BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- Shortly after holding a press conference this afternoon to say that authorities are not giving her the information she deserves about the shooting death of her 13-year-old son, Latonya Walker met with Jefferson County District Attorney Brandon Falls.
Falls said Walker had not contacted him before she and community activist Frank Matthews held today's press conference. Falls said he met with her and Matthews today for 45 minutes.
Normally, Falls said, the DA's office will not contact family members after a decision made not to file charges in a case. They never meet with family's of defendants and the facts of the case suggest Ja'Quares Cortez Walker -- had he survived -- would have been the only one to be charged.
Birmingham police have said Ja'Quares approached a couple in an SUV as it pulled into the gated southwest Birmingham complex where a woman in the vehicle lived. He was wearing a T-shirt covering his face, and was brandishing a loaded and cocked pistol as he demanded them to get out of the car.
The driver pulled a gun and shot Ja'Quares multiple times, hitting him in the chest and abdomen. The teen was pronounced dead on the scene. Police refused to identify the man or woman in the car, saying only that the man who fired the shots was a 35-year-old white man.
"We don't have any evidence at this point to charge anyone with a crime," Falls said today.
Speaking after the meeting with Falls, Matthews said questions remain and he plans to contact Birmingham Police Chief A.C. Roper. Birmingham police spokesman Johnny Williams said today Walker only needs to contact Birmingham homicide detectives if she would like to discuss the case with police.
Matthews, who is black, questioned why the shooter waited until Ja'Quares -- whom Matthews described as a "tall, skinny black kid" -- was standing at his car to pull his own gun.
"I'm a black man and I'm pulling the gun before he gets to my car," Matthews said. Matthews speculated the shooting might have stemmed from a drug deal gone bad, but said he can't be sure until they have all the facts.
Walker, at today's press conference, said she wondered if the five teens with Ja'Quares put him up to the robbery.
Censored.

He was even more screwed up than Trayvon! At least Trayvon had the angelic smile at age 13.
Yeah, yeah.

“Ja’QuRes” is Ebonics for “will end up dead on the street before he’s 18”.
I’m still waiting to hear from his Dad who looked like him.
Fixed it:)

I heard about this case. Ja’quares went off with some older boys. His mother didn’t know where he was going or who those boys were. Some speculated it was a gang initiation thing, in which the older boys told Ja’quares to hold up the people in the car.
Too bad he got killed. I wonder what happened to those boys he was with that night. I wonder if they took off at the sound of gunfire.
A fellow opened fire with a Colt .45 trying to hit another fellow some 200 yards away. The other guy was armed with a Winchester rifle and was an excellent shot. The pistol-packin' hombre died.
The local authorities decided it was clearly a suicide, since no one who was in his right mind would engage a rifleman 200 yards away with a pistol.
Ja'Quares' lawyers and Mom may want to try that line of reasoning. Obviously the young fellow was upset over flubbing a problem on his calculus homework. He never intended shooting anyone. Poor kid just wanted to "end it all."

Eyewitnesses told police “We ain’t seen sh!t”
