Newt Gingrich Issues Statement on Santorums Departure, Tells Mike Huckabee Hell Finally Get to Be 1-on-1 With Romney
Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich was just on the Mike Huckabee Radio show, and commented on Santorum suspending his own presidential campaign just moments ago. On the show, Gingrich discussed finally getting to be 1-on-1′ with Romney, how he will campaign going forward, and a possible debate in North Carolina with the current front-runner.
Below are some highlights from Huckabees interview with Gingrich:
I did not get a heads up in advance. We have been talking for two weeks, and I knew this was a real possibility in his mind. I do know that he had begun to realize that when you are up against all of Wall Street, it is very difficult. The money machine makes it difficult to have a competitive race.
I am not focused on going after Romney; I want to focus on the issues and Barack Obama. I will admit it was a slugging match in Florida; people who like me dont want me down in the gutter. We will see what Governor Romney decides. I am going to focus on the Republican platform and why Obama is a grave threat to this country.
Our folks are making calls to undecideds and those for Rick [Santorum]; we have been talking to someone in North Carolina, and there may be a debate [...] between Romney and me. I would like to have an open dialogue just the two of us, a chat.
Here is the full statement released by Gingrichs press secretary:

The GOP-e and the MSM will work overtime to demoralize the conservative base.
We must stick together and stand shoulder to shoulder.
**
Absolutely. Shoulder to shoulder.
LOOK at our opposition, everyone. They continuously stand that way — completely together, no division.
We, however, act like a dysfunctional family. It’s so sick it actually reminds me of my OWN dysfunctional, hypercritical, disloyal backstabbing family. Can’t rely on anyone to actually pull through for you at any time, so it just all fizzles out and becomes weaker and weaker.
Just STOP. Stick together. It’s the KEY to this. We truly need to be ONE big conservative happy family. NOW.
And the sad thing — what really kills me is ...we OUTNUMBER them all. We COULD do this, if we tried.
I was on the Santorum ping list. Some really awful stuff has been said on virtually every Santorum thread by Gingrich supporters about Santorum — over and over and over again.
I suspect Gingrich supporters can cite similar things being said by a few Santorum supporters. And let's point fingers at myself — I had to publicly apologize a few days ago to CAWW for something I never should have written.
I have said for a very long time that I think both candidates get along with each other a lot better than their supporters.
That's water under the bridge now. Nobody is voting for Lazlo, or Darrell, or Mariner, or SatinDoll, or anyone else. We're deciding whether or not to vote for Gingrich. He's got a history of decades in politics and I think both he and Rick Santorum have a lot better political skills than most of us posting here.
I really, really, really hope we're going to see a Santorum endorsement for Gingrich in the near future. But if that doesn't happen, I can understand there are many good reasons why it may not happen. Santorum is young enough that he is looking for a future career in politics, and I don't think Michelle Bachmann has endorsed anyone yet, perhaps for similar reasons. You don't want to jump onto someone else's campaign unless you're sure it's the right thing to do.
Does any of this sound familiar? Romney sure seems to want to try to buy endorsements from conservatives.

Michele Bachmann labels any talk of Mitt Romney endorsement completely false

The Minnesota congresswoman noted she would be in Washington while Romney was appearing in Eagan, Minn. She also said that while she has had discussions with her formal rivals, she has no immediate plans to endorse any of them.
Let me be absolutely clear - there are absolutely no negotiations between me and the Romney campaign regarding any pending endorsement of Governor Romney, Bachmann said in statement that also labeled the story completely false and called on the Globe to retract it. I continue to speak with all the candidates and plan on uniting behind the presumptive nominee.
... The post also noted endorsing Romney could help Bachmann by earning her an ally to help her pay off her lingering campaign debt.
Reports released yesterday showed Bachmann ended her campaign owing more than $1 million. Nonetheless, she announced last week that she would seek reelection this fall to the US House.
Agree with what you wrote, Lazlo. Some of the trash that was posted on Santurom threads was shameful, IMO.
Rick is out - you can stop the “little ricky” now.
Well said. Santorum is a good man who obviously loves this country and is willing to fight for her. There were lots of reasons for people to support him, and if he’d had the kind of money that Romney had the race may have gone totally differently.
People can say what they will about the polling data, but as one who, like Rick, has lost a child, that tension between being there to fight for your country and being there to hold your child is an unbearable tension. I have nothing but respect for him and his family and ache with them over this whole season. We’ve all lost so much, in so many ways. Sometimes life is just plain ugly, and the politics reveals the ugliness so starkly. It brings me to tears that Rick is leaving this battle to go back to a place of love, nurture, and sacrifice. A glimmer of beauty in the middle of this mess.
I think about Samwise Gamgee in “The Two Towers”, who realized the stories that stuck with you were the ones full of danger and darkness, where the heroes had every chance of turning back but they didn’t because they were holding onto something. When Frodo asked him what they were holding onto, he said that there’s some good in this world, and it’s worth fighting for.
Rick is holding onto his daughter. We’re all holding on for our daughters and sons. We’re holding on for each other, and for justice and freedom. Rick needs to give his daughter a lap to sit on right now. And we need to give him a world where a dad can hold his daughter and believe there’s a future for her. Rick and Newt and I and others know that Jesus gave His life to give Rick’s daughter and mine an eternal future, and our job as long as we’re stuck here in time is to give our lives for each other.
This isn’t a time for gloating or attacking. It’s a time for us to stand shoulder to shoulder, holding onto what we love: life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness, freedom of speech, religion, and association, equal protection, due process, the checks and balances and separation of powers...
I hope you can convince those delegates that the torch Santorum is handing off is the same torch that Gingrich carries, and it’s worth fighting for. Together.
“Some of the trash that was posted on Santurom threads was shameful, IMO.”
And some of them spent way more time bashing Rick than praising Newt.
>> “ Nonetheless, she announced last week that she would seek reelection this fall to the US House.” <<
.
Owned, of course, by the establishment snakes that pay off her debt.
Sad Michele, you could have done so much, had you not gotten so jealous of Sarah Palin.
Please don’t go that route. If we’re going to hold this country together we’re going to need each other. All of us. Scorched earth only leaves scorched earth. And God knows we’ve got enough hucksters on the Obama side trying for scorched earth in this country right now.
Here’s Rush’ guess, and he admits it’s just a “wild guess.”:
“RUSH: As to why Santorum got out, folks, I think it’s pretty obvious. I don’t think he could convince Newt to join forces with him and to take this out to the convention. I don’t think he wanted to do that with Ron Paul. I think he probably just concluded he couldn’t put a coalition together with the people remaining, and that was it. There was just no way forward. That’s my wild guess. Others will expand on this, I’m sure.”

WOW
You can surely say that again.
It’s a NEWT DAY FOR AMERICA!
We need to pray that Newt hangs tough. I mean literally, get on our knees, now, and pray. And send money and canvass neighborhoods. Believe and do. It's not over for Conservatism.
You have your opinion; perfectly fine. But are you averse enough to a Romney Presidency to refuse to let your expectation of Santorum become a foregone conclusion by default? Why not take a moment and tell Santorum that you want his support to go to Newt, and not Romney?
To my mind, this isn't about what I think of Santorum; it's about what I think of Newt and Romney, and since I prefer Newt by a large margin, I think it's a no-brainer to let Santorum's campaign hear my voice as to who I want him to support in Tampa.
I’m gonna vote for Newt now that Santorum has dropped but I can say this, I have a bad feeling Romney is gonna make it to the finals. Not because he is the best but because he is the ugliest.
Think again.
Shucks. Thanks.
I do have an occasional moment. I’d probably change a word or two here and there and do another draft or two, but it’ll do for now.
