I was taking a graduate class and one of my fellow students was an American Indian. Somehow the class discussion got on matters of race and he told us how often times when he meets someone new they claim to be part Indian and when they do it is always part Cherokee.

That’s because the Cherokee were the least hostile of injuns, and claiming a more murderous tribe got you shot on the spot.

Claim Cherokee and you were free to go. Like anyone could tell the difference back then.

I myself am partial to the murderous tribes. You knew exactly where you stood with them.
