MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif. (KABC) -- Eighteen men were arrested as part of a sex sting operation involving a public restroom in Manhattan Beach.

The lifeguard staff at the Marine Avenue headquarters originally noticed vandalism and what was called suspicious activity at the restroom and notified police. Lifeguards also noticed men frequently using and returning to the same bathroom, and some were loitering in the area as well as inside the restroom for long periods of time.

Officers set up surveillance at the restroom. Detectives also began monitoring several websites where discussions of the Marine Avenue bathroom were taking place. Based on the information gathered, investigators concluded that the public restroom was being used as a meeting place for sexual activity.

For those unfamiliar with the vernacular, they are referred to as "glory holes."

These guys don’t look ‘flamboyant’. Let me get this straight; The glory hole is used so the customer doesn’t have to see what they’re ‘getting’, so to speak? I wonder if they have a lot of ‘slip and fall’ lawsuits from that bathroom.

Obama is president here, too. He recently moved into the new White House.

When I was a boy in Nashville TN, my school took us on a field trip to cedar hill park. While there a few of us went to the men's room, and there was this fat old man loitering in there, he asked us if we wanted a BJ, we were about 12 years old at the time, and didn't have a clue, but my instinct told me that something was definitely wrong. So we got out of there. I went and told my teacher that a old man was asking us in the restroom if we wanted BJ’s, (not quite sure what a BJ was at the time) I will never forget my teachers facial expression when I told her what happened

That looks like tape to smooth the edges. How does a customer know there’s not a dude with a machete on the other side? LOL

Because gerbils are not allowed in guest rooms of most hotels, and certainly a large majority of Gujarti-Indians (Patels) at the front desks would object for health and safety reasons.

I don’t get it. Aren’t there gay bars in California?

L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center decries sex-sting coverage

Ed Murrow might not have approved.

Your friends at KPCC weren’t the only ones taken aback at how eagerly certain media outlets, abetted by the Manhattan Beach Police Department, published detailed personal information on the 18 men accused of engaging in consensual-but-illegal sex in a public restroom.

Guilty or not, the men, all of whom had been swept up in a recent sting operation by Manhattan Beach police, were listed in a pdf file by the MBPD, along with date of birth, city of residence and high-res mug shots — which CBS Los Angeles (KCBS and KCAL) then helpfully reposted online in its entirety. Similarly, the hometown Daily Breeze posted small versions of the arrestees’ mug shots but linked to the high-res ones, plus listed their names in a long paragraph — the better to show up in future Google searches.

Reactions to those stories were mixed, judging from reader comments, but in a statement released Wednesday, members of the Los Angeles Gay & Lesbian Center did not mince words in expressing their outrage.

“It’s shocking that any news operation, but especially an affiliate of a major network like CBS, would choose to publish the mug shots, names and birthdates of people charged with victimless crimes, simply because the charges are salacious or related to gay sex,” the group’s chief of staff Darrel Cummings said in the statement.

“Publishing their photos serves no purpose other than to humiliate and destroy their lives. We call on KCBS/KCAL to immediately remove the images and names from their website.”

The group said its members contacted KCBS, and that “Assistant News Director Paul Button ... said he would look into the issue, but he has yet to follow up with the Center.”

Police have the right to release the names of any non-minors they have arrested regardless of the offense, and traditionally have done so. But unlike print and other old-media forms, online media poses a new challenge: On the Internet, stories last forever, making the repercussions permanent for those named.

At least two of the 18 men have denied engaging in lewd acts, and one told the Daily Breeze, “You have completely ruined my life.” An anonymous reader of this blog offered the following comment: “I know one of the guys that was arrested. He just walked in to take a leak and got tackled on the way out.”

Even so, some readers applauded the publishing of detailed information. “I live in Georgia (originally from the South Bay),” commented a Daily Breeze reader. “Out here, they post the name, address and photo of EVERYONE who is arrested and we LOVE IT. If you don’t want your name and photo in the news, don’t get arrested.”

“What is it with queers and public restrooms?”

The reason why it was considered a mental illness until that became politically incorrect is that the number of partners is through the roof, and they deliberately seek out anonymous strangers. That became known when they were trying to trace AIDS transmissions, and the afflicted would try to list their contacts; they’d had sex with numerous total strangers (and AIDS became impossible to trace).

We had one of these freaks as our governor..

As a rookie cop in Ohio in 1973 I got picked to stand on a box looking out a hole in the wall for this crap. I spent 8 hr. shifts smelling urine, shiite and watching this stuff go on. Made 48 arrests in a 30 day period. One was my next door neighbor. He never volunteered to mow my lawn again.

Maybe they should give them a pass. Looking at them it’s hard to believe any of them found someone to have sex with; even each other.

It is an epidemic.

I travel for a living, so rest areas and public bathrooms are required. Between the graffiti arranging hookups, holes in walls, etc, this goes on far more than most people realize.

I have heard the slapping sounds in the handicap stall too many times.

Adult bookstores are another favorite for this crowd with the occasional crossdresser, transvestite or real woman on the other side of the glory hole.

There are websites dedicated to disseminating this information. If you read the posts, you will throw up.

Let me remind all of you that this is unprotected sex acts going on here with multiple, anonymous partners.

I you explore this side of society, you will understand that gay marriage is not about two people who are in love, but mainstreaming a lifestyle that has no regard for fidelity, monogamy nor family.

Something tells me that this was one location advertised in the local homosexual publications as a “hot” spot.
