I was standing in the checkout line yesterday at my local supermarket when I saw a very nude, very pregnant Jessica Simpson staring at me from the cover of the April issue of Elle magazine.
She should be ashamed of herself.
The 31-year-old songstress, actress and fashion designer is celebrating her impending motherhood for the whole world to see. But it is no cause for celebration when a baby is born out of wedlock even to a rich and famous mom like Simpson.
Thats not to suggest that Simpson should be punished with an Old Testament stoning (or be chastised according to Sharia law). And its absolutely not to suggest that the life of her soon-to-be-born baby daughter is anything but precious.
But Simpson knows, from her Southern Baptist upbringing, that its morally wrong to bring a baby into the world outside of marriage. Yet she is totally unrepentant, as evidenced by her all-too-brazen cover shoot.
The former gospel singer may tell herself that the fact she is engaged reportedly to her babys daddy makes her unwed motherhood okay. She may think that the fact she didnt abort her pre-born child makes her a GCB Good Christian Baby-maker.
Well, maybe so in the view of those who worship at the altar of moral relativism, but not in the eyes of her Creator. His word says, Marriage is honorable among all but fornicators and adulterers God will judge.
Simpson needs to acknowledge that, like it or not, she is a role model.
Millions of young women first fell in love with her when she co-starred with then-husband Nick Lachey on Newlyweds, an MTV reality show. They downloaded Simpsons three gold and two multi-platinum albums on their Ipods. They bought her hair and beauty products, her shoes and handbags. They look up to her.
And at least some of Simpsons girl fans will think that, if Jessica can proudly drop a baby out of wedlock, they, too, can make such a lifestyle choice.
Simpson will protest that she is not a role model; that she has never encouraged her impressionable fans to emulate her. But the once-wholesome Christian girl next door is no doubt familiar with the scripture that advises: For everyone to whom much is given, from him (or her) much will be required.
Thats not to condemn mom-to-be Simpson, but to pray that she has a moment of conviction. To hope that she recognizes how unseemly it is for her to so brazenly celebrate her unwed motherhood.
“Shame” presupposes the profession of some set of values that deprecates failure to achieve them and celebrates their attainment. No such values exist in Hollywood, so shame is a concept foreign to its citizens.
She should be ashamed because the cover picture of a naked pregnant movie start is such a cliche.
I think we need to see the evidence
I teach at a medical vocational school (for high school grads), and I can attest that almost 1/4 if not 1/2 of my students have had illegitimate children, and, more than likely, they're "engaged to a man who doesnt even love her enough to marry her.
Simpson had a fine husband whom she tossed out for no reason at all. Her life has been a sleazy mess ever since.
Not guilty!!
The best thing to do in today’s world, as a Christian, is to ignore and keep away from the immoral world of celebrity. Television, movies, and all that is associated with the cult of personality is anathema to the Christian and should be avoided. An occasional television program that edifies the viewer is fine, but the moral sewer that is glorified in today’s reality television and general programming does harm to the walk of the Christian in the world. Celebrities, despite their pandering to “values”, primarily worship themselves- they cannot help it. They are celebrities which means they are idolized by millions and are used to an entourage of people salivating at their heels. That kind of lifestyle , one that is egocentric to the extreme, is very damaging. My advice is to read books on the interesting lives of missionaries instead of worrying what immoral people like Jessica Simpson are doing.
My mother use to call women like this, SLUTS.
Yeah -- desperately trying to hold onto her fame now that everyone has moved on to the next cute young thing.
The writer sounds like a typical ‘busybody’ that needs to mind their own damn business. They’d be relieved to not carry around the burdens of worrying about what Jessica Simpson is doing....
Mine too and if she were alive I couldn’t argue with her except by citing the “all humans make mistakes” thingy.
She desperately wants to be accepted. She’ll do anything she can to keep her face in the limelight. I remember that John Mayer described her as “sexual napalm”. That pretty much sums up her motivation driven by the Daddy issues she got from her papa Joe.
TTIWWP..............
Yeah... Why not... ;-)
Of course she should be ashamed.
However, the concepts of shame and sin, once the bedrock of civilized Christianity, are no longer even considerations.
We can thank the tidal wave of nonjudgmental, moral equivalence wrought by the Leftist counterculture starting in the 1960s, for our current residence in an abject moral sewer.
I just don’t wanna waste the gas to drive to Wal-Mart..........
Call me old fashioned, but I don’t see the attractiveness of a nude pregnant woman. I tnink pregnant women in public should wear the clothes designed for them.
It’s a copy of Demi Moore’s Vanity Fair cover, done for publicity.
