...The candidate admitted to reporters Tuesday that finances are “tight” and, asked if he was willing to spend his own money to stay in the race, Gingrich told Bill O’Reilly. “If necessary, but that’s not the point, we are raising some money.”
...His opening remarks at Salisbury University in Maryland shed light on the candidate’s efforts to change the tone of his campaign.
"I have been trying to wrestle with what I have not been able to communicate,” the former professor told the student audience. “I feel like in a lot of ways in my campaign, I got sucked into normal politics, which is frankly, in large part, a waste of time because it is all negative and it is all baloney and it is all trivial stuff.”
“I ran originally because there were two really large challenges in American politics that I thought needed to be addressed...The first was a question of the core nature of the United States and the second was the role of innovation in meeting challenges and creating a successful 21st Century America.”
Gingrich said that while public recognition of core American values has clearly increased, the government sector has failed to modernize and encourage innovation. Gingrich said he envisioned an “America so dynamic, so prosperous, so filled with people out doing exciting things that we would pull away from the Chinese just as decisively as 40 or 50 years ago we pulled away from the Russians.”
“There is no reason for this country to have any significant problems. They are almost all an artifact of a really bad governing structure and a really incompetent bureaucratic system,” Gingrich said, revisiting his proposals to overhaul the government in ways that would promote innovation in domestic energy production, space travel, brain science research, and social security reform...

As convention nears, balance security and free speech "This summer's Republican National Convention will put Tampa in the spotlight like never before. And that attention brings an added responsibility on the city to protect the civil liberties of protesters and the public even amid unprecedented security. The city needs to be thoughtful and accommodating as it looks to change local laws that govern when and how demonstrators and other groups may gather.
Many security arrangements will be dictated by the U.S. Secret Service, including the broader restrictions in and around the main activity areas at the Tampa Bay Times Forum and the Tampa Convention Center. But the city still has its own area of authority and an obligation to make its views known when security concerns begin to infringe on the public's right to assemble and express protected speech.
Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn's administration has spent several months looking at ways to relax the permitting code to make it easier for large groups to gather without breaking the law.....
...The existing codes make some exceptions for public protests, but those guarantees are few and too much discretion is left to top city officials. That is a recipe for abuse and for costly legal battles. The city should at the least focus on loosening the most onerous rules, such as those requiring long lead times for protesters to apply for permits. Others, such as those requiring multimillion-dollar insurance guarantees and hefty up-front costs for security, cleanup and other incidentals, need to be modified to reflect the fluid nature of accommodating the public at what will already be a high-security event. The goal should be to balance free speech and security. That will require common sense in drafting the new permitting codes.".....

....."Let's look at a couple of plausible scenarios:
Scenario One: Florida and Arizona's delegates become free agents
Florida and Arizona were penalized half their delegates for jumping to the front of the primary calendar. But both were winner-take-all states, even though Republican rules clearly stated that early primaries had to allocate delegates proportionately. If the anti-Romney forces brought a challenge to the floor, there is nothing that would require anyone—bound, pledged or "morally bound"—to vote with the Romney forces. A loss here would mean that at least 30 of the 79 total delegates from Florida and Arizona could vanish from Romney's column.
Scenario Two: All candidates become free agents
Suppose the challenge to Romney is broader, and that, like the Kennedy forces did in 1980, the opposition offers a rule to free all the delegates from their commitments on the ground that the primaries have demonstrated Romney's weakness. Here, we could see a number of delegates bound to Romney vote to liberate themselves from the obligation to vote for him. (Again, we should note that delegates bound to vote for Romney as the nominee don't have to side with him on other votes that stand to determine his fate.) Sure, most delegates would probably stand by the former governor on grounds of loyalty, fairness or fear of reprisals. But if Romney has not garnered a large enough share of delegates by convention time, it would not take many defections to make every delegate a free agent, and thus turn the whole convention upside down."
Scenario Three: Wild card
Imagine a platform plank that repudiated health care individual mandates "at the national or state level," a clear stick in Romney's eye (and, I suspect, a sentiment the majority of delegates would embrace). Or imagine a proposal that the candidates participate in a debate in front of the convention before the balloting begins. Or suppose Romney prevails, but his foes contest his vice-presidential selection. There are countless other ways for a convention to turn contentious.".....

Santorum and Romney are scared of Gingrich, and they have a lot to gain by keeping him silent and out of the limelight.
I’m glad Gingrich is changing his campaign manager. I think his strategy hasn’t been as efficient as it could have been. My brief contact with the campaign in the Florida primary made me wonder about it. We spent most of our phone time collecting data rather than telling people to get out to the polls (which is the only thing that wins an election).
I realize that this may help in the long term, but only if you can make sure your candidate is front and center to begin with. And while it may sound silly, the campaign had almost no yard signs or anything else. When I went to vote, the school where I vote was literally surrounded by Romney signs (with a few for Paul and Santorum, but none for Newt), and unfortunately many voters are probably influenced by that.

Think of it. A contested convention is itself the ultimate exercise of the public’s right to freedom of assembly and free speech. Yet, according to the post, the city government id trying to make it easier for large groups to gather to disrupt the peacable assembly and speech of the delegated representatives of the people of the entire nation?
