A man who was born with half a left arm is suing Starbucks for failing to hire him as a barista.
Eli Pierre sued the company in San Diego two weeks ago for unspecified damages.
Pierre says that during a Feb. 1 interview for a San Diego job, the store manager told him that the coffee flavoring syrups were placed high up and a one-armed man couldn't work there.
The discrimination suit claims that the former bartender was capable of doing the job but was never given a chance to fully explain his capabilities or possible accommodation as required under state law.
Starbucks says it employs many disabled persons and Pierre's disability wouldn't disqualify him. The company says his application was thoughtfully considered and disputes his version of the interview.
This guy read the Americans With Disabilities Act. You have to show clearly that the man could not do the job, after you make “reasonable accommodations”.
I’ve heard it’s very hard for lawyers to find work nowadays.
I quit whining about ANYTHING after that experience.

Maybe he could be kept busy hanging wallpaper?
Couldn’t this guy get a job at a casino?
Next thing you know, they’ll want to pitch in MLB!
Oh...wait.
Nevermind.
(Go Angels!)
I could have sworn the one-armed man fell to his death while being pursued by Richard Kimble. Who knew he survived and later sought work at Starbucks?
And what constitutes “reasonable” a court will decide.
And wasn’t there a hitter in the 40’s with NO arms who batted around .260?
Common sense usually works. In this case, the man really thought he could serve up coffee since he previously held a job serving drinks. A huge clue to the starbucks interviewer.
In an update to the story, Harrison Ford refused comment.
I guess I’m old school. Whenever I think of the Fugitive, David Janssen is the first to come to mind.
Probably the guy who was doing the hiring should have been more careful with his questions. “How much experience do you have as a barista?” or something like that.
Or maybe he should have said the same thing when the police start questioning you. “Sorry, I can’t answer any more questions until my lawyer is present.”
Good grief.
Where to put the coins. Decision, decisions...
The man wants to work; has demonstrated he has the skill to do this type of job in the past and, yet, he was denied the opportunity to even demonstrate he could do the job.
For those who do not see the merit in this man's complaint: Would it be beneficial to the taxpayers that he stay home on welfare/disability???
I once worked for a boss who had only one arm.
My co-workers had nicknamed me “The Fugitive” because
the one-armed man was ruining my life.
Probably he shouldn’t have assumed that just because he needs two hands to do the job doesn’t mean it can’t be done one handed. I used to work the grill at McDs and if you asked me could the job be done one handed I’d say not a chance. Then I started going to the Desert Museum, they had a burger grill there and frequently the guy running it was the same one armed guy, I know why he got all those shifts too, he killed it. Probably the fastest most efficient grill guy I’ve ever seen.
