Delivering a eulogy to his estranged wife Mary, Mr Kennedy, the son of the assassinated attorney-general Robert F Kennedy and nephew of President John F Kennedy, spoke of her troubled life and admitted that she resented him for asking her to give up her career to have children.
Mary Richardson Kennedys family went to court on Friday to try to stop her being interred in a Kennedy family plot in Centerville, Massachusetts.
But the burial went ahead following a funeral service at St Patricks Church in Bedford, New York, attended by stars including the actors Chevy Chase, Dan Aykroyd, Glenn Close, Susan Sarandon and Larry David, and the tennis champion John McEnroe.
Representatives from the Kennedy clan included Ethel Kennedy, Mr Kennedys mother and RFKs widow, Caroline Kennedy, President Kennedys daughter, and Maria Shriver, another cousin, who is married but separated from Arnold Schwarzenegger, the actor turned California governor.
In his tearful eulogy, twice-married Mr Kennedy told mourners how his troubled wife had telephoned him the day before she was found hanging from a barn in the home they once shared in upstate New York.
He said: The day before she died, she called me and said, 'You know me better than anyone in the world. She said, 'I was such a good girl. I said, 'I know you are and you still are. She really fought so hard. She had these demons, and she didnt deserve it. I know I did everything I could to help her.
Mrs Kennedys friends have suggested that she was distraught at the separation from her husband, who filed for divorce in 2010 and is now in a relationship with Cheryl Hines, the star of the television show Curb Your Enthusiasm, but had not completed the process.

Sorry to hear that, RacerX. I went to grade school there. I expected better.
Wonderful Catholic, too, (I just had to add).
They don’t anymore...idiot RFK jr is NYker...the remaining crew is not doing well here..
Because she was still married to a Kennedy. He got to choose.
A divorce was never completed, so he still had rights over such matters.
RFK Jr. reminds me of Michael Schiavo back in 2005—the difference is that Schiavo had his wife starved to death (with the help of the legal system) whereas RFK Jr. merely drove his wife to suicide by his actions.
Maybe he bumped her off so he wouldn’t have to go for a second annulment.

With the Kennedys, it's all about taking care of The Big Head that hangs left or right in their skivvies...
The Kennedys give “debauched filth” a bad name...
“Her family didn’t want her buried with the Kennedys! Why were they not able to stop it?”
Probably the next of kin is the spouse.
Less attention to Chavez in Venezuala and more to Mary in wherever she was probably would have helped - at least we probably won’t have to listen to a lot of self-righteous blather about how we should all live more like a wonderful Kennedy for awhile......
Thank you, about 10 people told me it was because they were still married. I am surprised that he would be so callus that he would go against her families wishes to this degree. Not surprised really he is a Kennedy but what advantage does this give him? He has acted like a total ass about this.
The number of years and children are irrelevant as to the validity of the marriage.
Can you imagine giving a eulogy for your estranged wife who just killed herself and, in trying to absolve yourself of any responsibility, claim only that she resented you for taking her from urban SoHo to pastoral Bedford to HAVE CHILDREN ??? In front of those children, who will have enough to deal with for the rest of their lives? Selfish bastard.
Did he get a first annulment? There was about a three-week gap between the first divorce and his second marriage. Obviously a whirlwind courtship. The second marriage was in April 1994 and their first child’s date of birth is given as “1994” (no month given). Presumably born in late December and just a bit premature...
oh, yeah Mary Richardson Kennedy should have had a will explicitly directing her birth family to have that power. She didn’t so, as her legal husband, Bobby, Jr. had the power to decide. He bought the MA plot on Friday.
Because of the bitterness, one of the articles said none of her 6 siblings attended the funeral, but all the stories referred to the 4 children and one of her sisters wheeling the casket into the church.
I remember years ago, the Revsons of Revlon fame were going through, but hadn’t finalized, a bothersome divorce. He died. She got it all.
