Santorum Blasts Gingrich Over 'Romneycare'

Chris Welch Springfield, Missouri (CNN) – It's a common aspect of Republican Rick Santorum's stump: attacking Mitt Romney for creating - and then "recommending" - "Romneycare" to President Barack Obama.

But Saturday, fresh off his projected win in the Kansas caucuses, Santorum added that GOP presidential rival Newt Gingrich is "honestly not a whole lot better."

"For 20 years when I was pushing medical savings accounts, he was pushing a federal mandate for health insurance," Santorum said. "And when 'Romneycare' passed, he sent out a glowing statement talking about how this wonderful bill had just passed in Massachusetts."

Santorum argues that Obama, Gingrich and Romney all line up on the same side when it comes to their support for an individual mandate.

The campaign points to a 2006 newsletter Gingrich wrote for his consulting firm, the Center for Health Transformation, in which he praised Romney's Massachusetts health care reform.

"The health bill that Governor Romney signed into law this month has tremendous potential to effect major change in the American health system," Gingrich wrote, according to the report.

Also in the newsletter, Gingrich expressed his support for the individual mandate in Massachusetts, but only for those making at least $54,000 a year. And while he commended Romney's effort in building the plan, he acknowledged the bill will likely face "tremendous scrutiny" from those who doubt the law will work.

That's just not accurate. Santorum and Gingrich have been on the attack against Romney and Obama, while Romney has been focusing mainly on Santorum.

What appears to have started the Santorum vs. Gingrich attacks (again) was the Internet ad criticizing Santorum posted here yesterday (?) from the Gingrich campaign.

I know that the first thought that’ll run through my head every morning when I wake up in the labor camp will be “I can’t believe Newt Gingrich married more than once.”

ha ha. you always crack me up. the other day someone posted that newt's campaign was for grown ups, and you asked if you could join even though you were incredibly immature. I laughed at that all day :)

"Maybe Rick could ask Obama to create a “Morals Czar” position for him."

Yes...I'm sure Obama will get around to that, just as soon as he is done attacking the Catholic Church.

"...Then his supporters here could drop any pretense about limited government. They’re primarily nanny staters that want their guy in the White House..."

You are obviously sadly unfamiliar with our founders belief that limited government was possible only through public virtue. Ever heard of a guy named John Adams? "Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other."

"their OVERWHELMING focus on Newt’s personal life, and his alleged moral shortcomings

You read my #76. It's clear you didn't understand it. I don't care if Newt cheated on his ex, cheated on his taxes, cheated on his diet, etc. I do care that when he's confronted on his personal failings, he uses his love of country as a subterfuge to explain and mitigate it.

Last year he said it. He said he’s not a scientist. Who did Rick sit down with? If you vetted him, you should know.

*Sigh*! You guys don’t WANT to get it. All Newt is doing now by remaining in the race is maintaining the gap,Romney vRick. The only chance we have of spoiling Milt’s coronation, and it’s a slim chance, is to focus voters one-on-one Rick v. Romney. Everyone knows it, but some can’t accept it. Bob

Santorum is nuts. The GOP-E will not repeal Obamacare. Santorum and Romney are both establishment GOP so our only best chance of repealing Obamacare is to elect Newt Gingrich along with another batch of tea party candidates to congress.

I wish the Santorum shills would get that through their thick heads.

So, YOU believe that a trace gas can cause climactic catastrophe if it increases slightly? You need not be a scientist to smell the skunk behind this scam.

You’re in denial FRiend. The only chance of getting rid of Romney is for Newt and Rick to deny Romney delegates where they can and take it to the convention. The only thing that Newt getting out accomplishes is ensuring a long drawn out humiliating defeat for Rick. Hmmmm......

Go listen to the debates where at the time the Specter issue was raised he did say he had made a lot of mistakes. With the senate divided 51-49, he did say that he backed Specter and it helped get Justice Alito onto the court. Now who can quarrel with that given the narrow split opinions on US SC decisions and of course the upcoming vote on the constitutionality of ObamaCare.

Any truthful negative post on Gingrich brings a hornets nest of protests so why don’t you folks wear a plaque around your necks that says “Gingrich can do no wrong” since your minds are impermeable to the spoiler role that Gingrich is playing.

Only Rick can nail him on that issue.

Bull!! When he campaigned for Romneycare - shoving it down the voters throats saying he's the best candidate for us in '08.

He doesn't have a leg to stand on with someone who will take him to task. Will he say that he was 'doing for the team' again? What else can he say? He can't nail anyone on it.

Newt is cooked. Done. Finished. He has little support aside from a few states.

So, keeping Obamacare in place is acceptable to you? You do realize the GOP-E haven’t the stomach to take on that fight, right?

Well the more we here about Rick. The less and less some of us like him.

Newt is the only one attacking Obama in the Primary. Where is Santorum on his Energy policy, The burning of the koran, Putting us under UN jurisdiction on declaration of war.

Newt leads and Santorum follows along. This country is in to deep of trouble for OJT.

I’m frustrated. FReepers and other conservatives believing that all we have to do is defeat Obama and everything will right itself. Who we replace Obama with is every bit as vital as defeating him.

Don’t look now, but a new IL poll shows what happened in MI, OH, WA, AK, and AZ is going to happen there: splitting the vote:

Romney 35% Santorum 31% Newt 12% Paul 7% Undecided: 15%

It’s this simple. Romney picks up a 1/3 of the delegates in each Southern state by getting only 20-25% of the vote with 2 Anti-Romney’s in the race. He’s going to get that at least in AL and MS, just like he did in OK. That alone will get him over 1,144 when you factor in the favorable Romney states.

The only chance is for the Anti-Romneys to combine. Santorum has shown he can win where Newt can, but Newt has shown he can’t win anywhere outside the South. Go ahead, play this ego trip out. At the end of the day when Romney has the nomination, you have no one to blame but yourself.

Santorum finally stopped skidding in Gallups/Rasmussen’s tracking poll and is hovering back around 25%, while Romney was cruising to 40% but has fallen back to 35%. Meanwhile, Gingrich is still stuck at or below 15%.

If it is not Santorum, it will be Romney. That is a fact.

“the upcoming vote on the constitutionality of ObamaCare”

Which there would be NO NEED FOR had specter not voted FOR it. Can’t have your cake and eat it too.

he went around with her pushing the it would be more "efficient" if we let the Federales control our health records.

you need to understand something, the medical profession is either divided 50-50 over EMR or more of them want it than don't. It is a real timesaver, is sometimes a lifesaver, makes a physician's work, especially in acute care settings, much more effective and efficient.

There are, however, ways to go about. Newt would undo the govt part of it, as it is still wafting around out there, is so burdensome and egregious, that it's not yet totally been implemented, and doctors are fighting the layers of it. Newt would have someone in the private sector do it... with patient security as the top factor. He describes it as, if you are in Germany, and you want money from your bank acct in America, you get it in the same amount of time that you would if you were at an ATM next door to your bank, and there is never any security compromised because of the hugeness of the network.

That's what he wants for docs. Fingertip access with huge patient safeguards and done privately. He doesn't want a database in govt hands, he just wants a database, there is a huge difference. And, as with most of Newt's proposals, he wants the patient to have the choice of opting out.

You santorum supporters have got to stop this, if for no other reason than your own personal integrity. You are still going to have to live with yourself when the election is over. Stop telling lies.
