to each his own. I do think people are jerks that act as if they are superior to others because they eat “organic” or are vegetarians or vegans or whatnot. I have found that those type of people are just all around jerks not just jerks about what they eat.
What I wonder is why the kids couldn’t be “spoiled” a little at the grandparents and allowed to eat differently? Used to be considered polite to eat whatever the folks you were visiting ate, no harm in eating different once in a while.
That’s true. That’s a lot. I sell mine for $3/dozen but I undercut others around here.
Thanks for recommending a book.
I am a religious conservative who believes that if the globe warms or cools, it isn’t our fault and there isn’t much we can do about it. I believe we have domi ion over the earth, plants, other animals.
Of course I believe we are ENTRUSTED by Gd to be caring and considerate of nature, but not to worship it. To use its bounty but not to destroy it needlessly.
In today’s cities where we don’t grow or kill our own food, we have to decide what foods we buy are healthiest and best. I appreciate your point of view as having worked in the biz but just because something costs more and sells for more doesn’t mean it isn’t better.
Maybe it just indicates that selfish and self-righteous people buy organic food. I would suspect that self-righteous jerks are just one subset of organic food consumers.
I’m in a north Atlanta suburb. Things are pricier here than most Southern cities. What area are you in?
I’m up rural MA.
Oh I forgot. They can’t watch cartoons on TV because they might view a commercial. I still don’t get that one. I guess they can only watch organic TV. LOL!!!
In addition, the washing of the fruit in the packing process takes away any residual pesticide that may be left over after the efficacy has worn off.
The packing water is usually treated with chlorine which dissipates very quickly. Recently, there has been a movement to treat the water used in the packing process with ozone. Ozone kill all bacteria and viruses inherently on the surface of the fruit. Also, because of the food safety requirements, the water used is frequently tested for these diseases.
I can go on if you wish.
