Santorum surges into the lead (National poll Santorum 38%, Romney 23%)
Public Policy Polling ^ | 02/11/2012 | Public Policy Polling

Riding a wave of momentum from his trio of victories on Tuesday Rick Santorum has opened up a wide lead in PPP's newest national poll. He's at 38% to 23% for Mitt Romney, 17% for Newt Gingrich, and 13% for Ron Paul.

Part of the reason for Santorum's surge is his own high level of popularity. 64% of voters see him favorably to only 22% with a negative one. But the other, and maybe more important, reason is that Republicans are significantly souring on both Romney and Gingrich. Romney's favorability is barely above water at 44/43, representing a 23 point net decline from our December national poll when he was +24 (55/31). Gingrich has fallen even further. A 44% plurality of GOP voters now hold a negative opinion of him to only 42% with a positive one. That's a 34 point drop from 2 months ago when he was at +32 (60/28).

A couple of other polls have confirmed the surge of Santorum, and the fall of Romney.

It’s time for Newt to pull out, he’s just there to help Romney win.

(LOL, I’ve said that about all the others, might as well say it about Newt now)

Yes, it’s important to note that Gallup runs a five-day trailing poll. So yesterday’s poll, taken the five days before, which showed Romney still on top, is misleading. Because the poll had been fairly stable, you can infer roughly what the past two days’ data was, which suggests tahht Santorum has caught Romney.

Santorum may have enough juice to win Michigan AND Arizona - Michigan has to be #1, though, to embarass Mitt on his own turf.

I am a strong Newt supporter, but.... I need to be consistent.

When Newt was way ahead I urged Santorum to drop out... now I must do that same to Newt.

Out first priority must be to stop Romney, and to do that I now urge Newt to drop out so we can unite this party against Romney. It’s a shame that Mitt was able to demonize Newt so easily :(

At some point you have to wake up and smell the coffee. For those of us who will never support Romney as a nominee, this is great news.

This would be funny - Newt and Mitt so taken with their hatred for each other that they thought they could ignore Santorum - except that once vetted, Santorum will prove to be a shamefully weak candidate.

We are in trouble.

[when Romney uses his superior resources to pulverize him, we could see this lead evaporate just as quickly as it was built up]

Have voters not figured the lying snake Romney out yet? Romney is going to live whoever wins, Newt or Santorm, limping into the general.

My main goal is to stop Romney, and Santorum appears to be the only one that can do that.

I'm not ready to say that Newt should drop out.

But when my primary comes round, I will definitely vote for whomever has the better chance of beating Romney.

I still have a hope that might be Newt, but that hope is thinning.

You are right, we are in trouble. For the life of me, I just can't get excited about Santorum, and people I've talked to feel the same way. He is a good conservative, but so is my Dad - and I can't see him as the president either.

This is not going to end well.

I agree with weak, only because he’s an inexperienced fighter of evil. Romney will compromise with this evil, Santorum will be defeated by this evil and the only one left is Newt who fought this evil, knows where it comes from amd knows how to send it back where it came from.

the best we Newt supporters could hope for now is a Santorum/Newt ticket. I think that would add some gravatas to Santorum

Newt should stay in for now, but Santorum and he should work together to take Romney out.

Santorum’s defeat of Romney’s severe inevitability is just great...for now. But Santorum doesn’t have the style to carry it through to victory in November. We need a real powerhouse to win. We need a brokered convention to nominate a real winner (and it’s not Jeb Bush.)
