J.C. Penney swings to loss, suspends dividend (Thanks to Ellen Degeneres...)

J.C. Penney Co., which is making major pricing and merchandising changes, said Tuesday that it swung to a first-quarter loss that was larger than expected and that it no longer expects to meet its previous profit forecast for the year.

The net loss was $163 million, or 75 cents a share, compared with a profit of $64 million or 28 cents a share a year earlier. Sales in the quarter ended April 28 fell 20% to $3.15 billion.

Well my wife shops at Penney’s and the bottom line is that women liked the coupon gimmicks, etc. (they liked being confused, which says a lot about the state of the nation today) She buys less stuff now at Penney’s than she did before the change.

Not to mention the oldsters who love them some coupons. Take those away, along with "sales".

When you think about it, physical retail that is working now: Costco, Walmart / Sams, Home Depot. For just about anything else there’s on-line. It can wait.
