The Michigan Republican Primary is just a week away, and former U.S. Senator Rick Santorum is holding on to a small lead over former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney.
The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Likely Republican Primary Voters in Michigan shows Santorum with 38% of the vote to Romneys 34%. Well behind are Texas Congressman Ron Paul with 10% support and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich at nine percent (9%). Only one percent (1%) prefers some other candidate in the race, while eight percent (8%) are undecided.
The margin between the top two candidates is little changed from last week when Santorum posted a 35% to 32% lead over Romney in the latter's native state. The story was drastically different three weeks ago when Romney coming off his big Florida Primary win led Santorum 38% to 17%.
When the other candidates are taken out of the equation, Santorum leads Romney 47% to 40% in a two-man race in Michigan. Thats a bit closer than Santorums 12-point lead last week.
This Michigan survey of 750 Likely Republican Primary Voters was conducted on February 20, 2012 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 4 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. Field work for all Rasmussen Reports surveys is conducted by Pulse Opinion Research, LLC.

I see what’s going on as a pincer move on Romney, Santorum in the industrial midwest and Gingrich in the south. Gingich’s strength will depend on his performance in the debate tomorrow.
Keep in mind that Santorum decimated Romney on Romneycare in the last debate. He knows Mitt’s lying game from the last round.
Romney has two conservative opponents and has been severely weakened before Super Tuesday. Even if he wins Michigan, it will be by the skin of his teeth and frankly, I don’t think there will be any more overwhelming victories for him. Also consider the democrats in MI who said they’d be voting for Santorum to foul things up.
There are too many plates in the air to keep track of.
Exactly right. Newt is acting like he wants Romney to win the nom. He needs to do the honorable thing here and step down.
Amazingly absurd.
Look for Willard’s surrogant Ron Paul to after Santorum.
I heard him on the radio this morning saying Santorum is no conservative and that he voted for Planned Parenthood and voted four times to raise the debt ceiling. So look for the old man to lash out out Santorum while totally ignoring his boss Willard the liberal. Here’s the truth about the lie that Dennish Kucinish’s big brother is spreading.

Not bad. The news media have been going all out to demonize Rick the past few days—including Matt Drudge. And Bishop Mitt has been spending a lot of advertising dollars. If Rick can stay ahead of Mitt, that will be terrific.
I’m sorry to see all the Santorum bashers on this thread. It really doesn’t help their candidate to do that sort of thing. It just annoys people.
Stretching beyond the boundaries of truth, I'd say.
I heard every word Ari said, and there was nothing even close to an endorsement of Santorum in it.
Bunch of bunk, editor.
Rick is doing it... now we need NEWT to add to it!... Rick and Newt should WORK TOGETHER ON THIS ONE... Let's be smart about it, If they defeat the LEFT, then there is plenty of time to fight it out among them
Yes! Then the race can be between Newt and Rick. Toss Willard out of the bus!
How right you are - both mitt/rick are GOP E. His own record shows it but his supporter just mimic what RS says, that's he's conservative which has been laughable. Even now their deception won't allow them to see the truth and/or some are really mitt/GOP E supporters hiding behind another GOP E candidate, slick rick. What Ari said should PO Trump when he rightly insinuated how some two bit former senator, now lawyer, thinks he qualified to run for president. We already have that.
Only TRUE conservatives are for Newt! The GOP E makes no bones about Newt being anti-GOP E.
GO Speaker NEWT! Squash the GOP E maggots and long live the USA/Our Constitution/WeThePeople!
Make him spend it all, Rick!
OWF, I know what a strong GOP establishment girl you are. I won’t try to do anything to change that, but I’m sure we all know that the bunk is all your own.
Drinking early today?
“Breathe on the mirror. Please.”
Romney has running as if the Republican nomination is his to lose. That’s how he he managed to blow it 2008, when after being the early favorite, he bored people to death by being too cagey.
When the other candidates are taken out of the equation, Santorum leads Romney 47% to 40% in a two-man race in Michigan.
*************************************
With each successive primary, it becomes more clearly a two man race between Santorum and Romney, with the distinct advantage to Santorum. The first hint of this was the Missouri primary where Newt was not on the ballot.
Willard got squashed 55-25.
Now even though Newt remains on the ballot in Michigan and Arizona, he is basically irrelevant because people do not want to waste their vote. After Michigan and Arizona, as a practical matter, it will be as if Newt is not on the ballot. Those of us who do not want Romney will coalesce around Santorum. Even Newt alluded to this early in the primary season.
In spite of some of the shots Santorum is taking, he is just as conservative as Gingrich (and on some issues such as the individual mandate, he is more so).
He is more electable than Newt because of his strength in the midwest swing states and his appeal to ethnic Catholics there and his much lower negatives.
AND MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL....SANTORUM IS THE ONLY THING STANDING BETWEEN US AND A ROMNEY NOMINATION.
If it was Newt standing in the breach against Willard, I would be cheering him on as well. But it is Santorum and I am A-OK with that. GO Rick!!

Nice try at evading the truth of your deliberate deception, however, by personally insulting me.
Didn't work however, because I'm telling the truth, and you're not, but it was remarkable for you to have the chutzpah to try such a blatant disregard for all things right and true.
FACT - Ari Fleisher did NOT come out in support of Santorum. FACT - I am not now, nor have I ever been "GOP establishment."
You lose, "boy."
Glad somebody said this...
