Southern Nuclear was given the COL (combined construction and operating license) for Vogtle-3 and -4 in Georgia, using the Westinghouse AP1000 design.

This was the last hoop to jump through. The plants will be on-line in 2016 and 2017.

We're building nuclear plants again!

Jaw just dropped on the floor.

Okay, legislators. Let’s see if you can fricken do it again!

Approve a new crude oil refinery or two and then some coal-powered power plants!

Transparent political move by Bam to offset energy related re-election criticism for disapproving the pipeline. Pathetic, weakling, panty-waist slight-of-hand!!!

Before anyone starts saying that the free market supports nuclear power.
The plants are being built with the help of a conditional $8.3 billion loan guarantee from the Department of Energy. The loan guarantee is part of DOE's broader loan program that has been criticized for backing companies like Solyndra, the bankrupt maker of solar panels.

The Southern spokesman said the loan guarantee, combined with other regulatory measures, enable the project to receive cheaper financing that will ultimately save ratepayers $1 billion.

Would I be cynical in assuming that the hoops you have to jump through to get final bureaucratic approval (forms in triplicate, redundant hearings, manually processed forms - with carbon paper!, sitting in inboxes for months on end) would make the whole thing absolutely impracticable?

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission approved licenses to build two new nuclear reactors Thursday

We're building nuclear plants again!

And we're buildin' 'em Thursday!

Pinch me!

Who’da thunk we’d ever build another plant anywhere after China Syndrome , Chernobyl and Fukushima?

a thousand carbon credit traders just had goosebumps and cold shivers.

Don’t get your hopes up. You are unlikely to see even a single KW produced by these 2 plants. There are so many obstacles before the reactor can actually produce power. Case in point..Long Island Lighting had completely finished building a nuclear power plant. But it never produced any power. Reason? The local authorities nixed it because they claimed there was danger of people evacuation problem in case of a nuclear accident.

Keep in mind no one has been killed in US, Europe, India and other democratic countries due to faulty reactor design. Tsunami’s & massive earthquakes do not happen in most places.

Hooray!!!!!!!!

Does this include getting past all the lawsuits from the communist anti-Americans?

There is no legitimate reason that we can’t build 10 nuclear power plants a year for the next 3 or 4 years. The left uses “environmental concerns” to attack our nation and make us weak.

I see a lot of posts here about “scams”, “lawsuits”, etc. Please let me reply:

The nuclear industry hasn’t been sitting on its hands for the past 30 years. They’ve worked with the NRC to institute an alternate approval process.

Both the nuclear industry and the NRC saw that the old approval process was ripe for abuses - one that allowed anyone with an agenda to slow the project to a halt. Neither the industry or the regulator benefited from these delays.

The new process still allows challenges to a new license. But such challenges have their specific time in the schedule. Those times have passed for Vogtle-3 and4 .

All of the site and design challenges happened prior to Obama’s influence.

This is it. They WILL be built, and they WILL operate.

“The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission approved licenses to build two new nuclear reactors Thursday”

It must be an election year...with a bit of concern on the part of this incumbent.

First new nuclear reactors OK'd in over 30 years

Read my virtual lips: THEY WILL NEVER BE BUILT.

Either the eco-commies will shut it down, or Obama himself will, or the economy will crash to the point where no power plants will be built.

This country is DONE as a leading nation in the world. Our destruction is ahead, and there are no brakes left.

Propaganda, Spin and B.S. Just so Obama can claim he is not totally anti-energy.

Since Yucca Mountain is still closed, where are we putting the spent fuel?

These will never be built.
