What was supposed to have been two days of high level talks between Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, and Chinese leaders has turned into a diplomatic fiasco over the fate of one man.
CBS News correspondent David Martin reports that, at first, it was all smiles and hugs. Chen Guancheng couldn't thank American diplomats enough. He even phoned Secretary Clinton to personally thank her. For their part, the Americans seemed delighted to have ended a standoff that began six days ago when Chen escaped from house arrest and took refuge in the U.S. embassy.
Then, as Chen was taken to a Chinese hospital to be reunited with his family, the wheels started to come off a deal which was supposed to have allowed him to remain in China free of persecution. It happened just as Chris Johnson, who until two weeks ago was the CIA's top China analyst, predicted it would.
"In terms of trying to somehow negotiate with the Chinese a means to guarantee his safety within China, there's just too much chance that the Chinese regime would renege and then the administration would look terrible," Johnson said.

This is going to be fun, with the US media having screamed themselves hoarse about the way Obama made the Chinese bow down to him, but now the grim reality becoming more and more clear.
What will US journoz do? Just not report the story at all?
China’s going to make this guy look REALLY bad.
The really great part is Hillary having to speak out on behalf of an ABORTION OPPONENT —she must be tickled pink about THAT...
All I can think of is that SNL skit with the
chinese premier...
Looks like Hil and Bar screwed the pooch on
another international incident.
He has sure changed the way the US is viewed
around the world...
Don’t kid yourself....This is another case of Obama humiliating Hillary. What does he have on her??
The lesson here is that next time we elect a communist , he better be oriental.
Very bizarre. Basically, it’s Bambi carrying out his pro-marxist-dictator policy, but you’re absolutely right, it’s also about humiliating Hillary Clinton.
That said, I don’t see why she puts up with it. Maybe she’s biding her time and she and Bill will go rogue on Bambi and challenge him for the nomination?
So, Obama did the wrong thing for freedom and should apologize to China for it?
Bow now, 0bowMao, and we’ll go eat some bow wow.
Very sad a moral, courageous, and honest man was turned over the red rat bastards........and then Obama and Hillary gave him back to the Chinese.
Fodder for the opposition this November ...
This administration is terminally naive in dealing with totalitarian regimes. I am mortified to be a member of the executive branch.
Gutsy call, Obama!
Personally, I never “handled” one of those, whatever it is, so I guess I might be free to go.
I'm afraid it wasn't the CCP that ejected the guy from the embassy. The buck stops at Obama's desk, although I'm sure he'll try to find a way to stick it to some junior State Department staffer.
No Sir!
But wasn't it just last week that Joe Biteme was bragging about Obama’s “big stick”? He will Kowtow again and unless we get ourselves straightened out we all will be too soon enough!
If the guy's story that Chinese authorities threatened his wife's safety is true...and I'd wager that it is..then it's understandable that he'd voluntarily leave in order to save her.In such a scenario the entire blame rests with the Butchers of Beijing. But it also seems possible that it's all just a cover story to conceal the fact that Osama caved, perhaps on a promise of campaign contributions.
Where’s Benny when we need him? Chow Mein would know exactly what to tell those Chicoms.
Gutsiest call in 500 years!
“Dont kid yourself....This is another case of Obama humiliating Hillary. What does he have on her??”
It’s almost as if he is looking for an out and is trying to goad Hillary into announcing a candidacy.
