Wendy's overtakes Burger King as No. 2 U.S. burger chain

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Wendy's is taking a bite out of Burger King in the fast food business.

Dave Thomas's restaurants became the No. 2-selling hamburger chain in the country last year, industry research firm Technomic said Monday, pushing Burger King back to the No. 3 spot. Burger King had been No. 2 spot since at least 1972, the earliest year for which Technomic has data.

Wendy's (WEN) U.S. sales totaled $8.5 billion last year, edging out Burger King and its $8.4 billion. Wendy's has roughly 5,900 locations in the U.S. compared with Burger King's 7,200.

McDonald's (MCD, Fortune 500), meanwhile, dwarfed both with over $34 billion in sales last year at its 14,098 U.S. locations. It's the largest restaurant chain in the country, followed by Subway, Starbucks (SBUX, Fortune 500), Wendy's and Burger King. (McDonald's phasing out tiny cages for pigs)

Five Guys Burgers and Fries ranked as the fastest-growing chain in the U.S. last year, Technomic said, followed by Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG) and Jimmy John's Gourmet Sandwich Shop.

3 rolled tacos with guac, cheese and hot sauce as well as hot pickled jalapenos, onions and carrots used to be like a dollar!

The only decent BK I have had in the last 25 years was in Puerto Rico.

Great Spanish coffee and croissant egg and cheese breakfast sandwich.

BK here in the states sucks, actually got a burger once that was still half frozen.

They have a lot of variety on their menu, and I LOVE the Sourdough Jack.

It's good! Love those tomatoes on it; they make it juicy.

I hadn't patronized the local Jack in the Box for a while because former management apparently wasn't teaching the crew basic food handling sanitation -- I got sick twice eating there. New management now, better crew apparently, so no food poisoning recently.

Dang, JEFF, you KNOW it. The one place in LA where you could go to eat and a Rolls would be parked next to a POS! Tommy’s was ‘neutral territory.’

As I recall, (old) Wendy’s did a leveraged buyout of Arby’s then sold off Wendy’s. So Wendy’s is under new ownership.

“DON’T YOU FOLKS EVER QUESTION WHY You are eating this crud?”

Usually know the answer before eating, and that’s ‘cause I’m hungry.

Locally we have Farmer Boys Restaurants. It’s a fast food chain limited to this area of Southern California. It’s the only fast food restaurant we bother with anymore.

Even if we go to Harbor City for service of the cars on the annual occasion we will not eat anything until we are back into the Anaheim/Yorba Linda area where we find the first of the Farmer Boy Restaurants on Las Palmas East past Imperial Hwy. as we drive in from the Harbor City/San Pedro area off the 91.

We be picky, and choose to eat mostly at home what we cook.

It probably depends on what kind of fish and how it is cooked. Rubio’s fish tacos taste great. I don’t know if that is the case with other fast-food places’ fish tacos.

They used to be grilled. Remember those days?

Five Guys still grills them the old fashioned way while you watch.

Most overrated burger joint on the planet...

Lived in Cali for a year, and while they seem to think this place is amazing, found it nothing special at all.
