MSNBC host Hayes apologizes for saying he is 'uncomfortable' calling fallen soldiers heroes

MSNBC host Chris Hayes apologized Monday evening after outraging veterans by saying it makes him "uncomfortable" to describe all fallen soldiers as heroes.

The TV presenter made the controversial comment on the eve of Memorial Day, while kicking off a panel discussion on his show "Up With Chris Hayes" -- noting that it is "very difficult to talk about the war dead and the fallen without invoking valor, without invoking the words 'heroes.'"

Explaining why that makes him uneasy, he added, "I feel ... uncomfortable about the word hero because it seems to me that it is so rhetorically proximate to justifications for more war."

Former service members' group Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), in addition to conservative bloggers and organizations, slammed Hayes for being so conflicted about the term, FOX News reported.

VFW called Monday for an "immediate and unequivocal apology," branding his remarks "reprehensible and disgusting."

Hayes -- who during his Sunday show admitted his concerns might not be justified, while acknowledging there are definite individual examples of heroism -- released a statement later Monday saying he is "deeply sorry" for the gaffe.

"As many have rightly pointed out, it's very easy for me, a TV host, to opine about the people who fight our wars, having never dodged a bullet or guarded a post or walked a mile in their boots. Of course, that is true of the overwhelming majority of our nation's citizens as a whole," he said.

Did you read it? Of course he equivocated and begged off on the excuse that most Americans are similarly inexperienced in combat.

The liberal left does not know how to make a sincere apology because they are not sincere.

I think these pundits think they can analyze political
movements/wars/social changes as if there is no emotional
or personal toll going on. So to them, calling someone a
“hero” is somehow justifying the action the person was
involved in.
Hayes sounds like a “smart” guy who has absolutely no life experience
at all. He just repeats those analytical platitudes he read
in his “studies”...
Inexperienced , pedantic, hopefully unemployed soon.

“FROGMARCH THEM ALL TO LEAVENWORTH” you say?
For speech? Constitutionally protected speech?
Perhaps you do not grasp what the sacrifice of those fallen heroes is about, either. People have the right to say stupid, insensitive things without going to prison. Instead, let his employer impose the necessary sanction after hearing from their viewers.
Your views on the 1st Amendment scare me because of the way liberals can apply them to the 2nd Amendment.

But, in typical fashion, he turned that apology into a blame game. It’s really OUR fault because - apparently - most of us either don’t serve or don’t know anyone who does serve. What that has to do with rude remarks about “heroes” is beyond me.

APOLOGY NOT ACCEPTED !!!
Hayes is only sorry, because someone called him on it.
What this sorry excuse for a hominid did was 1000 times worse than a racial or ethnic slur. He impuned the honor of the men and women who volunteer to protect our country and sometimes die in this endeavor.
MSNBC should fire is butt, like they have done to so many other commentators who only carelessly slipped out a slur or implied something derogatoy in contect.
This sleazeball doesn’t deserve to be in our country.

"I feel ... uncomfortable about the word hero because it seems to me that it is so rhetorically proximate to justifications for more war."

I was immediately annoyed after reading the headline the other day on The Blaze. However, I was considerably less annoyed after watching the video and hearing his reason.

I believe his general point had merit. It is his point, not mine and not yours, but his and to that end I believe he should not render an apology for what he believes.

"It is well that war is so terrible -- or we should grow too fond of it." Gen. Robert E. Lee

It’s one thing to say “the US is too quick to go to war”.

It’s quite another to say “I feel uncomfortable describing fallen US soldiers as heroes”.

Beyond being a piece of leftist internationalist trash thinking, it is also really illogical. The fallen soldiers almost never have a say (other than the say any voter has or doesn’t have) in whether the US goes to war or not.

Hayes is a jerk to make the comments he made on the day he made them.

I consider my father my hero as much for working 30 years in a job he hated in order to feed his family as I do for his Army service in WW2.
