NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Wendy's is taking a bite out of Burger King in the fast food business.
Dave Thomas's restaurants became the No. 2-selling hamburger chain in the country last year, industry research firm Technomic said Monday, pushing Burger King back to the No. 3 spot. Burger King had been No. 2 spot since at least 1972, the earliest year for which Technomic has data.
Wendy's (WEN) U.S. sales totaled $8.5 billion last year, edging out Burger King and its $8.4 billion. Wendy's has roughly 5,900 locations in the U.S. compared with Burger King's 7,200.
McDonald's (MCD, Fortune 500), meanwhile, dwarfed both with over $34 billion in sales last year at its 14,098 U.S. locations. It's the largest restaurant chain in the country, followed by Subway, Starbucks (SBUX, Fortune 500), Wendy's and Burger King. (McDonald's phasing out tiny cages for pigs)
Five Guys Burgers and Fries ranked as the fastest-growing chain in the U.S. last year, Technomic said, followed by Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG) and Jimmy John's Gourmet Sandwich Shop.

BK never did chicken or fish worth a ****!
The Big Lebowski is one of the finer movies around.
McD’s burgers are crap, but BK’s aren’t much better nowadays in my experience. They used to be good, but I just can’t stand them anymore. Wendy’s is good and cheap, so that’s what I go with in my area. Plus, they have the best shakes :)
Avoid the chili though, I hear they throw the old burger patties in the chili pot, even ones that fell on the floor.
I seriously wonder how anyone can stomach McDonalds on a regular basis. Terrible hamburgers and the fries aren’t very good anymore either. Warmed over piss couldn’t be much worse than a regular McDonalds eating experience.
I eat there about once a year, usually breakfast if I am on the road and they are the only option.
I loved Burger King flame broiled burgers but my wife didn’t so I don’t eat there much anymore. Sorry to hear they have changed so much for the worst. I’ll have to give them a try soon and see for myself.
Wendys really went downhill fast just before Dave died. Good to hear they are getting better.
Well the chili is my fave LOL
Do people really eat fish tacos? Just reading the words fish taco about make me retch!
Wendys burgers have never been that special.
I like the spicy chiken sangwich, but dot put the lettuce on the hot chicken to wilt.
It aint rocket science.
Most joints do the same with the burger then they put the tomato against the bun and it gets all wilty.
I do! they are awesome!
Their "Burgers for Breakfast" menu option is cool, and I like grabbing a couple regular cheeseburgers and a coffee for breakfast.
I also like the flame-broiled smell of their burgers cooking that you get from the parking lot. It kinda lures me in.
(BTW, I'm not so much as a pound overweight.)
tacos de camarron are also awesome!
Chile verde, squeeze of lime.
Wull, what about Carl’s Jr. or Jack in the Box???
I suppose barbacoa is out of your realm?
A little doctoring with salt and ketchup and they are okay; they’re not the best burger-joint fries, though.
I still kinda wish they had made that Jumbaco ☺
Nobody knows whats in that taco but at 3 am who cares?
I dont think any of them make decent fries anymore.
“I went to a burger king a few weeks ago for the first time in years. Im impressed that they still exist.”
I think Whoppers with cheese are really good.
Speakin of tacos, the best taco salads are at Jimboy’s Tacos. Do you have those where you live?
I have never heard of them.
Im kinda rural
We dont even have a BK any more.
Here’s a piece of advice, even if the libs like to use it: support local businesses!
If I had my pick of fast food places to go for lunch tomorrow, I’d pick Jack in the Box, though. They have a lot of variety on their menu, and I LOVE the Sourdough Jack.
