Did Rick Santorum really just come within a few micro-seconds of calling America's first ever black president a "******"?
Of course not, comes the rational response. Apart from the fact that it would instantly be a campaign-killing gaffe, it would be in direct opposition to the Santorum image we have seen now for months. This is the man who is almost two goody-two-shoes to be real. He has a large and loving family. He may be ultra-conservative, but he also appears to be the sort of suburban dad who would be more likely to say "Aw, shucks" and "Jeepers creepers" rather than deploy the most offensive word in the English language. He wears sweater vests!
But about that video. What is going on there?
Santorum was speaking at a rally in Janesville, Wisconsin, still locked in the ferocious nomination battle with Mitt Romney and still desperate to become the true conservative standard-bearer of the Republican party.
"We know the candidate Barack Obama, what he was like the anti-war government nig " he seems to say, then suddenly stopping, and changing tack to add: "America was a source for division around the world, that what we were doing was wrong."
It is hard to think of exactly what word Santorum was about to use. What word beginning with "nig-" comes naturally after government? It has been suggested he was trying to say "-nik", as in peacenik or beatnik. That is possible. Or perhaps, it was some non-specific verbal tic: a random vowel-consonent flub.

"We know the candidate Barack Obama, what he was like the anti-war government nig..."
Santorum was contrasting "candidate" Obama to president Obama. It would be senseless to bring Obama's race into it, even if Santorum was predisposed to do so and forgot for an instant he was speaking in public.
Now it the comment had been about something that could be construed as racial I might have a different view such as.
Obama was a politician straight from the Chicago Machine, he attended the church of radical Black Liberation Church. Just another inner city nig...
Then you could make a case for it...
Most of the attacks on Santorum are nothing but old re-runs from the Romney and Ron Paul supporters that are six months old and were addressed six months ago.
Romney is spending millions and millions of dollars destroying not just Santorum, but conservatives, because Romney knows that his state mandate is just as odious to conservatives as the federal mandate.
Since he finished his thought with the word “wrong” any REASONABLE person would jump to the conclusion that he was speaking about Obama’s NEGATIVE policies. I have never heard him use the “N” word EVER. Why would he use it in a heated campaign. I HAVE heard him use the word NEGATVE quite often when referring to Obama. This is pretty sad, especially since it probably came from the Romney/Obama campaign. This kind of stuff makes me so upset. Shame on them. When there is a “war on women” Santorum is against women. Now that there is a “war on race” santorum called Obama the “n” word. Give me a break...do they really think we are THAT stupid?
You know, that might be the first head shot I’ve ever seen of Obama that didn’t have a halo behind it.
@NO_LIMIT_what?
By the way, which side of the Gov. Walker recall did Romney come down on? It seems to me that I heard that Romney was not supporting Walker.
Those British newspapers are always looking out for the best interests of the US. What, is there no news in England?
and zimmerman?
:::::snicker:::::
He meant to say “nagger.”
You must be selective in what information to base your opinion on. This was easy to research....... Blind bias will become a problem for all of us if any of us make ignorant proclamations without the facts. I hope you are not one of them. We cannot afford that any longer.
Wow, how bad is this journalism? Could this be more of a stretch to make up something to smear someone? No.
Who hasn’t mixed up sounds and words, trying to backtrack when they left something out? If anything, he was in the middle of trying to characterize Obama as a “BIG” government president, and left out the word “big.” Tried backtracking, and got the the “n” sound from government mixed in.
Now if you think that’s speculation too, it’s more probable than anything this article tried to hock.
I must say, that I N’-don’t see this as a N’-problem, for N’-Santorum. And N’-either does N’-torum!
It could have been....
Nitwit
Nincompoop
Nasty
Nothing
Non-american
Nits
Nats
Nicaraguan
Ninny
Nerf herder
Ridiculous.
Do you agree that Santorum did this, Responsibility2nd?
I heard “nic”. Maybe it was just a random stray syllable.
My post 32 had a picture, but it got yanked.
