Oklahoma, which executes more prisoners per capita than any other state, said on Wednesday it has only one remaining dose of pentobarbital, a key drug used to kill condemned prisoners.
One reason the state is running out is because of a ban on the sale of drugs for such purposes by the European Union, which opposes the death penalty.
Oklahoma has a single vial of pentobarbital left after the execution on Tuesday night of 57-year-old Michael B. Selsor, prison spokesman Jerry Massie said.
Oklahoma is the first state to publicly admit it has nearly exhausted supplies of the drug but other states may follow because of the EU clamp down, said Richard Dieter, executive director of the Death Penalty Information Center in Washington, D.C.
Pentobarbital is a sedative that is the first of a three-drug cocktail administered by Oklahoma. It is followed by vecuronium bromide, which stops breathing, and potassium chloride, which stops the heart.
Oklahoma was the first state in the country to use pentobarbital in 2010 after a shortage of another anesthetic, sodium thiopental, caused penal officials in death penalty states to look for an alternative.
Eleven other states also use it. Arizona and Ohio use a single injection of pentobarbital for executions while nine states use the multi-drug protocol, according to the Death Penalty Information Center.
Lundbeck Inc, the only manufacturer of pentobarbital, is located in Denmark and forbids its U.S.-based wholesalers from selling the drug for lethal injections, while the European Union forbids its member countries from exporting drugs for executions.
Oklahoma could resort to another anesthetic never used before in executions, Massie said, or it could try to tap existing supplies of pentobarbital.
A third option, he said, would entail going back to sodium thiopental.

Put them in an airtight room. Give them a 6 pack. Pump the air out.
Problem solved!
“Isn’t Ketamine available?”
Only for animals and kids, it can cause hallucinations in adults.
It’s late, I just realized we’re discussing a veterinary use.
Heroine, that’s the ticket.
Excellent idea. You should run for Governor.
And, I don’t even think they’d suffer, right?
Pretty much instant death if the dose is high enough, pure enough and you’ve got no tolerance.
Better than shooting them, I think.
Or, you could shoot them.
How long will we let the Left rule?
Not much longer, I hope.
Nitrogen Asphyxiation - cheap, pain free, no mess, no fuss. Hook up a breathing mask to a tank of Nitrogen. Turn on 1.1 atmospheres and wait till the brain waves stop.
These threads always bring out the worst in FReepers, and without reading a single reply, I’ll bet that this one is no exception.
Where are Jason, Michael Meyers and Freddie Kruger now that we need them?
Bullets are cheap. SO is cyanide. A mob of the victims’ families will do it for free.
Got electricity?
Got rope?
Let’s party!
What, the stuff comes from China and there been a run on it due to Chinese dissidents?
Put them under anesthesia and cut ‘em open. Harvest organs, skins, bones, whatever physically useful and transplant-able and scientifically useful, then discard the corpse.
Correct but when you hold your breath after a deep breath the pressure (partial pressure of oxygen) is greater as the pressure in your lungs is greater than normal because you have a large volume of air in your lungs and are holding it. Thus you can remain conscious for a greater time than normal.
60 to 90 seconds of pure nitrogen will do the trick for unconsciousness but it must be continued for several minutes after to ensure death.
Valium mix 1000 mg in 250 ml and start infusing as fast as your little heart desires. Then give 100 mg of Pavulon. Follow with regular insulin oh.... about 300 units should about do it, then KCL mix a bag of 200 meq in 100 ml of normal saline , hook it up to an infusion pump and check on the guy in about 12 hours.
or a guillotine ....quick and 100% effective.
third option is "dealers choice". the victim's family gets to chose the method of execution.
These toads make it seem so "scientific" and precise on the "exactly" correct drugs and ONLY those drugs can kill a person humanely. How about a rapid sequence intubation without intubating the patient. Just knock them out, paralyze them and see if they can hold their breath for an hour and a half. I've never seen anybody hold their breath that long.... but I'd be willing to try to give the fellows on death row an opportunity.
I like it. I’ll take one in each arm. thanks
You can accomplish a change of the gas mix from normal atmosphere to pure nitrogen without a mask or the knowledge of the subject. The only clue is a light headed feeling as you pass out from insufficient oxygen. Totally odorless and tasteless. The standard cyanide gas chamber has a distinct odor and takes 3 to 13 minutes. The subject is aware of the effects and there is a toxic gas to clear before the body can be removed. The “holding your breath” to avoid the poison was usually an exercise in panic. That doesn’t occur with nitrogen.
Zap em. There’s an infinite supply of electricity available. No shortage, no waiting!
I think you guys are getting caught up in the details - the bigger issue here is that this is one of what I fear may be many examples to come of America being at the mercy of foreign countries to tell us what we can and can’t have, to dictate our “morals” by their own.
The sobering truth that we’re not a manufacturing power anymore - I remember a short while after 9/11 when there was a national discussion, after a biological weapons scare, about smallpox and how it would take 2+ years to innoculate the entire country because the vaccine was only manufactured in one country (or two at most), and it wasn’t on THIS side of the ocean.
“Theres an infinite supply of electricity available.”
Not if BHO keeps shutting down coal plants :-)
I don't think that would be legal, because the law requires an injection. Perhaps nitogen bubbles could be injected.
Taking a page out of China’s book?
When did bloodlust become so prevelant?
