A beating at Church and Brambleton

Wave after wave of young men surged forward to take turns punching and kicking their victim.

The victim's friend, a young woman, tried to pull him back into his car. Attackers came after her, pulling her hair, punching her head and causing a bloody scratch to the surface of her eye. She called 911. A recording told her all lines were busy. She called again. Busy. On her third try, she got through and, hysterical, could scream only their location.

Church and Brambleton. Church and Brambleton. Church and Brambleton.

It happened four blocks from where they work, here at The Virginian-Pilot.

Two weeks have passed since reporters Dave Forster and Marjon Rostami - friends to me and many others at the newspaper - were attacked on a Saturday night as they drove home from a show at the Attucks Theatre. They had stopped at a red light, in a crowd of at least 100 young people walking on the sidewalk. Rostami locked her car door. Someone threw a rock at her window. Forster got out to confront the rock-thrower, and that's when the beating began.

You pretty much posted exactly what I was going to write. When there's a crowd of 100 and things start to get ugly, who in their right mind gets out of the car? That's when you floor the gas pedal and get out of Dodge.

The article didn't mention anything about alcohol but I have to wonder if the guy who got out of the car had been drinking. To say he wasn't thinking right is putting it mildly.

I'm willing to bet that the group of 100 weren't necessarily all focused on the two in the car at the time. The guy probably thought he was only dealing with a few punks, not everybody in the whole neighborhood. Once the others saw the ruckus, then they swarmed him.

On the other hand, this guy could be one of those left-wing idiots who has never really interacted with black people in real life on the street, and so wouldn't allow himself to consider the possibility that these people were actually less than perfect angels.

Don't know the whole story, but rather than pour derision on the victim, I'll save it for the animals who attacked him.

You might get 5 or 6 of them and that might make the rest of them scram, then you'd be in George Zimmerman's shoes, only worse, depending on how many of them you shot. If however many shots you got off did not make them scatter, then you'd be dead.

Drive away and let your insurance take care of the broken window, it's just not practical to face off against 100 people.
