This is one of those "tough on crime" pricks that doesn't give a shit about human beings in his court. He seriously needs to be thrown out on his ass.

Obviously this student has too much ability to waste it in the socialized education system.

Public education at it’s finest.
One size fits all ... or else

Looses jobs, looses honor student role, both put on welfare. Great job judge.

Question: What kind of judge would fine, and jail, a 17 year old girl - one of three children abandoned by their parents, who is working at two jobs to support her siblings while still managing to be an honor student - for missing too many classes?

Answer: An absolute idiot.

Get a rope (for the judge).

Public school is child abuse.

The Just Us system in Texas is operating as designed.

So, is school a jail or an opportunity? (The schools of course lose MONEY when students don’t attend. )

A little stay in the jail for one night is not a death sentence.

Actually, it has been exactly that for quite a few people.

The judge and the school is more concerned with the amount of time spent in school, rather than the quality of education. Good for the judge, because he most likely made her a conservative.

The only reason they are worried about attendance is because public schools received federal money every day she shows up for class.

The NEA only cares about $$$$$.

My advice would be for her to quit school. She can do that at 17. Take the high school equivalency test, this is accepted in colleges. Go take the SAT (which she will obviously do well on) and attend University this fall.

Also write a polite note to judge to kiss her butt!

Let’s see, the girl is an honor student even if she is missing a lot of classes; she works two jobs and supports her family so the judge throws her in jail where she is probably stripped searched, maybe assaulted (hope there is a followup on this story), maybe loses her jobs because she has been arrested and jailed: Result another budding Asian success story snuffed out.

Some freeping needs to happen (info from the comments to the article):

1. Write or fax the presiding judge for Judge Lanny Moriarty’s district: Presiding Judge Olen Underwood 301 N Thompson, Ste 102 Conroe, TX 77301 (936) 538-8176 Fax: (936) 538-8167 2. Express your disapproval for the astounding “abuse of discretion” in incarcerating an orphaned, non-criminal teenager, the profoundly troubling lack of manifest justice, and the gross neglect in considering all factors. Such judges who are deficient in these ways will continue to abuse innocents, create criminals from otherwise honorable citizens, and to violate fundamental principles of the rule of law. Get this judge removed soon. It will also help other, deficient judges from abusing their discretion also. If many people do this, it WILL have a very BIG EFFECT.

Kid is supporting her family, holding multiple jobs, and an honors student. Judge throws her in jail. I’m just guessing this guy is a democrat since he likes to punish the innocent.

We need more online schooling opportunities for students like this. I know I certainly would have done better if the opportunity had existed in the 80s.

Just an example of what happens when a formerly free society turns its freedom over to the coercive force of government.

Back in the late 1970's, there was a small book entitled, "Freedom in a Nutshell," by Dr. Kenneth W. Ryker. It was, and is, a priceless work which was published in two parts by FEE, the Foundation for Economic Education, and now can be read in two parts, here, and here.

"Freedom in a Nutshell" should be widely distributed today to the youth of our country. They could look around them and see evidences of the truths he outlines in such simple, yet profound, terms.
