(CNN) -- One day, California wakes up and every single Latino has inexplicably disappeared. No business owner, doctor, nurse, soldier, teacher, entertainer, athlete or politician can be found. No bus driver, farm worker, cook, gardener or nanny. All gone. California -- the ninth largest economy in the world -- grinds to a halt because Latinos have vanished. Chaos and tragedy follow. This scenario is what Sergio Arau's satiric film, "A Day Without a Mexican," explores.
This modern-day fable provides a cautionary tale on the assumptions we make about the 11 million unauthorized immigrants who live and work in America every day.
An oft-repeated mantra used to malign these "economic refugees" -- a term that more closely defines who they actually are, rather than the inflammatory "illegal immigrant" -- is that they don't pay taxes. They send their kids to our schools, and they don't pay taxes. They earn their wages, and they don't pay income tax. Such incendiary assertions are coded language designed explicitly to generate a negative reaction. The facts, which most people don't know, refute such claims entirely.Sales tax. Like everyone in the country, every time a refugee goes to a store and buys something, they pay sales tax. They buy milk; they pay sales tax. They buy shoes; they pay sales tax. They buy a television; they pay sales tax.
Property tax. When refugees rent -- whether it's in an apartment building, a room in a house or a house -- a portion of that rent is passed on to the landlord, who pays property tax to the state.

-- a portion of that rent is passed on to the landlord, who pays property tax to the state. Too bad land lord owns the property and it's his responsibility to pay property taxes. If one illegal lives, landlord is still charged with full payment property taxes.Property taxes come but once a year.......A similar phenomenon holds true on the state level. In December 2006, Texas was the first state to conduct a comprehensive financial analysis of the impact of undocumented immigrants on a state's budget and economy. The stunning results showed that "undocumented immigrants produced $1.58 billion in state revenues... Just how many used documet fraud as in fake or stolen documents ?
Is BRAF different from BARF? =)
Not this baloney again.
They had one of those a couple years ago.
No business was impacted, but traffic improved greatly that day.
I hate when I have to BRAF. ;)
No one would be whining.
No one would see every issue through a racial lens.
Everyone would be a productive worker.
Almost everyone would spend part of their day thanking God for the beautiful world He has given us.
It would be wonderful.
And if Anglos just said to hell with it, Charlie
The world would turn to chaos. So shut the hell up.
We didn’t have “Mexicans” when I grew up. We did so well without them that we created the conditions wherein the bumming is so good that every Mexican in Mexico wanted to come here.
They don’t know how stupid they are for asking that question.
Let’s see—fewer drunk drivers with no licenses driving 20-year old clunkers with no insurance, roughly 2/5ths the violent crime overall no MS-13, no jibber jabbering in Spanish on the AM dial, no press 2 for English. It works for me—let’s make it every day, not just a day.
I’m stuned!
does it really matter, we are being ripped off. Mispelled the word, only it does not take away, the fact we as taxpayers are being ripped off and whats more important misspelled word or illegals ripping you off ?
I made it from the South Bay to Downtown LA in 20-minutes that day.
I wish every day was a day without a Mexican.
amen.
A day would be bad.
Give us a week and the American unemployment rate would drop to 4%.
hiiiie! I dun speel vewy well n 4 dat i.m sowwy
-lol.z. u ish a sweetii n I wanna b yer babuh.wood yew like fer me ta dezign a webpage fer yaz? Imma very pr0feshioinalz.
I hate BRAF.
First off, I’m going to preface my dissertation by saying that I am taking the article’s mention of “Mexican” as ILLEGAL ALIEN and not legal immigrants. That said, here is what I say to the author:
A day without a Mexican is a day we are free more from disease, murder, rape, DUI vehicular homicide, crowding of our emergency rooms, overcrowding of our neo-natal centers that have to help them download their little anchors free of charge, free of blocking traffic at every stop n go quickie mart in the mornings, free of little illegals and anchors overcrowding our schools and driving up our school taxes, free of the anchor baby mamas crowding Walmart with their WICs checks - their EBTs - their SNAP checks - all the while not speaking one friggin word of English.
Lastly, we are free from having to endure their grabbing their crotches and yelling Reconquista while they desecrate my flag. Frankly, illegal or not, if you hoist the Mexican Flag over the US flag while desecrating it, you can go the hell back to Mexico, legal or not.
I once drank too much whiksey (or was it vokda) and had to braf.

“I made it from the South Bay to Downtown LA in 20-minutes that day.”
I remember that day well, the stay home boycott. Some local black-owned restaurants were closed as well, in sympathy.
The weekday traffic in the SF bay area flowed wonderfully that day, which is highly unusual for the commute hours. That day is remembered fondly...
