Those old well holes are extremely dangerous.
What would one of those look like over the years? I can’t get the cartoon image of a perfectly round hole drilled straight down out of my mind. Of course it couldn’t be shaped like that in this case.
That is very true. Our neighbors across the street had one open up in their backyard. It was stone lined and went down a long ways. Whoever covered it in the past put a BOARD across it and covered it with soil! You can imagine what happened to that board over the years. I can’t believe an idiot would do that without thinking about future property owners. Our subdivision was built in 1952 and this area was plum orchards before that for 50 years. I’d guess a stone-lined water well here (CA Silicon Valley) probably goes back to the pioneers in the late 1800s. Thankfully nobody fell into their well.
Poor little guy, I hope he’s O.K.
May they recover him safely, poor little guy. I fell down a steep ravine at about that age while wandering alone near some construction. Little guys start to become a bit adventurous and curious at that age. Somehow I dug my way out of the pile of dirt and rocks burying me, crawled out of the ravine and made my way back home. I got yelled at for getting myself really dirty and making up wild stories. I really pray the little guy survives to tell his grandchildren his story.
This reminds me of that old 1940s news story, about Kathy Fiscus.
That little girl did not survive the fall, though. But it was a huge radio event, live.
Prayers for this little boy.

I remember this occasion.
Thanks Tootsie!
Prayers going up for all involved.
Very sad- there are old wells, old mine shafts, old caved in cesspools all over this country and I live in fear that a child will fall into one. The problem is not knowing they are there- vegetation can hide them and many years ago some people just piled wood on top and threw dirt over them, of course when the wood rots out you have a real problem.
Imagine the horror of a long fall and being trapped in a dark upright tunnel only three feet wide. I hope he wasn't injured in the fall and in great pain while trapped.

This is truly sad for the family; and I hope the boy can be rescued without injury.
However, parents really, really need to teach their children to stay out of other people’s yards.

Wells or old cisterns. When we lived at HOPE, west of Artesia, there were abandoned cisterns all over town. They looked like a cement soda bottle with only their neck above ground, and about 20 feet deep. If you fell in one you would still be there today.
CARLSBAD, N.M. — Fire officials said a 4-year-old boy who disappeared after falling into a hole near his Carlsbad home likely perished in the fall.
At about 9:45 a.m. Sunday, the Carlsbad Fire Department said they transitioned from a rescue operation to a recovery operation as they continued to dig into the 30-foot-deep hole they believe Samuel Jones fell into.
Carlsbad police said they believe they found Jones about 7 a.m. Sunday after he disappeared at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.
The Carlsbad Fire Department said they determined the conditions the boy fell into were not survivable.
Firefighters said the hole is about 14 inches in diameter and approximately 30 feet dep. Crews are preparing to dig a trench from the side of the hole and shore up the sides as they go.
Officials said they expect the operation to be a delicate and time-consuming effort.
Fire crews said a local mine rescue team were assisting in the rescue operation.

The owners may not have even been aware the hole was there. Coverings put on years ago may have deteriorated and fell in when he stepped on it, or there may have been vegetation hiding it.
I will continue to pray for the little guy to be rescued, I don’t know what the conditions are that lead them to believe he couldn’t have survived- but I am still hoping they are wrong.
No why would you sue someone for something they probably did not know was there when the child was not supposed to be on their land?
