Newt Gingrich said Tuesday night that phase one for himself and Rick Santorum in the days ahead must be stopping Mitt Romney from getting enough delegates to claim the Republican presidential nomination.
Having skipped campaigning in Illinois and faced with mounting campaign debts, Mr. Gingrich said on Fox News that he was staying in the race because he believes voters would choose him as the nominee after rejecting Mr. Romney.
If Mr. Romney fails to get the 1,144 delegates he needs to wrap up the nomination, Mr. Gingrich said that then well have a real conversation about who can best beat Barack Obama.
Mr. Gingrich said that he believes voters would turn to him as the best person to debate Mr. Obama in the fall. He said his repeated discussion about the need to produce more energy in the United States was putting Mr. Obama on the defensive.
If the key is who can stand here and take him on head to head, I think Im proving it every day, Mr. Gingrich said. He is losing this argument over expensive gasoline.

Me and the little one are in, til Newt's out.
Go Newt!!!
Newt is only staying in until he splits the conservative vote enough to eliminate Santorum and get Romney the nomination.
Newt might as well be a Romney shill—oh, wait, I guess he is.
Sickening.
OMG, Newt is delusional. He is the only candidate who fails to beat obama in the polls. (besides Paul - and I don’t count him).
If polls are so accurate, why do we bother with elections?
I'm still hoping for a brokered convention and a new candidate. I can dream can't I?
“Newt Gingrich said Tuesday night that phase one for himself and Rick Santorum in the days ahead must be stopping Mitt Romney from getting enough delegates to claim the Republican presidential nomination.”
Sounds like the only plan left. If the non-Romneys stay in and keep Romney one being able to get a first round win. Then things could get interesting.
However, although I support Newt, I’m not sure he is the one that would benefit from a “brokered” convention. We might see others about as bad as Romney get the pick...like Christy.
Social conservatives have pretty much fallen behind Santorum....so that significant group will push for him to at least get a VP nod. I don’t no who the ticket leader will be....except that I don’t think Romney will win. He is just not liked and the king of “ho hum.”
Oops, forgot. Uncle Shelley, send money. Thx.
That's my take on it too. Newt's ego far exceeds his popularity based on the votes. He's deluding himself into thinking he will be drafted at a brokered convention
Yeah right... you get that straight from the Lil’ Martian connected at the hip to Mitt?
Glad to know someone is trying to get the party back to conservatism and liberty vs. having a Romneycare candidate to be the leader of the party. If Romney is the face of the party, I am out of this party. I will not be supporting a party who has a man that set a socialized program into state law then the federal government copied the very law only in expansion. No way, no how. To the ABO voters, knock yourself out getting people to support Romneycare. Go, Newt. There is nothing else now that matters other than cleaning out the rinos and giving us back our voices. Keep going, Newt to the end, in principle because the message is the right one.
“OMG, Newt is delusional. He is the only candidate who fails to beat obama in the polls.”
I want a brokered convention and let it all settle there.
ROCK ON NEWT... ROCK ON!
I think Newt is staying in for the same reason Paul is. The attention. He drops out, that ends his invites to FOX News shows, and he goes in the way as Perry, Bachman, and Cain.
Newt will make the best president out of the 4 remaining. So he needs to stay in and win a few states coming up.
We have to stop Romney from getting to 1,144. Period. If he doesn’t get 1,144 by the time everyone gets to Tampa, it’s a whole new ballgame.
That means donating to Rick, Newt, and even Ron.
Newt, meet handwriting on wall.
It`s over, You had a good run for a short while, but it isn`t happening this time around. Throw yourself behind Santorum and slow down Romney that way.
Actually it was Santorum (not Newt) who endorsed Mitt Romney during (not a general election but) a republican primary.
Nuff Said
