MITT ROMNEY may be as close to a walking, talking dollar sign as presidential politics has ever witnessed. If money were made flesh, it would apparently have fair skin, flawless hair and an off-key tropism toward patriotic anthems.
I say that only partly because of all of those awkward asides of his, the ones that keep reminding voters, who need no further reminding, that hes loaded. And Im not really focused on just how loaded he is. With a personal net worth in the vicinity of $225 million, Romney is no Warren Buffett, no Bill Gates. There have been more affluent candidates for the presidency. For lesser offices, too. Michael Bloomberg could buy and sell Romney several times over and still have enough left for a couple of Cadillacs.
But every discussion of Romneys campaign, no matter the angle, winds up referring to riches. Its uncanny. Wealth is the Go on the Monopoly board of Mitt: youre either starting there, heading there or circling past it. If only you collected $200 each time.
His detractors, citing his personal awkwardness and policy flip-flops, believe that money is the only reason hes doing as well as he is, which isnt as well as hed hoped. His campaigns fund-raising total of nearly $75 million by the end of February dwarfs those of his Republican rivals, and thats not counting the coffers of the super PAC supporting him. The two treasuries combined fuel a spending juggernaut.
But they also hammer home the image of him as the designated frontman of the moneyed establishment: Mammons missionary. At a time of populist rancor and class resentment, thats no asset, and some of his supporters believe its holding him back.
The truth lies in between. Romneys presidential bid, a fascinating commentary on

"Curdle" is definitely the right word for Mitt and his campaign.
NY SLIMES..
If Myth is the GOP nominee, OWS will burn the country to the ground next summer, and Ubama will blame Myth, and the mind-numbed robots of the Left will believe it.
Somebody needs to assure them that ‘bam’s not exactly poor.
Mittbot
He should be embarrassed that the election is costing him so much. So far, Santorum has only spent half again what my congressman spent in the whole election cycle of 2010.
FR ZOT, Romneybot.
The left has coined a very witty rename for him:
(R)Money.
“Flawless” hair? Is that like oil-slicked hair?
I get so tired of Romney being characterized as good-looking. He is not. His face is bloated and baggy, he has sacks under his eyes, and he gives me the creeps.
Hurray! I knew you were watching, LOL.
Maybe the real trick will be getting one of the 12 honchos in Salt Lake City to give a meaningful interview....
I would not be happy with a candidate who had no savings at all - a candidate who is careless with personal money is not likely to be much better with our money. Otherwise, I don’t care if the candidate has $200k, $20M, or $1B. This is a non-issue.
That' rich ...
... voting for someone because they don't not have a savings account.
<wink> <wink>
You're just endorsing personal savings accounts, not Romney, right?
<wink> <wink>
Yep. Romney is the second worst possible choice for our White House - the worst is already there. I have over the past year expressed a willingness to support Palin, Bachmann, Cain, Perry, Fred Thompson, DeMint, Gingrich, Santorum, and others for the nomination, so I'm very obviously not set on one choice. Of the remaining candidates, Newt is by far my top choice. I'm not sure Ron Paul is sane, but I would prefer him over Romney. And if Romney gets the nomination, I'll vote for the most conservative candidate in every other national race - we will need a congress that will restrain the leftist instincts of either Romney or Obama - but I will not vote for Romney.
So you're right. I'm endorsing personal responsibility in politicians, but definitely not Romney.
I don’t care one witt that Romney is rich. I do however care that he is a liberal and the he has used his money to destroy everyone else running this primary. But most of all I care that he will lose in a landslide to Obama if he is our nominee, because he is only liked in places that he has zero chance of winning in the general and is hated everywhere else he actually needs to win.
