Poll: Christie is top choice at 'brokered' convention
The Washington Times ^ | Feb. 22, 2012 | Dave Boyer

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is the top choice of Republicans if the party nominates its presidential candidate at a "brokered" convention this summer, according to a Quinnipiac University national poll released Wednesday.

Mr. Christie is favored by 32 percent of Republicans, followed by former Govs. Sarah Palin of Alaska and Jeb Bush of Florida with 20 percent each, the poll found. Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels is fourth at 15 percent.

Some conservatives are contemplating a so-called brokered Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla., in August, in which none of the current candidates would have gained enough delegates to win the nomination and the party delegates would be free to nominate someone not in the primary race. Respondents in the Quinnipiac poll were asked to choose a candidate who's not in the current field. Mr. Christie has endorsed former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

The poll showed that 48 percent of Republican and Republican-leaning independent voters believe it would be bad for the party to engage in a brokered convention; 37 percent disagreed.

Christie impressed me before the hurricane hit. While other governors were saying, “We’re going to take care of you ... there are centers here here and here and supplies...” Christie had the balls to say, “Get out of Dodge. If you have family or friends ... go stay with them ... we can’t support all of you...”

I think the nominee needs to be one of the four men who have entered into and stayed with the primary process.

If someone can’t stand up in front of the GOP primary electorate and make their case then they should not be our nominee.

That’s where Rick Perry would have been strong and we all know what conservatives did to him. What specifically has Christie said against Second Amendment rights?

To misquote Barbara Bush:

Chris Christie seems happy in New Jersey. And I hope he stays there.

Most delegates are bound through the first ballot.

Subsequent ballots would be subject to massive wheeling and dealing and backroom deals among those representing both established candidates who came to the convention with pledged delegates and any dark horse latecomers. Swapping of favors and promises, etc.

That’s how it was done in the old days. Compromise was what gave us the unlikely duo of Kennedy/Johnson, who despised one another.

I doubt it will happen this year, but this political junkie would find it great fun.

Of course, this political junkie doesn’t really like anyone currently running and will gladly vote for a baked potato over Barry Obama. No horse in the GOP race, so nothing to lose, just a spectacle to watch.

you forgot to add in he took on the teachers unions and won big....its funny but many of the same people who love Ronald Reagan here (as I do)- a former demoKrat who gave amnesty to millions of illegals- get their panties in a bunch over Christie...

except for Sarah Palin there’s few 10000% conservatives out there and as much as I love Palin, she would not beat ayatollah obama in a national election...

"As a practical matter Christie probably would end up doing more to cut spending in Washington than any other Republican candidate.

Unless the Muslims asked him to spend more on them.

I watched Christie on Piers Morgan last night. I thought he was just wrong on policy, but he’s actually really obnoxious too. And the establishment calls the current crop losers.

Politico

The former Louisiana governor announces in a statement that he’s ending his bid for the GOP nomination, but not his presidential campaign:

Tomorrow, I will formally end my bid for the GOP nomination for President of the United States. As the GOP and the networks host debate number twenty-something this evening, they have once again turned their backs on the democratic process by choosing to exclude a former Governor and Congressman. I have decided to take my campaign directly to the American people by declaring my candidacy for Americans Elect. Also, after many discussions with The Reform Party, I am excited to announce my intentions of seeking their nomination. It is time to heal our nation and build a coalition of Americans who are fed up with the status quo and the partisan gridlock that infects Washington. Together, we will take on the special-interests that control our leaders and end the corruptive influence of money in politics so we can focus on America’s top priority – jobs.

Total BS, the person with the most votes will win at convention and that will be it.

I think an issue at work is terminology. A brokered convention would be like the one in 1920 when the party bosses picked Senator Harding, something of a dark horse, over others. Now that can’t happen today.

An open convention on the GOP side would be if no one got a majority on the first ballot, then the delegates were released, and nomination were taken for vote from activists on the floor. This was tried on the GOP side in 1952, 1964, and 1968 so I’m told. I feel that it’s unlikely this year. But it’s impossible? I don’t know.

I AGREE....only if this becomes necessary. I will let the primary take its course first. I would be much happier with Christie than with Romney. I did NOT like some of his policies...but generally he hits the big issues WELL. Electing more patriots to the House and Senate will only ADD to the “insurance” that things will get done in a way to help this country.

A house divided cannot stand. We’ve GOT to agree on SOMEONE.

There is NO perfect candidate and this election is CRUCIAL.

Pray and fast for our nation.
