Chris Matthews predicts Romney-Portman
Washington Examiner ^ | Wed, 2012-03-21 | Paul Bedard

Posted on 03/21/2012 11:44:42 AM PDT by presidio9

Talk of a Mitt Romney-Rob Portman GOP presidential ticket, a leading pick among Republican insiders, picked up a flashy endorsement Wednesday from long-time political pundit and MSNBC Hardball host Chris Matthews. “Portman’s probably the best bet,” Matthews told the American Bankers Association convention of the Ohio senator.

The former Carter speechwriter and top aide to legendary House Speaker Thomas P. “Tip” O’Neill, suggested that the second best pick for Romney would be Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell. “I think he’s looking at Virginia and Ohio” as states Romney must carry to beat President Obama, added Matthews. It's an assessment GOP officials agree with, seeing Portman strong on conservative and fiscal issues and without social policy baggage.

As for Tea Party favorite, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, Matthews said the GOP should wait. “He’s the future, he’s not now,” said Matthews, who suggested that former President George H.W. Bush picked Dan Quayle as his veep before the former Indiana senator was ready for prime time.

In the general election, Matthews said President Obama is no shoo-in. He figured that Romney’s base of support will be the 47 percent Sen John McCain, R-Ariz., won in 2008. “So he has to get back half of that 6 percent difference and it’s not too hard,” he said, snickering that he’s not heard any McCain voters say they are likely to vote for Obama.

And on Election Day, he said margin of victory will be among voters who make up their mind at the last minute about whether the president “is the best bet for the next four years,” a decision that will be impacted, he added,

Mitt Romney/Rob Portman - the very definition of excitement; the political equivalent of Liberace teamed up with James Brown. I feel good....

Romney has to flip 95 Electoral Votes

Ohio 18
Florida 29
Virginia 13
N.Carolina 15
Indiana 11
Colorado 9
Nevada 6
New Hampshire 4
Nebraska-Obama got 1

He clearly will win all the states McCain won. I don’t think Obama will win N.C and Indiana again. I highly doubt Obama wins Florida.

So that would leave 40 needed. Ohio as a must flip, VA a must flip, then he has to get 9 more.

So when you look at it that way, Portman might bring you Ohio, he won’t wind up on TMZ, and he doubles down on the Economy and could work on the base.

Not a bad theory, even if he isn’t exciting....might be just as well that he isn’t.

What a guy that Chrissie. Always looking out for the GOP.

if Romney gets the nod, as he is likely to do, he had damn well better pick a running mate that gives at least a little respect and acknowledgement to conservative/Tea Party folk. If he doesn’t, it will shave points off his vote total. If he doesn’t, he may well get elected, but he will make a third party for conservatives viable for the next election, and I will be a card-carrying member.

The republican elites have taken my money and told me to go to hell too many times. They will get none of my money during this election. If I give, and I probably will, it will be directly to the nominee or a 504(c) [or whatever section that is] that will represent my voice in the media during the election cycle.

You choose Romney and we loose our country. This is a set up unless we vote to keep this yahoo out. He is on Obama’s team and is buying the race.

Well, if he wins the nomination, Portman only helps him in Ohio.

The Virginia Governor only helps him in VA.

He will need more than that.

I think it will be Rubio because he gets a lot of help with the base (which he sorely needs) and he gets help with Latinos and with Florida. Three in one.

If he wins the nomination and the election, I’d love to see him put together a cabinet something like what follows:

Gingrich - Secretary of State
Paul - Secretary of the Treasury
Santorum - Secretary of Defense
Sen. Inhofe - Attorney General
Rick Perry - Secretary of the Interior
Sen. Crapo - Secretary of Agriculture
Cain - Secretary of Commerce
Joe Wurzelbacher - Secretary of Labor
Laura Ingrham - Health and Human Services
Alveda King - Urban Development
Rep. King - Secretary of Transportation
Gen. Petraeus - Secretary of Veteran’s Affairs
Bachman - Homeland Security
Huntsman - UN Ambassador
Rep. West - National Security Advisor

If you don’t see energy and education in there...well, hehehe...buh bye!

Still trying to figure out what makes Natalie Portman “a great actress?” Was it the scene she filmed masturbating with her mother in the room?”

Fantastic in the Professional. Best kid role since Jodie Foster. Sorry you hated Black Swan, but it WAS about a mentally disturbed girl. And she was perfect. Deserved an Oscar. My opinion.

This Buckeye says no to Portman. Complete lightweight, can you say Quayle?

A conservative governor (like Jindal)? A very serious conservative policy heavyweight (like Rand Paul)?

Gravitas, we need gravitas, felice gravitas....

Actually, Dan Quayle, like Sarah Palin, had a great big liberal-leftist target painted on his back from the start. Any slightest mistake or misspeak was programmed to be pounced upon and twisted by SNL and the Murphy Brown fans. - Truth is, Dan Quayle stood virtually alone and saved the Patriot Missile Program. That took foresight and saved lives. I doubt the Israelis who ducked into basements with gas masks while Saddam Hussein’s Scud missiles were lobbed in over their heads would call Dan Quayle a lightweight.

I suspect Romney will probably pick Huntsman. Huntsman’s a catchy name and sounds country club like the establishment likes.

Gingrich - Secretary of State

I am a Gigrich fan, and will probably still vote for him if he remains on the ballot in NY. That being said, if I were president, I wouldn't want him anywhere NEAR my cabinet.

Rudy Giuliani will make an excellent AG.

If he wins the nomination, I don’t think he or the GOP E gave a hoot what the rest of us think about the running mate. We are doomed.

She's unquestionably a beautiful woman, but she's a little too liberal for me.

Whether the perception is real or not its there. I named name of men who would never be considered lightweight.

I doubt that Portman could himself get elected dog catcher in SW Ohio. He is the prototypical Ohio US Senator, a middle of the road, go a long to get along, well connected politician. Can you name a recent US Senator from Ohio that you would like as a conservative candidate?

Rob who?

Exactly.

He was in the house from '93-05. He was US Trade Rep from 05-06, OMB director in 06-07. Starting in 2011, he's been the Junior Senator from Ohio

Sounds like he'd be a barn burner of a choice. /s
