Nation-building in Islamic lands does not make us safer, its costs in blood and treasure are prohibitive, and it does not work because they dont want what were offering. Our security does not hinge on their freedom; it hinges on their knowing that we are not to be trifled with.
I am not going to worry about freedom and security in Syria when freedom and security in America are being stripped away.
Let Syria Be!

” We will hold sacred the beliefs held sacred by others. “
...on the other hand, you are not allowed to freely practice the beliefs you hold sacred yourself.
We should have stayed away from Egypt, Libia and the rest - all this will come back to bite one way or another.

I’m sorry, but the creators of AlQaeda were the Saudis, our “allies”, not the Shia Iranis
McCarthy is spot on with every single word of his commentary.
Particularly “Our security does not hinge on their freedom; it hinges on their knowing that we are not to be trifled with.”
Who among us thinks that the Taliban will not be invited back in after we withdraw from Afghanistan. We accomplished out mission there in the first few months after we drove them out. They got the message that we were not to be trifled with and they should stick to what they know best, brutalizing each other and not prodding the overseas giant with a stick.
No nation building. No fiction of winning hearts and minds because they have neither.Bomb and leave. If they do not get the message then repeat and rinse. Eventually it sinks in.
Good article by McCarthy, but I think it’s high time someone did an honest assessment and started looking into what is likely to be a pretty disturbing angle to this nation’s foreign policy — namely, the role of foreign money in our electoral process and the influence that money has in U.S. foreign policy decisions that have absolutely no benefit for the citizens of this nation.
Sounds good so far.
Exactly!!!
Unfortunately, current trends make it appear that we can be more than trifled with, we can be beaten. The whole world of radical islam is now emboldened, and on the march.
And no, I don't blame Obama. It was Bush II's to lose, and he lost it. If only Bush had understood your statement above.
Most of the middle east tribes, and tribes is what they are, require, and seem to prefer, the rule of dictators, secular, religious, or both.
Preparing the way for the 12th Imam and the destruction of Israel (and America).
When Muslims are killing Muslims it would be culturally insensitive to interfere.

What’s wrong with islamists killing islamists?
9/11 was committed by Sunnis. Al Queda is a Sunni organization. If Syria devolves into Shiite/Sunni civil war, I’ll be cheering the Shiite side — while munching popcorn.
