The FR Canteen is Free Republic's longest running daily thread
specifically designed to provide entertainment and moral support for the military.
The doors have been open since Oct 7 2001,
the day of the start of the war in Afghanistan.
We are indebted to you for your sacrifices for our Freedom.
Think about the worst intellectual matchups possible. For instance, what if we put Albert Einstein in a room with a first-grader to debate the theory of relativity? Or how about George Washington Carver versus a middle-schooler discussing biochemical engineering?
Its silly to think of putting these pairs together for discussions. One is the ultimate expert; the other would know little if anything about the topic.
Heres another one: God versus anyone arguing about His plan for mankind. Now were talking mismatch! Yet we often hear of people trying to explain away Gods matchless wisdom and how their way is better than His.
I received a letter from a man in prison who said: I came to the point in my life where I finally accepted the fact that God is real and the Creator of everything. I grew tired of trying to do things my way. When I started humbling myself and accepting Gods Word, I found the answer.
How ridiculous to reject Gods plan of salvation because we think we know better! Only by placing our trust in Christ for the forgiveness of our sins can we be reconciled to God (John 14:6; Rom 3:23; 6:23). Are you still trying to do things your own way, thinking you know best? (Prov. 16:25). Agree with God and go His way.

Thanks, Galz, for another wonderful story about one of our brave and true. They always make my heart glad to know we have men and women who loved this country that much!
WOW, I don’t know where to begin as I sit here looking through my sea service book.
I was a crew member aboard the USNS Brostrom, in several unlicesed engine room positions, from April 1970 until December 1972.
I left the Brostrom to return to San Francisco to sit for my Engineering Officer License. I was sucessful and was issued a License for Steam and Motor Unlimited Horsepower.
I served on several other ships after that, but was not assigned to the Brostrom again.
The Brostrom was a heavy-lift ship and could lift 150 tons with either of two large booms mounted amidship. We carried military cargo from various locations in the Far East to various ports in Viet Nam. We carried break-bulk cargo, vehicles, mike-8 landing craft, barges, tugboats, etc..
A very interesting time in my life. A good ship and a good crew.
I resigned in Dec. 1975 at the insistence of my wife who was unhappy that I was gone all the time. Bad decision on my part as we were later divorced. I should have divoeced her in 1975 and stayed on the ships.
