Pat Buchanan: Obama's Zimmerman problem
Human Events ^ | April 13, 2012 | Patrick J. Buchanan

Posted on 04/13/2012 2:49:28 AM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

God save me from my friends; I can take care of my enemies.

That thought must be coursing through the mind of President Obama right now as his White House rigs for silent running in the murder trial of George Zimmerman.

Obama foolishly inserted himself into this volatile case weeks ago, and injected the issue of race. Expressing empathy with the family of Trayvon Martin, Obama flashed a signal of racial solidarity:

"If I had a son, he would look like Trayvon."

Obama also implied that he shares the liberal perspective that America is a country where black kids must walk in daily fear of white racist vigilantes.

"All of us have to do some soul-searching to figure out how does something like this happen. And that means that we examine the laws and the context for what happened, as well as the specifics of the incident."

Translation: The death of Trayvon tells us something is wrong with America.

To most Americans, this is a slander against their country, refuted by the statistics on interracial crime. Obama, however, buys into it.

Angela Corey, the special prosecutor, says that the charge against Zimmerman of second-degree murder was based on evidence and not influenced by the weeks of demonstrations, demands and threats from black leaders.

Perhaps. But from what the pubic knows, a charge of second-degree murder, which carries a sentence of 25 years to life, does not seem to stand up.

To convict, prosecutors must convince all 12 members of a jury that not only was Zimmerman in no danger of bodily harm, he did not believe he was in danger of bodily harm. He simply killed Martin in a "depraved" state of mind.

Nothing revealed so far seems to support that theory.

Zimmerman saw a tall stranger, hooded and acting suspiciously. He called the cops. He did not tell them the man was black. They had to ask him whether the suspect was black, white or Hispanic.

"He looks black," said Zimmerman.

The CNN report that Zimmerman, on the call to the cops, used a racial slur, "(bleeping) coon," has been withdrawn. What Zimmerman said was that it was "(bleeping) cold" outside.

Came then the fight. Two eyewitnesses say they saw Zimmerman on his back being beaten and screaming for help.

A cop at the scene said Zimmerman had a bloody nose and a gash on the back of his head. Zimmerman's family says Trayvon banged George's head on the sidewalk. Film of Zimmerman entering the police station that night shows bruising on the back of his head.

Trayvon was found lying face down. If Zimmerman had been on top and shot him, would not Trayvon have been found on his back?

Zimmerman's family says Trayvon started the fight with a fist to the nose, and George went down. Trayvon is not here to tell his story. But a natural question arises:

Why would Zimmerman, with a holstered gun to protect himself, close with and start a fistfight with a teenager half a head taller? A grown man with a gun his adversary does not know he has -- would he not more likely stand some distance away, to pull it out if needed?

The prosecutors must have discovered new evidence to indict for murder. For all of the testimony from Zimmerman's side and the eyewitnesses seems to create more than a reasonable doubt that he committed a murder.

Where is Obama's political problem?

With the election on, the case has begun to divide the nation along racial lines. And Obama's allies are doing it. It is Jesse Jackson and the Black Caucus crying that Trayvon was "hunted down like a rabid dog in the street," that he was "murdered and martyred," that it was a "hate crime."

"It's a disgrace that man (Zimmerman) hasn't been shot yet," says Mike Tyson. The New Black Panther Party has put out a poster offering a $10,000 reward that reads, "Wanted: Dead or Alive."

The face on the poster is George Zimmerman.

Trayvon is the victim here, but George Zimmerman is beginning to look like a victim -- of lynch law and mob rule.

With the Panthers and Tyson calling for vengeance and vigilante justice, where is Attorney General Eric Holder? Out congratulating Al Sharpton for bringing political pressure on Florida to indict.

Is this how justice is advanced in Obama's America?

Mayor Michael Bloomberg has denounced Florida's "Stand Your Ground" law -- which may be Zimmerman's defense -- as "a license to murder" and an excuse for "vigilante justice."

Bloomberg seems about to lead a crusade against the National Rifle Association and for repeal of stand-your-ground laws in the two dozen states that have enacted them.

Given their huge emotional investment in this case, how will black leaders and black America react if Zimmerman walks?

And how will the rest of America react to that reaction?

And if Zimmerman, Trayvon, race, guns and stand-your-ground become voting issues this fall, how good is that for Barack Obama?

I know Pat Buchanan. I campaigned for him here in Louisiana in 1996. There’s no doubts he’s got his faults and baggage.

But when he sets pen to paper, he’s as good as it gets.

They have a whiteboard, and five obsessions on that board: Latinos, women, college kids, union members, and blacks. With this formula....you will win (as spoken by the experts within the team). So anything that occurs....that has consequences over the election....there is an immediate statement made. As silly as you or I think of these statements....they support the core group.

The common strategy of simply dealing with topics....won’t work for his election campaign...because there just aren’t alot of positives to chat about.

What Obama says or does in this case won`t have any effect on him politically.

The huge majority within the foggy-headed American electorate have no idea he made the Trayvon Martin comment.

Pat is one of the five to ten most eloquent conservative writers. I include Peggy Noonan and George Will in that mix as well as Victor Davis Hanson. One reads their stuff for content of course but the words have a rhythm, meter, and tone that is often magic.

The Left-lock on the "Info-tainment" industry has worked hard to keep the American public fat, very dumb, and unhappy with Republicans.

He thinks that black solidarity of voting for the Dems will outweigh the number of Latinoes and whites who may not vote for him this time around because of this.

Completely disagree. A large swath of "regular Americans" are well aware of both the Zimmerman case, and Obama's opening salvo regarding it. It was all over the news, and even people who don't refresh FreeRepublic 800 times a day know and grasp the blatant racist messages being put forth in the media. It will hurt Obama politically and he needs to keep it up. The Chicago "community organizer" and professional troublemaker is being exposed for exactly what he is.

The left always relies on a misinformed but riled up populace. I have a friend who always parrots to me what he ‘knows’ is true, and it is almost always a repeat of what he gets from the MSM. Regarding this case, he thinks that Zimmerman followed Martin and attacked him, and that Zimmerman had no injuries to back up his story. He states these things as though they are established facts (he's college educated). Yes, he voted for Obama.

This went "viral" as the result of coverage by a local TV station. The Negro leaders jumped on it before they quite realized that young Trayvon of the Hoodie and Gold Teeth was not quite all one might want in a martyr.

Then the Mulatto in Charge jumped in with the "Son" comment, when depending upon to whom he was married, his "Son" might look like anyone, including the two English tourists who were butchered by a Negro in Miami. His mother and grandmother look like the woman who was butchered by Negroes in Oklahoma. Who knows what his "Son" might look like. To white voters with half-a-brain (talk about minority groups!) he looks like a fool.

Holder jumped in. He is vowing justice for Zimmerman, but strangely ignoring the violent threats from the New Black Panthers, and praising Al Sharpton.

To answer your question: Yes, Obama is stupid. But no, his handlers on Team Obama are not. It got away from them, but they will spin it back into control. If the election were tomorrow, they would win it.

5-dollar gas, 10%+ real unemployment, insane economic and energy policies, high taxes, etc. mean nothing to Obama's base in the big electoral vote states. That base has already decided Zimmerman's fate, and if we are not very careful, ours, too.

If you're referring to Obama's personal comments that he improperly inserted into the situation, I had a slightly different take on that aspect of things

So many things have happened during this singularly ugly and destructive Presidency which, when combined, suggest a slightly different reason, at least to me.

I'm becoming more and more of the opinion that it's simply a matter of Obama shooting from the hip, and his advisors either not being bright enough regarding diplomacy and forming their message to talk him out of doing these things or unwilling to, for whatever reason.  A man-child as narcissistic and  arrogant as Obama is must be absolutely awful to work with on a day-to-day basis, even for someone who shares his extreme ideology, and his policy yes-men may be cowering in fear of losing their lucrative jobs.....or being labeled 'racist' for daring to question him, as is the normal procedure his lackeys have employed for dealing with members of the public who dare disagree.

Obama has said so many breathtakingly un-Presidential things and spoken improperly so many times that I simply have a hard time believing that much of what he says is the product of a serious team's serious counsel.  I believe that he honestly feels he is far smarter than his advisors and rarely consults them.  Nothing he's said or done suggests to me that such a frightening scenario isn't exactly what's occurring......he is THAT childish and THAT arrogant.  He thinks that he can bully the Supreme Court, for Goodness sakes

I cannot comment on if Obama is actively involved with promoting this issue but at the very least while its viral its taking attention away from the issues of him being illegally in control of America.

Events like this will happen every week, its all about smoke in a house of mirrors.

Its a Communist thing.

(1)Latinos
(2) women
(3) college kids (and faculty)
(4) union members
(5) and blacks.

That's the Democrat base, OK. Our only chance is to win very heavy support from the women. God help the nation.

Of course, you are correct. But stop and consider that he, like Al Sharpton, is really not talking to you. Team Obama's calculation is that they don't need you.

Unfortunately you are wrong. A large majority of Americans have their heads filled with MSM rubbish and believe that Zimmerman was profiling and committed murder.
