Sen. DeMint urges Republicans to unite behind Romney
Miami Herald ^ | 03.22.12 | JAMES ROSEN

Posted on 03/22/2012 4:24:14 PM PDT by throwback

WASHINGTON -- Jim DeMint, among the nation's conservative leaders, stopped just short Thursday of endorsing Mitt Romney for president as the South Carolina senator called on the former Massachusetts governor's foes to re-evaluate their campaigns. DeMint's appeal for Republicans to focus on defeating President Barack Obama came a day after former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, another influential conservative, endorsed Romney and urged party unity. "What I can tell conservatives from my perspective is that I'm not only comfortable with Romney, I'm excited about the possibility of him possibly becoming our nominee," DeMint told reporters on Capitol Hill. At a time when a Romney staffer's "Etch A Sketch" gaffe is once again raising questions about Romney's conservative bona fides among the most stalwart Republicans, DeMint's vote of confidence could help the candidate solidify support among the party's base. "His leadership skills, the fact that he hasn't lived his life in Washington - there's a lot to like there," DeMint said. DeMint said he had no "immediate plans to do an endorsement," but without naming them, he urged former Sen. Rick Santorum, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Rep. Ron Paul to re-evaluate their campaigns. "I think we all need to look at this presidential primary and encourage the candidates to do a little self-reflection here - what's good for the country," DeMint said. "The sooner we can make a decision, I think the sooner we can focus on the real problem, which is Obama," he said. DeMint made it clear that he views a possible brokered presidential convention this summer as harmful for Republicans' chances of making Obama a one-term president.

They trot out DeMint to sell this, as none of them have credibility anymore with conservatives.

Soon they will persuade people like Rush, Sarah and some others to come and pitch this to conservatives. Otherwise all their plans will be down the toilet. They will probably offer these salespeople, some crumbs for their efforts.

Just caught your "be Breitbart" tag. Mine is a breitbart quote too.

I don't care who our candidate is. I haven't since the beginning of this... ask not what the candidate can do for you, ask what you can do for the candidate! [snip]... I will march behind who ever our candidate is. Because if we don't, we lose.

There are two paths! There are two paths! One is America, the other is Occupy! One is America, the other is Occupy! And I don't care, and along the way... I've realized over the last three years that the Republican Party and the conservative movement is not what ABC, CBS and NBC put on the screen.

They try to portray you in the worst possible light... and when I travel around the United States meeting people in the Tea Party who care -- black, white, gay, straight -- anyone that's willing to stand next to me to fight the progressive left, I will be in that bunker, and if you're not in that bunker 'cause you're not satisfied with this candidate, more than shame on you. You're on the other side." - Andrew Breitbart CPAC 2012 You should change your tag to "I'm on the other side," or "pro-Occupy," or "rat...it's the new conservatism."

I want to see who the third-party option might be.

At this point, that's also what I am waiting for.

Not going to happen. It's already been predicted as much as 10% of the republican base will stay home or vote 3rd party should Romney become the nominee. I am part of that statistic as are fare number of my associates. Romney is the *the only* candidate that could lose to Obama. Santorum, Gingrich, and Paul would *all* mop the floor with Obama because a large distinction, a divisive gap, exists between their ideology and Obama's. The gap between Obama's and Romney's ideology is very narrow. Those who refuse to vote for Obama's ideology will refuse to vote for Romney's ideology. And it may mean Obama wins, assuming the GOP-e are not smart enough to figure this out for themselves.

The 3rd party option will be the same waste of a vote it always is. Like it or not, we have a 2 party system due to no ability to build governing coalitions. Most of the time you will be stuck voting for the lesser of 2 evils in national elections. It is only once in a lifetime for most of us that a Reagan comes along (and to the moderates of the party he was considered too extreme and not their ideal candidate). Our real choices are fought out in primaries and, unfortunately, there just wasn't any really compelling conservative candidate this time around which has allowed the always milquetoast and cautious establishment's candidate to dominate. I support Newt and hope he stays in till the end, but I'm under no illusion as to what the ultimate outcome is likely to be.

I will never vote for Romney and will not contribute to anyone you endorse in future. You should be ashamed for enforcing the author of RomneyCare, a RINO.

Our Founders would be proud of you. Politicians for the most part are absolute scum of the Earth. NONE of them should be put on a pedestal.

If a total collapse occurs, I pray that not one politician in American will be seen again -- they are all enemies of Liberty and enemies of our Constitution.

I very much look forward to not casting a vote for President on election day.

Screw demint and ALL the GOP-e sycophants.

A message to all those who will vote for mitt as a last resort. The GOP-e expects that exact reaction. If the GOP-e KNEW we would never accept such RINOs they would not shove them down our throats.

So, in a way, those who will vote for mitt as a last resort are partially the reason we may indeed have mitt.     mitt will NEVER get my vote.

During the Civil War cutting and running was called “seeing the elephant”. I say hold steady people this thing ain’t over, even if the RINO’s are all running away from a fight.

A little off topic, but this reminds me of the time when I was Director of Corporate Sales for a manufacturer. The largest customer was very upset with our poor delivery at the time.

The President of the company came into my office and gave me this spiel he wanted me to give the customer. I asked if it was true and he replied that is was not.

"Why are you asking me to repeat something that is not true?" I asked.

"Well, you're the only one here they believe," he responded.

"How long do you think they will continue to trust me?" I asked. I got a blank stare.

I refused.

I left the company within a few months.

Dear Senator DeMint,

I have absolutely no use for your recommendation. Not only will I not support Mitt Romney before the Republican convention; I will not support him after the convention either. He is a social liberal. He is my enemy. And quit trying to tell me that the cesspool at the bottom of the slippery slope doesn’t really smell all that bad.

Signed,

Seems to me that Mitt should have spent more time winning over conservatives than winning Obama strongholds.

You got that right. Credibility and trust is developed over time with a lot of hard work. You can lose it very fast also, and once gone, it is very hard to win back. Nowadays, few in the business world (and elsewhere) truly see that value of this.

I hope conservative leaders see that political capital is earned and should not be misused to help scoundrels.

DeMint can pound it up his keester.

“Pick a conservative and I’ll support him.”

That’s my answer.

DeMint can go suck eggs as far as I’m concerned. There will be no uniting behind Romney for this conservative.
