Norfolk Virginia. Demographics: 47.1% White, 43.1% African American, about 6% Latino. Mayor is a Democrat, and has been mayor there since 1994. Tells me all I need to know.

I first came to Norfolk back in 1979, when I was in the Navy. One of the areas we were told to stay away from? Church Street. Church and Brambleton is in the “projects” and incidentally the location of the Martin Luther King Jr. memorial.

He should have floored it and got the hell out of there. He shouldn't have been there in the first place.

There are a few areas of Norfolk into which I don't venture. This is one, and Park Place is another, along with the area known as the “Texas” streets.

Discretion is the better part of valor.
