Should a big bald guy named Bubba be in the cell to make them his b@#$? Or, if there are more than one kid in the holding cell, do they get to choose a Bubba and he picks the kid he wants to bend over? This is getting weird.
Obviously this shows what happens to children that are not handcuffed at the age of 6.
I dunno what is going on... back in my day if a kid hit a teacher, they were permanently expelled...
It works in the Himalayas. But how would Jesse Jackson marry the mothers of his own love kids? Would he convert to Mormonism and secretly make them honest women in illegal bigamous marriage ceremonies?
I think it was breaking news about a year ago.

Salecia Johnson, 6, was accused of tearing items off the walls and throwing furniture in an outburst Friday at Creekside Elementary School, Macon television station WMAZ-TV (http://on.wmaz.com/HPb7nr ) reported.
Police said the girl knocked over a shelf that injured the principal.
The police report says when an officer tried to calm the child in the principal's office, she resisted and was handcuffed. The girl was charged with simple assault and damage to property.
Or, do you believe such behavior should be excused simply on the basis of age?
From the article, she was charged with destruction of public property and assault (on the principal). I agree completely that we have criminalized behavior by children (including teenagers) that a couple of generations ago would have been handled privately by teachers, parents or neighbors. The problem is that teachers are forbidden to use physical means to enforce discipline, many parents are AWOL, and neighbors don't get involved for fear of criminal charges or civil lawsuits. What would you have done if faced with this situation?

According to my father-in-law, who designs schools for most of the metro Atlanta school boards, the padded “quiet rooms” where unruly children were once placed have been phased out. So, the teachers can't discipline them and the administrators can't separate them from the other students until they calm down. Again, what would you have done?
Not in the school I went to. If you had behaved that way, you may not have been handcuffed, but you would have been forcibly restrained and had some serious punishment.
Hitting a teacher in the face? Doesn’t matter to me what color you are, you’re gone from any school trying to educate decent kids.
The behavior described is evidence of incompetent parents and a child out of control - calling the police is probably a more appropriate response in this day and age than how my principal would have responded back in the day.
The police and the cuffs were not prompted by her color, but by her actions, and her actions have no color.

When I was a kid, I can think of a good handful of fights in HS or Jr. High (real ones, not just teenaged chest thumping) where kids got bloody noses, or stuff was broken.
But in elementary school? With furniture being thrown, or the principal being hit with a shelf? No way. I might have blocked it out over the years, but I don't remember even hearing about something like that. Jeez, I can see my kids as 6 year olds having tantrums (heck, I HAVE seen it!) but them getting really destructive? And in the principal's office, to boot? No way.
Someone earlier on the thread asked where her father was. Good question, IMHO. Another really good one is why a number of adults (I'm thinking teacher, principal, some other school admins, and at least one cop) can't figure out a way to safely restrain a 6 year old girl without tossing her in lockup. That's a question I'd like to get answered - what caused that response? Were all of the adults that helpless, or was the girl that irrational and out of control?
Well if someone did that when I was in school they would be in trouble for sure. Assault should not be tolerated. Failure to disciple this child is what allows her to think she can get away with it. Obviously the parent will not do anything to her. If me or my siblings had done anything like this, the school or police would have been the least of our worries. Mom and Dad would be so much worse.
Hopefully this experience will end the destructive path the child was heading down. Destruction of property and injuring someone is not acceptable.
This tantrum happened in the principal’s office, not in a class room.

Many schools in Georgia once had padded “quiet rooms” for just this kind of situation, but it is my understanding that these rooms have been eliminated.

I would not think it OK for my child to behave that way. It wouldn’t happen, because she would learn some respect, restraint and responsibility long before she went to school.
And yes, if my child were behaving so out of control, I might well call the police myself to try to instill some sense of appropriate behavior in her young mind.
But - parents who raise children who behave like that are always up in arms when someone else has to deal with what they’ve produced.

Another poster said that the school systems are phasing out the "rubber rooms" where the really unruly kids get tossed until they calm down. (I remember one in my school. It didn't get much use, as I recall)
Sez Me, when the best and safest punishments are taken away, cops and handcuffs start looking like a viable alternative. Especially if the school admins are dim bulbs anyway and don't have much to work with, to begin with.
Of course. I think we all did.
Well I sure didn't and neither did either of my now grown children.
