NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Wendy's is taking a bite out of Burger King in the fast food business.
Dave Thomas's restaurants became the No. 2-selling hamburger chain in the country last year, industry research firm Technomic said Monday, pushing Burger King back to the No. 3 spot. Burger King had been No. 2 spot since at least 1972, the earliest year for which Technomic has data.
Wendy's (WEN) U.S. sales totaled $8.5 billion last year, edging out Burger King and its $8.4 billion. Wendy's has roughly 5,900 locations in the U.S. compared with Burger King's 7,200.
McDonald's (MCD, Fortune 500), meanwhile, dwarfed both with over $34 billion in sales last year at its 14,098 U.S. locations. It's the largest restaurant chain in the country, followed by Subway, Starbucks (SBUX, Fortune 500), Wendy's and Burger King. (McDonald's phasing out tiny cages for pigs)
Five Guys Burgers and Fries ranked as the fastest-growing chain in the U.S. last year, Technomic said, followed by Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG) and Jimmy John's Gourmet Sandwich Shop.

Considering how big they are Wendy’s food is still pretty decent.
Give me Sonic, Culver’s, or for that matter Buffalo Wild Wings food any day.
Once upon a time, it really did “take two hands to handle a Whopper”, but BK’s glory days were over once the Whopper became just another burger.
I don’t know why people try and compare Five Guys to In-N-Out. I tried Five Guys once but never again. Terrible!
If you’re not driving, sit and enjoy McD’s Angus Classic...(I like the one with Swiss and mushrooms) very good and very reminiscent of Red Robin burgers (for a lot less).
The Whopper was a great burger back in the day. The grills are all gone. I prefer a local diner with a working grill and fresh meat. I pay the same for a burger.
Butter burgers are good.
I have to say, Wendy’s really does appear to have stepped up its game with its new burgers, other sandwiches and milkshakes. Those new burgers are darn good.
How long and how much does it take to make your own burger? Geez?!
It’s the Frosties.
Smashburger is the best!
I had a spicy baja for lunch the other day and was enjoying those jalapenos well into the evening!
In the 80s the Western Star was the shizzle!
Yup. A but pricey but so is Carls Jr now
WAY too expensive!!!!

Did they really change? I thought they tasted different.
The soda machines inside the last BK I visited didn’t even work. There was every bit of 6 people eating and 6 working. BK, you time was done years ago.
Even the McDodos frys are lack luster now, bit they beat BK
I hate when the frys are grainy and flavorless because they have been frozen
Ho hard is it to make a proper fry in proper fat?
Yep! Privately owned. For now until zero one gets his fingers on them.
