A 17-year-old high school student working two jobs to support her siblings, while juggling college-level classes, spent 24 hours in jail this week for missing too much school, KHOU 11 News reported.
Diane Tran, an 11th-grader at Willis High School in Willis, Texas said she was often too exhausted to get to school in time.
Judge Lanny Moriarty said he warned the student last month not to miss any more classes or she would be violating truancy law, KHOU 11 News reported. When she missed school again, he had her thrown in jail.
"If you let one run loose, what are you gonna do with the rest of 'em? Let them go too?" Judge Moriarty asked the TV station.
Tran said her parents divorced unexpectedly and left town, leaving it up to her to support her younger sister, who lives with relatives, and her brother's university education, KHOU 11 News reported.
Tran works full-time at a dry cleaner and weekends at Waverly Manor wedding venue, where she lives with the family that owns the business.
At school she takes several advanced placement and college-level courses, often staying up all night, a classmate, coworker and friend of Tran's told the TV station.
Judge Moriarty admitted he was using Tran as an example. Willis High School has a warning about truancy violation on its website .
According to Texas truancy law students can have no more than 10 unexcused absences - full days or part days - within six months, and no more than three absences within one month.
...leaving it up to her to support her younger sister, who lives with relatives, and her brother’s university education....

Something seems to be missing from the reporting of the story. She’s putting her brother through college? Huh? How much money does she have to give the relatives to take care of the sister?
She is succeeding without “help” of the gooberment. That kind of self sufficiency is dangerous to statists.
I think the really sick thing is fining this girl $100. What kind of a cruel sick mind decided that! What problem did he think that was going to solve? Does this smug bustard have any idea how hard this girl had to work for that $100 (after taxes)? Now that she is short the $100 who was going to pay to feed and clothe her sister?
Throw the PARENTS in jail.
I think this will be the most ridiculed and humiliated justice in recent times. It’s gone viral.
If some little Vietnamese girl can make it without government help, then why can't a well-healed stable of ivy-league graduates working at one of the larger IB on wall street? I know. I don't understand anything about "high finance [emphasis on high]." We can all see where this sort of thing leads, and it is nowhere good.
Judge is a friggin moron.
He doesn’t give a rat’s rear end.
Way to go, tough guy! By laying down the law against a 17-year-old girl struggling to make ends meet, you're showing the criminals who's boss.
Garnish their wages. We have too many people in jail already.
Again, the Justice of the Peace is only part of this problem. Where were the principal, school councillor, and her teachers? Did they even TRY to discover why this young woman had attendance problems? Did they do a damned thing to help?
This case shows how voters need to be made aware of what’s at stake in down-ballot offices such as judgeships.
I had the same situation as your principal when I was in school in the late ‘60s.
Of course the schools didn’t depend on funding then based on attendance like they do now.
I find it appalling that they are doing this to this young lady. She’s alot tougher and more self-motivated than some of the adults I know.
Texas law allows 17 year olds to quit school if they so wish. She undoubtedly could pass the GED while asleep, and It would leave the judge powerless.
This jail disruption will cause as much damage as a GED.
Interestingly, there are private schools that include real world work at the high school senior level.
Maybe she will pursue a career in law specializing in oversight of judges and lawyers.
I hope this is the nuclear deterrent against the modern idiot bureaucrat, the notion that if you do something really dumb, really boneheaded, it will go viral and your life will be a shambles thereafter. If fear of punishment in the next life won't deter them, maybe making their lives hell on earth will.
Bless your heart, you missed the real one:
9) Deliberate judicial savagery to crush the will of the people through horror and despair.
See "TSA" and "cop dog shootings" for more on this subject.
While we are philosophizing, I’ll have a double, thanks. I especially need it to kill the pain from beating my head against the table trying to answer how I missed something so obvious.
Knowing the exact point d’appui is a science, shooting a dog lover’s dog, fining a girl who works herself to the bone to support her family a $100.
I know Lanny Moriarty PERSONALLY, and he is not a jackass!
There is most likely much more to this story, and I will find out. I sure wont believe ANY news station out of Houston!
Again, the Justice of the Peace is only part of this problem. Where were the principal, school councillor, and her teachers? Did they even TRY to discover why this young woman had attendance problems? Did they do a damned thing to help?America has a lot of problems. A lot of big problems. But right up there near the top is this one: a bloated army of overpaid, overpensioned, overindulged, underworked, under-achieving, incompetent public employees.
We need a massive purge of the public employment rolls. At all levels.
