Road Trip: Fort Jackson, South Carolina

060919-F-1424R-046

Fort Jackson is a United States Army installation, which TRADOC operates on for Basic Combat Training (BCT), and is located in Columbia, South Carolina.

Fort Jackson is the largest and most active Initial Entry Training Center in the U.S. Army, training 34.9 percent of all soldiers and 60 percent of the women entering the Army each year. Providing the Army with new soldiers is the post's primary mission. Accomplishing this mission means training in excess of 45,000 basic training and advanced individual training soldiers annually. The training is provided by the 165th, 171st, and 193rd Infantry Brigades.

Providing the Army with trained, disciplined, motivated and physically fit warriors who espouse the Army's core values and are focused on teamwork Fort Jackson's primary mission.

The fort includes more than 52,000 acres, including more than 100 ranges and field training sites and 1,160 buildings. Soldiers, civilians, retirees and family members make up the Fort Jackson community that continues to grow in numbers and facilities. More than 3,900 active duty Soldiers and their 14,000 family members are assigned to the installation and make this area their home. Fort Jackson employs almost 5,200 civilians and provides services for more than 36,000 retirees and their family members.

The post has other missions as well. Fort Jackson is home to the U.S. Army Soldier Support Institute, the U.S. Army Chaplains Center and School and the Defense Academy for Credibility Assessment (formerly the Department of Defense Polygraph Institute).

The fort will continue to grow in the coming years as a result of the recent Base Realignment and Closure Commission’s decision to make Fort Jackson the home of the Army’s only Drill Sergeant School, the Department of Defense Joint Center of Excellence for Military Chaplaincy and one of four new Regional Readiness Sustainment Commands.

Other expansion and improvement projects have been completed or are in progress. Within the last three years new projects included a Post Exchange complex, an Emergency Services Center and a Navy Reserve Center. A $4.5 million family water park opened in the summer of 2004 and a new barracks complex and central energy plant costing $59 million will open soon.

The mission of the Chaplain Center and School is to train chaplains and chaplain assistants who provide religious support to American soldiers and their family members throughout the world.

The U.S. Army Chaplain School was created out of a need to adequately train chaplains to staff the large military force which the United States was creating in 1917, for service in World War I. The plan for the school was developed by Chaplain (MAJ) Aldred A. Pruden. The Army Chaplain Museum is located at the school.

The mission of The U. S. Army Chaplain Museum is to collect, conserve, and display artifacts of the US Army Chaplaincy's past as the foundation of its future.

Looks like them suckers moved North.

Let the Yankees have ‘em! (lol, I just moved from Los Angeles this year)

Some of them were last seen headed to Oklahoma, which has more tornadoes per square mile than anyplace in the country, averaged over the cycle. I think they'd take offense to being called Yankees. I was stationed there when I was in the Air Force, they served Grits in the cafeteria. :) I also worked there for about 9 months in 2002 on loan to the company's office serving Tinker AFB, the same base I'd been stationed at. I was also up there on a short work visit to Tinker in '99 , right after a Big One cut a wide swath across the south side of the city and metro area. You could see the path from the airplane, from several miles away. It cut the corner of the base, and just missed our office there. Trees not 50 feet from the building had their tops taken off, then the tornado skipped across I-40 and took the top off of the hotel we'd planned to stay in. :) Then it just missed an elementary school.

The first year I was there we had our last tornado WARNING (not watch) after Thanksgiving. The first of the next year was late January. :)

They are very used to tornadoes.

And they can have them.

Down here in central Texas, near Jarrel, there is a very unique rest stop on I-35. There are the usual bathrooms and covered tables outside, but they are tornado shelters as well. Very sturdy concrete buildings. A result of a big nasty tornado which nearly wiped out Jarrel. Unusual down here.

For the record, I wish no destruction on my FRiends north of Texas’ border. Oklahoma (where the wind comes sweepin’ down the plain) is home to many a good Conservative and we pray for our Oklahomans’ weathering this storm — across the board (Conservative and liberal alike).

I am just glad my wife isn’t in harm’s way anymore.

That may be mean of me, but it is how I honestly feel.

"I heard on the radio, I was traveling back from Austin, that a very small twister formed right in The Ballpark in Arlington, just tore up the tarps was all. "

I had heard that as well, and heard someone got it on film

I must apologize at my poor attempt at humor.

Although the Oakies *would* take offense at being called Yankees. And Oakies. :) but since I've got a sister in law and her family in OK city, plus a few friends from when I was stationed up there (and later when I was in the Oklahoma Air National Guard), I can take certain liberties.

When I was stationed there one of the L/C's said "The only thing worse than an Okie is an Arkie". He was from Ft. Smith and was one crazy dude. Navigator type. :)

We are getting some boomers here in Central Texas tonight.. but they aren't Mother Nature's doing. The Army apparently had night firing training scheduled for tonight, storms or no storms. (and I've heard it when it was raining pretty hard) Might be artillery, but I suspect it's tank fire. There's a regular training regime that requires night firing. You don't want to get into a tank battle with Abrams tanks at night.. or in the daytime either, but especially not at night. :) No matter what other type of tank you might have. Ask the Iraqi Republican Guard.

>>I must apologize at my poor attempt at humor.<<

No, it was pretty good humor (which I love). I was just trying to preempt my guilt should the Oakies get hit harder than we were.

All is well my FRiend :)

You have no idea how that warms and keeps a Road Warrior like me.

I know that everywhere I go I can find a FReeper if I am in need — and I am willing to help any FReeper I can. And to know that if I need to reach out to a FReeper near home I can 100% depend on him/her to help Mrs. FD when I am away.

God bless us all!

OK, no more maudlin — we also need to keep each other happy and, when we can, laughing!

So, John Kerry, Sarah Jessica Parker and a horse walk into a bar. The bartender says ...
