Rick Santorum's taken the lead in the Republican Presidential race in North Carolina with 31% to 25% for Mitt Romney and 23% for Newt Gingrich. A month ago Gingrich and Romney were tied for the lead with Santorum running 10 points behind.
Romney's staying competitive in North Carolina despite the fact that GOP voters there are pretty tepid toward him. Only 43% have a favorable opinion and an equal 43% see him negatively. That makes him less popular than both Gingrich (45/41) and Santorum (58/29).
Romney's really benefiting from Gingrich continuing to be strong enough in the South that he splits the conservative vote with Santorum, unlike in other parts of the country where conservatives are increasingly unifying around Santorum as the alternative to Romney. Among voters identifying as 'very conservative' Santorum leads Gingrich 35-32 with Romney at 19%.

Go Rick! Beat Romney!
Santorum is looking good in the South.
I do wish Newt would step up, be a good Republican, and drop out of the race.
Otherwise, it’s Romney all the way. :(
Willard the Lib, about half that.

GO NEWT GO.....
** President Newt Gingrich-”Our beloved republic deserves nothing less.”
Now it’s up to the last minute deciders.
I don’t know about you, but I hang up on the robocalls right away.
The negative TV ads only turn people off.
I’m looking forward to a Santorum win in NC.
May 8th is a long way off in Primary Season here in NC.
Newt, Rick and Paul continue to take more votes than Mitt - but they all three can’t win.
I’m glad you guys are finally at least trying to stay positive on FR and not trashing the other “anti-Romney”. Though I’m a Santorum guy, I have nothing negative at all to say about Newt. I’ll gladly vote for him if he’s the nominee.
Be nice if Newt decided to be the running mate and get out after this week.
Come on, Santo! Going to donate again.
I wish the Newtsters would pay attention. Newt didn’t like that his friend rush didn’t support him during his rises and even described the rough parts during his decline. So his estrogen-dominated self ( you can see it when you look at him, not being mean but he is estrogen dominant, many older heavy men are) got all bitchy retributive a nd he threw rush under the bus.
WRONG SIDE OF THIS ISSUE.
Rush is on the freedom and truth side.
Newt did nothing of the kind. He brilliantly deflected the question about Rush like no one else is capable of when asked by the media and he got a truly powerful, detailed, insightful, convincing, common sense conservative argument against Obama out on the air instead. You could see how peeved David Gregory was that Newt did so well despite Gregory’s best efforts to trip him up.
Santorum is the one who said Rush’s comments were “absurd.”
The funny thing the gap in the timing of these polls apparently skipped over the peak of the Santorum surge. Great to see Newt is already surging so well in a state where he isn’t even directly campaigning. Looks like taking the fight to the national media is working for him. Pretty soon Santorum and Newt will switch places in this poll with Newt back on top.
Your guy called Rush "absurd" and Newt said only that Rush was right to apologize after the fact and after he was asked about it. He then took the opportunity to attack Obama for his apology to Afghanistan radicals and take on the media for their bias. Go watch him on Meet The Press or read the transcript.
YAWN. NC votes on May 8. That’s two months away. Nice try deflecting Santorum’s clear downward momentum heading into tomorrow though.
Thanks for the heads-up. I didn’t realize that NC is not until May.
“Estrogen dominated”...and pussy-whipped!
