Sen. DeMint urges Republicans to unite behind Romney
Miami Herald ^ | 03.22.12 | JAMES ROSEN

Posted on 03/22/2012 4:24:14 PM PDT by throwback

WASHINGTON -- Jim DeMint, among the nation's conservative leaders, stopped just short Thursday of endorsing Mitt Romney for president as the South Carolina senator called on the former Massachusetts governor's foes to re-evaluate their campaigns. DeMint's appeal for Republicans to focus on defeating President Barack Obama came a day after former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, another influential conservative, endorsed Romney and urged party unity. "What I can tell conservatives from my perspective is that I'm not only comfortable with Romney, I'm excited about the possibility of him possibly becoming our nominee," DeMint told reporters on Capitol Hill. At a time when a Romney staffer's "Etch A Sketch" gaffe is once again raising questions about Romney's conservative bona fides among the most stalwart Republicans, DeMint's vote of confidence could help the candidate solidify support among the party's base. "His leadership skills, the fact that he hasn't lived his life in Washington - there's a lot to like there," DeMint said. DeMint said he had no "immediate plans to do an endorsement," but without naming them, he urged former Sen. Rick Santorum, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Rep. Ron Paul to re-evaluate their campaigns. "I think we all need to look at this presidential primary and encourage the candidates to do a little self-reflection here - what's good for the country," DeMint said. "The sooner we can make a decision, I think the sooner we can focus on the real problem, which is Obama," he said. DeMint made it clear that he views a possible brokered presidential convention this summer as harmful for Republicans' chances of making Obama a one-term president.

According to Gallup, the percentage is 18%, not 10%.

I almost, in my post, commented that I felt this number was under-estimated! The best estimate for today probably is much closer to 18% than 10%. But keep in mind, anywhere from 3% to 5% (when push comes to shove) will prove themselves to be "good little republicans" and vote for Romney. Or maybe Romney will make a brilliant VP pick, ala McCain, and gain an extra percent or two. It won't matter though. Even at 10% of the population voting 3rd party or staying home, Romney loses. The difference between Bush/Kerry and Cain/Obama was less.

Yeah - if we don’t get our nominee let’s all sit out so we can have 4 more years of Obama, and screw our retirement 401s and our kids and grandkids lives.

It just isn’t worth trying to do the right thing if we can’t get our way is it ?

Seriously ?

Society doesn’t make changes in jumps it is all about direction. (If it did make changes in jumps, Obama would have us driving Volts and oil would be gone.)

Anybody other than Obama will move the needle to the right, particularly if we get a congress that is to the right.

No. I will not. Not yet.

I will not, EVER. It will not happen. I know too much about Romney and his ilk.

Romney will lose one way or the other. He’s a complete phoney.

I do not want him near the Whitehouse where he can have an opportunity to diffuse the TP and make targets of conservatives.

No, the better opportunity in 2012 is to get control of the Senate with strong influence from the TP and to add TP seats to the House, then stop Obama cold and use the 2014 election to erase the last vestiges of the GOP-Elite.

Back a few months ago, when DeMint spoke glowingly of Rombama, I not only "unsubscribed" from DeMint's Senate "Conservatives" fund, I also called. One of his staff actually called back and left a message that DeMint had not yet endorsed Rombama, or anyone. I knew it was just a matter of time before his actual endorsement came out.

Read this on another site - this took place today, I believe:

Following their one-on-one meeting, DeMint and Romney were joined by tea-party-inspired stalwarts, according to sources, including Sen. Kelly Ayotte (N.H.), who previously endorsed the governor; Senate Republican Policy Committee Chairman John Barrasso (Wyo.); Sen. Ron Johnson (Wis.); Sen. Mike Lee (Utah); and GOP Reps. Jim Jordan (Ohio), Steve King (Iowa) and Joe Pitts (Pa.); and Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli.

Makes me sick.

The 3rd party option will be the same waste of a vote it always is.

It's not a waste if I enjoy it! If Obama loses, I'm happy. If Romney loses, I'm happy. If they both lose I'm doubly happy.

I really don’t understand this. DeMint endorsed Romney in 2008, so there’s nothing new about this. Why are some Freepers surprised?

Democratic activists comments....I visited some of their sites...they want Romney too...or Santorum...and they are switching sides to make that happen...Following quotes:

Democrate Quote.....”We need Romney to be the GOP nominee, as that will depress the teabagger turnout, which is especially helpful in Congressional races as well.”

and another here ....”Finally, negotiations are being made to pave the way for Ron Paul to run as a 3rd Party candidate, which will ensure an Obama win without need of deflecting vote fraud and other GOP tricks.”

also here....”I hope they vote for santorum.... lets keep the repuke infighting going as long as possible. its very entertaining, hehe.”

and again here.....”In Michigan...or others...If the law of your state allows you to vote in the Republican primary, vote Santorum.”

True enough. If you are really indifferent as to who is elected president then it doesn't really matter. A 3rd party isn't going to win through. It's still going to be either Obama or Romney.

16 Reasons Why Mitt Romney Would Be A Really, Really Bad President

Teacher to college class: "After reading this list who still wants to vote for Romney?"

#1 Romneycare was what Obamacare was based on

#2 During his time as governor of Massachusetts, Mitt Romney significantly raised taxes.

#3 Government spending in Massachusetts increased significantly under Mitt Romney.

#4 It turns out that Mitt Romney is a believer in the theory of man-made global warming.

#5 If Mitt Romney becomes president, we may actually have "cap and trade" shoved down our throats.

#6 Mitt Romney had a horrible record of creating jobs while governor of Massachusetts.

#7 Mitt Romney was a very enthusiastic supporter of the Wall Street bailouts.

#8 If Romney becomes president, get ready for a flood of liberal judges.

#9 Mitt Romney is incredibly soft on illegal immigration.

#10 While he was governor, Mitt Romney received advice on global warming and carbon emissions from the man who is now the top science adviser to Barack Obama.  John P. Holdren, has some very, very disturbing ideas: he once wrote the following....

#11 Mitt Romney has been a huge supporter of gun control laws.

#12 Mitt Romney once claimed that he was more "pro-choice" than Ted Kennedy, but now he claims that he is pro-life.

#13 During this campaign season, Mitt Romney has stated that he only supports partnership agreements for gay couples and not gay marriage,

#14 As late as 2007, Mitt Romney was a member of the Republican Main Street Partnership.  The following is what romneyexposed.com says about this organization....

#15 According to the Huffington Post, Mitt Romney has raised more money from lobbyists than all of the other Republican candidates combined.

#16 Mitt Romney is a big time Wall Street insider.  It is estimated that Romney has a personal fortune of approximately a quarter of a billion dollars, and Wall Street money is being absolutely showered on his campaign.

And then there is this -- Romney is a member of a non-Christian cult, Mormonism:

Cults, Movements, World Religions
Sects and Satanic Cults

That ain't being Breitbart. I will be in that bunker, and if you're not in that bunker 'cause you're not satisfied with this candidate, more than shame on you. You're on the other side.

That attitude is why we keep getting more and more liberal “republican” candidates for nominees. And that is exactly what Romney is counting on. You are playing into his hand.

Principles trump party. The GOP can go Suck eggs. And I’m not staying home election night, I will vote down ticket and write in a Conservative for POTUS. I will not vote for Romney or Obama. My faith and my conservative principles forbid it.

The GOP can go to Hell.
