So much for serving the homeless.
The Bloomberg administration is now taking the term “food police” to new depths, blocking food donations to all government-run facilities that serve the city’s homeless.
In conjunction with a mayoral task force and the Health Department, the Department of Homeless Services recently started enforcing new nutritional rules for food served at city shelters. Since DHS can’t assess the nutritional content of donated food, shelters have to turn away good Samaritans.
For over a decade, Glenn Richter and his wife, Lenore, have led a team of food-delivery volunteers from Ohab Zedek, the Upper West Side Orthodox congregation.
They’ve brought freshly cooked, nutrient-rich surplus foods from synagogue events to homeless facilities in the neighborhood. (Disclosure: I know the food is so tasty because I’ve eaten it — I’m an OZ member.) The practice of donating such surplus food to homeless shelters is common among houses of worship in the city.
DHS Commissioner Seth Diamond says the ban on food donations is consistent with Mayor Bloomberg’s emphasis on improving nutrition for all New Yorkers. A new interagency document controls what can be served at facilities — dictating serving sizes as well as salt, fat and calorie contents, plus fiber minimums and condiment recommendations.
The city also cites food-safety issues with donations, but it’s clear that the real driver behind the ban is the Bloomberg dietary diktats.
Diamond insists that the institutional vendors hired by the shelters serve food that meets the rules but also tastes good; it just isn’t too salty. So, says the commissioner, the homeless really don’t need any of the synagogue’s food.
Glenn Richter’s experience suggests otherwise. He says the beneficiaries — many of them senior citizens recovering from drug and alcohol abuse — have always been appreciative of the treats he and other OZ members bring.

Its not just that the donations offer an enjoyable addition to the official low-salt fare; knowing that the food comes from volunteers and community members warms their hearts, not just their stomachs.
Can anyone explain to me how Bloomberg was able to run as a Republican!
If you are starving, do you have a problem with the nutritional grade of the food? It is better than eating sawdust.
Hmmm. Houston, NYC, and other crack down on donating food to the homeless all at the same time.
Houston’s also ramping up prosecution of food trucks and noisy dance nights at clubs.
Priorities when Democrats are in charge.
The homeless will just go back to dumpster diving in trash bins outside fast food joints.
This has nothing to do with nutrition. It’s about creating a supply chain for a crony or a union.
Ain’t no cheese like gub’ment cheese!
More insanity with each passing day.
“Can anyone explain to me how Bloomberg was able to run as a Republican!”
Rhetorical I know, but same reason McPain, and now Romney. The GOP-E.
Logic says if the Radical Left can take over the DemocRAT Party, then why not the leadership of the other major party as well.
I think that’s what we are experiencing.
So, NO FOOD is better to a homeless person (and their families) than FREE FOOD from a church, synagogue, mosque or temple?................Bloomberg must have his hands on the food distro lines somewhere and must be making big bucks.............
Bloomberg Government Uber Alles.
Taxes are collected at the point of a gun. If you don't believe that then don't pay. They will send armed officers of the law to pick you up.
I think this action gives perverts like Bloomberg some sort of sexual thrill.
“But a certain Samaritan being on his journey, came near him; and seeing him, was moved with compassion.
And going up to him, bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine: and setting him upon his own beast, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. “
City officials arrested the Samaritan and charged him with practicing medicine without a license; improper handling of medical waste; illegal dispensing of beer, wine, or spirits; animal cruelty; illegal operation of an emergency vehicle or ambulance; leaving the scene of a an accident; failure to notify law enforcement of a crime; operation of an unlicensed medical facility.
Just sign up. Best I can tell, Republican politicians are just fine with big government.
Because he knew he couldn't buy his way through the Dem primary and there was no one on the R side to fill Rudy's shoes, so he just bought the R nomination and then the election. He was never a Republican.
He wasn't Mark Green?
