Greek Culture Minister Pavlos Geroulanos resigned on Friday after masked armed robbers stole more than 60 objects of "incalculable" value, including a gold ring, from a museum in ancient Olympia.

Sixty-eight objects were whisked from a museum dedicated to the ancient Olympic Games after two masked men immobilised the museum's sole female guard as she arrived for her early morning shift, officials said.

It may take centuries to get this stuff back. I just don’t understand the thinking of someone who steals items of historical value - In this case, things that may be over a 1000 years old (I know, hundreds, but still) so they can... what, exactly ?

Living beyond your financial means has a very heavy cost.

If the Greeks--and everyone else--do not awaken to reality and start living within their means, there are going to be many more losses of even more "incalculable" value.

Greeks, Americans, Europeans, and everyone else who is doing this are in for a horrifying shock when reality comes crashing down on them!

They're going to lose a helluvalot more than a few trinkets of "incalculable" value!

Boo Hoo!

A ministry unionist said museums nationwide were over 1,500 guards short of a full complement after over two years of layoffs imposed by the government in the entire public sector to address the country's worst debt crisis in decades.

The Germans should offer to write off the Greek debt in return for that Praxiteles in Olympia and the bronze statues of Poseidon and Paris in the National Museum.

No. On second thought--make 'em throw in the entire contents of the National Museum.

(They can keep the nasty Hellenistic pornography.)

Did the robbers speak German? Maybe they were just collecting collateral.

I just don’t understand the thinking of someone who steals items of historical value

Two reasons, I suppose.

One is to hold the items for ransom. The thieves had better ask for a ransom in dollars, not in euros or drachmas.

Second, there are wealthy collectors that would love to have such items for their own personal collections. Not to display of course, but just to possess.
