In two campaign speeches over the last two days, President Barack Obama has twice mistakenly mentioned "my sons" when defending his administration's regulation requiring virtually all health-care plans in the United States to provide women, without any fees or co-pay, with sterilizations and all Food and Drug Administration-approved contraceptives, including those that can cause abortions.
Obama, of course, has two daughters--10-year-old Sasha and 13-year-old Malia--but no sons.
On Monday, 43 Catholic dioceses and organizations across the country--including the archdioceses of New York and Washington, D.C. and the University of Notre Dame and Catholic University of Americaâfiled 12 different lawsuits against the Obama administration arguing that because the sterilization-contraception-abortifacient mandate would force Catholics to act against the teachings of their faith it violates the First Amendment right to freedom of religion.
At the Iowa State Fair Grounds on Thursday, Obama said: âWe donât need another political fight about ending a womanâs right to choose, or getting rid of Planned Parenthood or taking away affordable birth control. We donât need that. I want women to control their own health choices, just like I want my daughters to have the same economic opportunities as my sons. Weâre not turning back the clock. Weâre not going back there.â
Both the transcript of the Iowa speech distributed by the White House and a video of it posted by the Des Moines Register indicated that Obama mistakenly said âmy sons.â
The video of the speech posted by the Des Moines Register also shows that despite his slip about "my sons," the president was speaking with the help of a teleprompter.
On Wednesday at the Fox Theatre in Redwood City, Calif., Obama made the same mistaken reference to âmy sons.â
âWe donât need another political fight about ending a womanâs right to choose, or getting rid of Planned Parenthood, or taking away access to affordable birth control,â Obama said, according to the White House transcript of his speech. âI want women to control their own health care choices, just like I want my daughters to have the same opportunities as my sons. Weâre not rolling back the clock.â
In other recent speeches, Obama delivered virtually the same line as he did at the Iowa State Fair Grounds and at the Fox Theatre but said "your sons" instead of "my sons."
In Denver on Wednesday, for example, according to the White House transcript, Obama said at a campaign event at the Hyatt Regency: "We certainly donât need another political fight about ending a womanâs right to choose, or get rid of Planned Parenthood, or taking away affordable birth control. I want women to control their own health choices, just like I want my daughters to have the same opportunities as your sons."
Obama also delivered the line that way on May 10 at a campaign event in Seattle.
Earlier this month, at a campaign event at the Rubin Museum of Art in New York City, Obama made a similarly mistaken reference to âmy sonsâ while defending of the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, which expanded the statute of limitations for filing lawsuits alleging discrimination in employment compensation.
âThe first bill I signed, the Lilly Ledbetter Act--a simple proposition--equal pay for equal work. I donât want my daughters treated differently than my sons,â Obama said, according to the White House transcript of that speech.
Obama made yet another similar rhetorical slip back on Jan. 12, while speaking at a campaign event at a private residence in Chicago, Ill. At that event, according to the White House transcript, he also mistakenly mentioned âmy sonsâ in the context of talking about the Lily Ledbetter law.
âThe first bill I signed--a bill that said that weâre going to have equal pay for equal work because I want my daughters treated the same way as my sons,â said Obama. âWe got that done.â
In that instance, the Washington Post and Politico both took notice of the presidentâs slip of the tongue. Post columnist Al Kamen wrote: âBreaking news! President Obama, speaking last night in Chicago at a fundraiser at a private home, unloaded this bombshell: Obama, according to the White House transcript, talked about âThe first bill I signed--a bill that said that weâre going to have equal pay for equal work because I want my daughters treated the same way as my sons.â Sons? What sons? How many? Where? Names? Do the girls know? (More importantly, does Michelle?) Will the boys be joining him on the campaign trail?â
Politico picked up on Kamenâs piece, posting a short item by Byron Tau that said: âThe Washington Post's Al Kamen catches this nugget in President Obama's address to supporters yesterday in Chicago: âThe first bill I signed--a bill that said that weâre going to have equal pay for equal work because I want my daughters treated the same way as my sons.â It's not the first time that a rhetorical hypothetical has tripped up the president, as when a âMuslim faithâ reference was taken wildly out of context.â
Obama, as noted, does not have sons. Nor was he born in Kenya. Nor is he a Muslim.
But it is a fact, as the White House itself reported in its transcripts of his speeches, that on four occasions this year President Obama has rhetorically slipped up and mistakenly talked about âmy sonsâânonexistent though they are.
And in the last two days, in two separate speeches, he mistakenly talked about âmy sonsâ in defending his mandate to force Catholics and Catholic institutions to act against the teachings of their faith in buying and providing health plans that pay for sterilizations, contraceptives, and abortifacients.
The Catholic teachings on sterilization, contraception and abortion that Obamaâs mandate would force Catholics to violate are based in part on the premise that man has no right to veto Godâs decision to bring a new life into the world.
âIt is to be anticipated that perhaps not everyone will easily accept this particular teaching,â Pope Paul VI said in the 1968 Encyclical Letter Humanae Vitae. âThere is too much clamorous outcry against the voice of the Church, and this is intensified by modern means of communication. But it comes as no surprise to the Church that she, no less than her divine Founder, is destined to be a âsign of contradiction.â She does not, because of this, evade the duty imposed on her of proclaiming humbly but firmly the entire moral law, both natural and evangelical.
âSince the Church did not make either of these laws, she cannot be their arbiterâonly their guardian and interpreter,â said the pope. âIt could never be right for her to declare lawful what is in fact unlawful, since that, by its very nature, is always opposed to the true good of man. In preserving intact the whole moral law of marriage, the Church is convinced that she is contributing to the creation of a truly human civilization.â
These people are like Yasser Arafat ~ he was a PLO Employee ~ hardly their leader. He was hired to handle top level administrative affairs.
The DNC hired Obama on to sound good ~ not to do anything imagining that he'd always have top staff people who were smart enough to do their jobs and cover for him in case of slips.
There's an awful lot about this guy none of us know ~
“My, my, my, my, my”
That’s a good theory. I find this very odd. Say it once, a mistake? Twice, WTH? Is he a robot? Is MO preggers with twins? Are they adopting two boys? Where are these sons?
LOL
Actually I think there's a lot of truth in what you said. He thinks he's everybody - a citizen of the world - and ends up being nobody.
If he hasn't got the basic grasp of mechanics by now, I don't want to think about what he'll do with the puppets.
It looks like a Crack up is in his future???
He needs to be replaced and taken away from the Nuclear Button.
Don’t forget Obama not knowing in 2011 that it wasn’t 2008 as he signed it in the Westminster Abbey guest book while visiting London last year, that Hawaii’s not in Asia, that the Malvinas aren’t the Maldives, that Microsoft did not get its start because of the Pentagon’s internet, etc., etc.
There’s only two explanations. One, he either has sons somewhere, or two, his feminist strawmen cliche are getting intermingled with his pro-abort strawmen cliche.
It does seem strange
LOL! Obama actually doesn't even know what planet he's on, so I guess this isn't surprising.
Nor is it surprising that the press is just totally ignoring the whole thing. I'd say that the press is what will get Bambi reelected, except that the RNC went out of its way to pick a candidate who is about as similar to Obama as anybody can get - raving liberal, child of a privileged background, member of a wierd cult - and people will vote for the devil they know over the one they don't.
I suspect that Bambi will actually withdraw, however, because I think he wants a more international position. In that case, Hillary will be the candidate, and she'd probably win easily.
Poor girls. It’s hard when the message you hear is daddy wanted boys instead.
It’s like the movie Anchorman, just insert something stupid into the teleprompter and he would read it. That would be a nice prank to play on Obama.
.
It means Moochelle is having twin sons for her ‘Campaign 2012 Pregnancy”!
Obama’s seen the ultrasound.
This will lock in the reelection...
For a skinny, he sure is a Big Fat Zero.
“As a member of the Choom Gang, Barry Obama was known for starting a few pot-smoking trends. The first was called ‘TA,’ short for ‘total absorption.’ To place this in the physical and political context of another young man who would grow up to be president, TA was the antithesis of Bill Clinton’s claim that as a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford he smoked dope but never inhaled,” writes Maraniss, author of a biography of the 42 nd president.
Agreed. Freudian slip? May explain his interest in pushing the subject - he understands it all too well.
Even sheltered by the drooling press, Obama more and more sounds like he’s coming apart. Will be an interesting campaign season.
Yikes, you’re right!
Hush now!
He's still choked up about losin' Tray'von.
