For many years high profile American comedians have infiltrated African TV sets with their bawdy brand of humour, yet for many years the continents slew of comedic arts could never catch a break in pursuit of the American dream.
Popular South African comedian, Trevor Noah, changed that this month by raising the stakes, not to mention many an eyebrow, with his appearance on the American late night show, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.
Noahs six minute slot was a hit with local supporters and African Diasporans globally. We certainly don t deny that Noahs stand up set had us standing up at the end of it, cheering him on as if we were part of the audience and giving him a standing ovation. However, it transpired that the humour that many of us loved was not a sentiment shared by many others, as evidenced by some comments from You Tube and Twitter users, as well as, those left on the The Tonight Show with Jay Lenos site.
One commenter accused Noah of being racist for his routine, which made fun of African-Americans speech and punctuation usuage. He also rubbed a few viewers and commenters the wrong way when he jokingly implied that the label of African-American was ironic as their connection to the motherland was non-existent, or tenuous at best.
We thought Trevors act was anything but racist and to quote him we are very very proud, but before we rush completely to his defence, we would like to know what YOU think?
Do black Americans have a right to be upset that his jokes about them in front of a mainly white audience were in fact racist and perpetuating a stereotype?
In case you are yet to watch his routine, click here.
Nope they have no right to be offended...comedy is always based on some truth...and funny is funny except for the thin skinned waiting to be offended group....
Did you watch his routine? he’s one funny guy. He goes after UNICEF infomercials in another routine . . .
In the words of Herman Cain, “America needs to get a sense of humor.”
Seriously. That was the funniest standup I’ve seen in a very long time. Naamean?
The Dark Crusaders will do to Trevor what they did to Chappelle.
Nawmean?
I never watch Leno, but black comics talk trash, f in this and f in that, cuss call women ho’s etc....they have no right to be offended
I have been trying to down load a picture of the 25 pound emerald that was found and gave up trying...same with link to Leno and the comedian....no luck :O(
bkmk
Doesn't he mean African-American Americans ?
You need to get rid of that pentium 3 and get a pentium 4 :)
Thanks for posting. That was funny.
The Truth Shall Set You Free...and make you laugh.
Will watch later but based on the little I read I know I will like it.
bfl
Funny, nah meen?
“and funny is funny except for the thin skinned waiting to be offended group....”
I think “that” group will be cheering Trevor on—they are too stupid to get it-—obama voters.
They do have a “right” to be offended, but they don’t have a right to demand that government / the network / advertisers make them feel all better.
Ha, he’s one of those EEEEvil racists who thinks those pseudo-African names “with too many consonants” are ridiculous.
