Just six months after issuing its latest warning about chicken jerky dog treats made in China, the Food and Drug Administration confirms it has logged more than 900 complaints from pet owners who say their dogs either were sickened or died after eating the treats.

The number of complaints has nearly doubled since the story was first reported by ABC News in March. The FDA says its investigation is ongoing and that it continues to test samples of the popular treats, which dog owners across the country say have caused kidney failure in their pets, resulting in severe illness or death.

Consumers have largely blamed two brands for the reported illnesses. Waggin' Train and Canyon Creek Ranch, both produced by Nestle Purina and made in China

It's about politics, not safety. The FDA needs to be purged of any political influence.

I'm happy to hear that you could save your furry companion.

Isn’t there something in the bar code that tell country of origin? I think it’s the first three numbers, not sure.

Dunno. I thought it was in the bar code. Like the first three numbers. I think China is 750.

I honestly don’t know. I do know that after the last big scare, products were supposed to be clearly marked. I believe that politics have trumped safety and information. None of us are surprised by that.

The only thing that’s holding us back is that four large dogs consume a surprising amount of food each day. Our largest is usually 115 to 120 lbs., next weighs 100 lbs., then two at about 85 lbs.

Still, I’m very concerned.

That’s a lot of meat to feed them. My friend added vegetables and rice. And she baked homemade dog “Cookies” as treats. They’re healthier.

No they can't. And if we feed it to them, they trust us and eat it.

There are recipes online for homemade dog treats. Then we'll know they're safe.

Bingo! And since only a very low percentage of their stuff is inspected, much of their crap will get through. Our trade agreements and laws are killing us.

Yes, I plan to start baking treats for them. Mr. T. is going to pick up some of the ingredients that I need, like canned pumpkin and dried oats. I have recipes for two different treats. I probably need more peanut butter, too.

Need hairball relief food too.

We switched the cats to Blue Buffalo Indoor health a couple of years ago. The oldest not only had issues with hairballs, she also had trouble digesting the massive amounts of wheat & corn in most dry cat-foods.

The cats did so well I switched the dogs over to Blue, too.

It is pricey, but they don't seem to eat as much of it as they did the old brand, all their coats are shinier, and none of them have had anymore 'mysterious' cases of the trots, either.
