SHELBYVILLE, Tenn. (AP) Tennessee police are apologizing after arresting a man for using a $50 bill they thought was fake but that turned out to be real. Police in Shelbyville thought the bill was counterfeit after a convenience store clerk called them. The clerk said a marker used to detect false money didn't show the bill was real. I gots lots of old money in my sock drawer.
Arrogant ignoramuses. I’d sue their butts off.
Sue the cops too for wrongful arrest.
Now he has an arrest on his record for the rest of his life because of an ill informed, poorly trained policeman.
He deserves more than an apology.
Which raises the question, what's in a modern bill that wasn't in the older bills?
Well, I hope he learned his lesson.
Exchange it for a new one at the bank??? Bull puckey. Put that sucker on Evil bay and let the collectors bid it up to a grand.
He deserves more than an apology. To the cop, this was just another day at the office. It is just standard to haul people off to jail. Routine.
The officer should be arrested, strip searched, body cavity searched, “spread those but cheeks”. He should be PERSONALLY sued for his pension. He should be put in personal bankruptcy or lose his house. Then his buddies won’t be quite so quick next time and will take the time to actually do their job.
How about a weeks suspension? With pay, of course.
...and the taxpayers will pay for his legal costs.
Prior to 1968 they were.
The counterfeit detector pens, afaik, indicate the presence of wood fiber, something present in notebook paper, but not U.S. currency, comprised of cotton and linen. So the older currency should pass this test.
Cocaine.
Sounds like an ignoramus police department to me. I wouldn’t call for so much revenge in kind as for a complete re-education on matters of allegedly bogus money. Plus a handsome settlement to the man who went through the hassle based on the bungle and a complete expungement of the arrest forthwith, with legal costs of that fully paid too. Now if that same PD did something like this a second time, I say get medieval on them.
That’s more likely.
Cops=. Tons of power and. Zip,zero, personal responsibility. If they shot your dog after seeing up at the wrong address, we’ll that’s just too damn bad as they were “following guidelines”. worse case they go to work for the county, of the city next door.
Just plow under a handful of these clowns and you could change the world.
It should be but it isn't. The government long ago set a date by which silver certificates to be redeemed and after that all you could get for them was FRNs.
My guess is that the thing was just an old FRN. I've never seen a silver certificate for more than $10.

This stuff happens all the time. It’s not just this department. The only time we ever hear about stuff like this is when it happens to “somebody who is somebody”. The vast unwashed get plowed under all the time and just have to take it with a smile. Most don’t vendors know it’s wrong as the slums are just sweep zones where everybody goes to jail now and then.

I’ve never heard of a “don’t vendor” before.
