Can Newt Gingrich keep his sputtering campaign alive?
csmonitor.com ^ | April 14 2012 | By Brad Knickerbocker

Newt Gingrich, former House Speaker and a major Washington figure for decades, has been pushed to the fringes of presidential campaign discourse.

Although he’s still formally a candidate for the GOP’s 2012 nomination, he describes Mitt Romney as "far and away the most likely" GOP nominee – a fact made all-but-certain by Rick Santorum’s dropping out this week. Mr. Santorum had been Romney’s last remaining serious challenger.

With $4.5 million in debt, the Gingrich campaign organization has been operating on a shoestring as his principal financial angel, billionaire casino owner Sheldon Adelson, began moving toward the Romney campaign.

“It appears as though he’s at the end of his line,” Adelson said recently. “Because, I mean, mathematically, he can’t get anywhere near the numbers, and it’s unlikely to be a brokered convention.”

Thanks for that explanation. So, if I understand correctly, his delegates will be denied to Myth unless he drops out. I guess an endorsement might make a difference...but maybe not.

With the challenge to Fla and Arizona and upcoming primaries, anything could happen. This has been one crazy primary! I hope Newt can hang in.

A good site to delve into the various rules/regulations of each state regarding their primaries is The Green Papers. They have one of the best collections of data that I’ve found and have used it as far back as the 2000 campaign.

A few problems with your theory that the last conservative in the race for nomination has no chance.

When it sinks in among the GOP electorate during the next four months that Romney is a corporate raider who refuses to release his tax returns, that he has real problems with what is sure to be the big issues of the campaign - fiscal and tax issues, that he is still the gaffe-master with no broad appeal to the average voter, and that he intends to run to the left to try to take away democrat voters - the delegates and down-ticket politicians will not commit suicide for their party’s pre-determined presidential aspirant.

There hasn't been a SINGLE poll of the primary race showing the head to head numbers (Gingrich vs. Romney) since Santorum dropped out.

The media and the RNC insiders are scared to death that Gingrich my take all of Santorums supporters and re-surge a final time and deny Romney the nomination. So they came up with a plan to simply stop polling and pretend the race is over.

Thanks for the information! The rules concerning delegates in various states sure is difficult to keep straight! So many questions remain as to accurate up to date delegate counts.

There was a great article a couple of days ago that laid it out for all to see....that the RNC insiders are backing Romney for one reason and one reason only, and it’s not they think he can win......it’s so they can hold on to their perks and earmarks, for them.

It’s corruption pure and simple, not a thought about what’s good for America. It’s all about what’s in it for them. They understand full well that Newt will end the gravy train as they know it.

He knows it’s an impossible dream but he must have some reason for staying in.

He can’t have much money. Staying in does get him some exposure but to what end?

It’s impossible to guess what’s going on in Newt’s brain ... quite a lot I’m sure, but the money thing will stop him if nothing else does.

Are those numbers calculated using the proportional delegates as required by law?

What was done with Missouri’s delegates?

“Now that Santorum as dropped out of the race, I do wonder where the Santorum delegates will go.”

To Obama’s Democrat challenger Randall Terry?

He knows it’s an impossible dream but he must have some reason for staying in.

The company he created is filed for bankruptcy, and he apparently burned his bridges with FoxNews, so he doesn't have another gig, unless CNN hires him.

This is the first point in the race where it’s an open conservative v liberal contest, rather than conservative v conservative.

NOW IS THE TIME FOR CONSERVATIVES TO POUR ON THEIR SUPPORT FOR THE CONSERVATIVE CANDIDATE. All we have to do is keep Romney from getting half of the delegates.

We can do this!

I thought any primaries before April 1 were supposed to be proportional, so how are any of those listed as winner-take-all?

“Can Newt Gingrich keep his sputtering campaign alive?”

Sure. If all the fervent supporters that post here on FR will send him $10, $15 or $20 thousand dollars then Newt can keep on flying private jets here and there to campaign.

Your candidate needs your money!

no /sarc is necessary or appropriate

I had intended to vote for Rick Santorum a week from Tuesday in the PA primary but now I'm voting for Newt.

Same here in Delaware. "Go Newt."
