MIAMI (CBSMiami) – George Zimmerman has been charged with second-degree murder for the shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, according to the Associated Press.
Additionally, Zimmerman has been taken into custody, but it hasn’t been revealed where he is being held.
CBSMiami has confirmed that State Attorney Angela Corey, who was appointed as a special prosecutor in the case, will hold an announcement about the charges at 6 p.m. in Jacksonville.

I got links all over the Blog post, I read it on one of them. But I could be mistaken. I know the dispatcher said “you don’t have to do that” in response to some kind of assertion by Zimmerman that he was going to follow Trayvon.
We know Zimmerman at some point followed Trayvon, so what’s your point?
There’s a sequence involved: a charge is made, that charge is that the individual unlawfully took someone’s life, the case goes to trial, at that point the defendant claims it was self defense, and the jury decides whether the claim that he unlawfully took someone’s life is true or whether they accept his excuse.
There’s nothing to keep the defendant from claiming it was self defense to the police, but that has no impact if the prosecutor decides to lodge a charge.
I think your route’s circular because a case where the defendant claimed self defense wouldn’t be a crime under your construct. How would false claims of self defense be adjudicated if just saying it was self defense makes it a non-crime?

They’re still demonstrating at the University of Delaware tonight. They look a bit dumb as they flash pictures of the protesting students because George is now in custody.

I appreciate your analysis for its cynicism — and accuracy. This charge and prospective trial serves many interests rather well (conceivably even Zimmerman’s). Enriched by Ms. Corey’s pandering, these: defuse the issue as a political rallying point for Obama; immunize the governor from attacks from the left; delay the proceedings until after the election; render DOJ civil rights charges unlikely; make “this is for Trayvon” crimes by blacks look even more egregious; allow for a proper public airing of the actual evidence; and, set a standard for conviction that seems impossible to meet, pending substantial now-hidden evidence. A trial will be an ordeal, but is Z. so blameless, even by his own account, that he deserves a free pass? He seems to trust the “system” enough to cooperate and give information against himself (he is, after all, a registered Democrat and Obama voter; Conservatives should be cautious in embracing him).
I wonder if White Hispanics, Whites and Hispanics will gather in groups for the reading of the verdict and cheer if a NOT GUILTY verdict is reached.

In today's America, where evil is called good and good is called evil, Zimmerman is already guilty of the most heinous crime possible! SDWW (self-defense while white). He will never beat this rap. Even Holder has said that if there is not a conviction, the (in)Justice Dept will go after Zimmerman on hate crime charges & violation of civil rights.
Zimmerman is already sentenced & in prison for life, make no mistake about it. I would put money on it!

I loved Florida... I have been there may times during my life. I do not live very far away from there. I have friends in Florida... but I will never set foot there again.

Without stand-your-ground, Zimmerman would have to flee. But being on the ground underneath Martin, he had no chance to flee, so stand-your-ground does not apply, it was simple self-defense.
Yep, we have. The media likes to profile their kind of guys, so this guy needs to become all hispanic all the time if he wants to stay out of jail. He IS Hispanic (which helps), but he needs to play it to the hilt.
Let’s cut with the oversimplifications.
Trayvon was loitering in the rain off the sidewalk, near townhomes in a neighborhood that had been burglarized frequently in the recent past. Zimmerman thought he might be high as well.
Zimmerman gave a reasonable response: he called police and tried to keep them abreast of where Trayvon was at.
Trayvon noticed that somebody was watching him. He presumably had no way to know whether it was a “good guy” or a “bad guy”. He hid. A reasonable response.
Zimmerman couldn’t see Trayvon any more. He headed back to his truck. At that point neither Trayvon nor Zimmerman has any reason to pursue things further. The reasonable response would be for both of them to go home, or to make further contact with police regarding what had happened.
Then Trayvon comes around and initiates a conversation with Z by asking why Z is following him - a reasonable action if he wasn’t afraid of Z and wanted to clear up what had just happened. Z responds by asking why Trayvon is in the neighborhood, which is the reason why Z was trying to keep track of him - a reasonable action for somebody who wants to make sure that somebody isn’t “up to no good”.
To that point everything was fine.
The next thing anybody knew, Trayvon was on top of Zimmerman and Zimmerman was screaming for help. By the time the cops arrived Zimmerman had a broken nose and a gash on the back of his head, and Trayvon had a fatal gunshot wound and no injuries.
How would anybody explain those facts if Zimmerman chose to attack/shoot Trayvon out of the blue as they were beginning to ask for an explanation of the other’s behavior?
If the Jury isn’t all black the blacks will riot. This will be an OJ Simpson Jury. If they aren’t black they can be radical liberals from hell. Or Rachel Maddow look alikes.

No... Use this as a political issue to split the blacks and the Hispanics. They both vote liberal.
